CPU PLL VCore default at 1.8v, Why?

Is there a reason why CPU PLL VCore is turned up so high by default? Its at 1.8v on E758. Its the highest default voltage in BIOS, second only to a few at 1.5v.

Turning CPU PLL VCore down to 1.65v has taken down an OC wall I was hitting when VCore, VTT and QPI PLL changes did nothing to improve stability.

I'm still testing with LinX but this voltage being so high at default seems to be a major roadblock for overclocking, and it results in very hard to diagnose behavior like hard locks and reboots without BSODs. The only BSOD code I got regularly with it was 9C.

Do we know why EVGA decided to have this voltage so high at default? Do other boards have it this high at default? Can anyone explain why this voltage would hold back an OC when the major voltages(VCore/VTT) can apparently handle the OC fine once CPU PLL VCore is lowered?

Do you need to run your IOH VCore that high? I have mine at 1.2 without issue, its default is 1.1. I may even lower it when I get down to fine tuning voltages, so far I'm still looking for max stable OC.

Do you mean QPI PLL VCore? Mine is at 1.2v.

Didn't see any board listed in your signature so I figured you were running a E758 like its mentioned in the first post.

Good to know you're running your CPU PLL VCore at 1.35v without any problems on E760. Whats your current OC? Can you post a template?
Did you find any problems with CPU PLL VCore at the default 1.8v?

I love you rusty725!   This is HUGE.    I had no idea they had the CPU and IOH PLL so jacked up.   I set it to 1.35 for both on my 760 and it SERIOUSLY gives you a ton of more headroom for the CPU voltages!   This (or the thread you linked) needs to be plastered all over so the 760 people can see that.

Oh one side note.   In your template CPU VTT set to auto.  This was bumping my VTT way too high, I set it manually and I can keep it fairly low.

Mine was at 1.8 witch seems to be the defalt for all boards.

I brought it down to 1.6. I will have to see how far i can bring it down again.. i think around 1.4 or 1.5 i get a 000000124 BSOD.

"How low can you go?" comes to mind :P

well I use 1.62v dram and auto vtt sets it 1.25v and goes 1.27v on load. I guess you can set it to manual like 75 or 100.

p.s. I checked my volts with a cheap multimeter and dram that set at 1.62v shows in reality 1.64v every other volt is a bit low or very close to accurate.

your lucky youve got a multimeter :) its gonna be on my next shopping list as my memory is set to 1.65v in bios which it needs to run properly but sadly in windows using what i got which is software cpuid hardware monitor and eleet show memory as 1.72v

never comes down from that if its close to a real reading that is.

I bumped mine down to 1.35 and I notice my OC became more stable afterwards.  ELEET doesn't even recognize the values when they are that low.  That was on my first Classified that died.  My new one requires 1.45.

    +1
i too have set my cpu pll and ioh pll to 1.35 and it feels like a new computer...

whilst i realise i am a bit late coming to the party on this one, this really should be made a sticky or something so people can easily find it and read so they aware
(but then again why are both values set so high to start with??)

Thank you so much for this. I have been having trouble getting my pc stable for a long long time now. This was the fix I needed. Not sure why it's default so high, or why this isn't a sticky, but thanks a million!

What do these voltages control exactly?
ive run one of them at 1.65 an I set notice any difference..
If set to default/auto does it go down/up?
