Hi guys.
When I was playing Half-life alyx recently, I always encountered a black screen problem after about 20-40 minutes of playing. Fans suddenly go to 100% and both my VR and monitor go dark.But the wired thing is that the system is still running, I can still hear my friends talking in Teamspeak.
I set +110Mhz core, +500Mhz Mem, +0% voltage, max power and temp limit. 450W and 500W BIOS both tried. Default fan curve.
My PSU is RM850i and I know it is not too high for 3090. The corsairLink shows max 600W consumption when running Timespy so I guess it might be OK.
I guess it might be some kind of driver crash or boost frenquency is too high, but I think the card can handle +110Mhz since it is FTW3 Ultra.
Anyone has similar problem or any advice and comments?

Does the issue occur at stock clocks on the gpu? Usually this points to a psu issue, but it could also be a gpu issue.

If is just reboot directly, it is definitely a psu issue. Yes, I will try to lower my clocks and see if the issue happens. Personally I guess it is because games like HF-Alyx can not make 3090 runs at 99% load(70-80% usually), then the clock boost higher than 99% load and cause a driver crash. I can get 2070mhz boost some time if load is below 70%. But that can not explain why I played CSGO everyday recently but don't meet this issue. CSGO is also a game that can't make 3090 99% load. In addition, it is a little disappointing if it is really gpu issue that can't afford +110mhz clock. It is supposed to be very easy for most FTW3 Ultra.

I've had an unstable OC on my 3090 FTW3 Ultra reboot my PC - and I'm running an EVGA 1600T2 which is a 1600 watt PSU. Hell, I've had my PC restart under absolutely zero load by setting a VRAM OC that was too high when at the desktop.

Check your hard disk setting in power plan. If the hard disk powers down it can cause the VR to black screen. Steam uses the high performance plan for VR.

This is a GPU issue. RMA it.
Video signal cuts and background process continues is = gpu dead.
I experienced this with my dead 1080 ti strix, sent to Asus and they told its gone. I am sorry but your psu is fine

Decrease to +70mhz core, +500mhz mem. No crash in HL-alyx, but crashed in RDR2(just game crash, system and gpu driver is OK)
Then I think it is not core frequency issue. It might because of default fan curve is too silent, which leads to 75-76C temp when 99% load.
Then I changed fan curve to 69C in 99% load. +110mhz core and +500mhz mem, runs multiple times RDR2 benchmark and TS stresstest. No error for now. Will keep looking.

My brand new 3090 just black screened on both monitors.. I'm at stock clocks. My Supernova 850 T2 PSU is a year old. GPU temps in the mid-50ºC.

Happened again. HL-alyx driver crash but system running. I am sure it is below 70C and about 70% load. I will RMA it.

This is anecdotal, but I was having similar issues with Precision X1 installed...when I removed X1 ..it stopped doing it...
I'm not saying X1 is the issue, but for whatever reason I haven't seen this issue since I removed it.
This is using the just released driver.

Thanks, I will try this right now. I don't quite remember afterbuner of x1 I was using at the beginning of the issue. But just now I was using X1 and this issue happened

Yeah...I'm not a fan of not having fan control, but so far the card hasn't had any temp issues even on the factory curve.

Have you tried running it at stock speeds yet? All I've seen you post is that you reduced your offsets but nothing about returning all sliders to default. Poor overclocking headroom isn't a valid RMA reason.

I have the same gpu and the same alyx problems. It's only happened twice in alyx. First time I reseated the gpu and everything was fine for a few weeks. Then a few days ago it happened again and I force shutdown immediately. Then rebooted a minute later, and didn't have any issues the rest of the night. It's very hit or miss, but I haven't had the gpu black screen/fans hit 100% in any context other than alyx. I don't have the Evga software installed.

I have this issue as well where I am on a zoom meeting... not even gaming and both my screens go black for a while and the audio changes to my monitor speaker. Anything I had open with a browser has artifacts and I have to close chrome.. not sure what is going on.

Yep. But so goes the early adoption growing pains! If this fixes it, it's likely a driver issue and will eventually be fixed with a new driver. I just, hopefully, gave you work arounds until then.

Is there a fix for this yet? I am having this exact same problem...Playing overwatch and all of a sudden both my monitors will go black but I can still hear the game playing in the audio. I have to hold down the power button and hard shut my computer down in order to restart and get video on my monitors again. Seems to run fine when just browsing...

(image never comes back, card is off until power reset) This typically indicates that the card's VRM have turned off due to a protection mode kicking in. If it is a Rev 0.1 card, I would recommend contacting EVGA about getting it replaced via warranty RMA, and specifically request a Rev 1.0 (or higher, if it exists) graphics card. The VRM controller on the Rev 0.1 card is problematic. EVGA released the Rev 1.0 PCB to upgrade the VRM controller to attempt to resolve many recorded complaints.
