Not 100% sure the pump is the culprit, but was online playing with a low-demand graphics prog and noticed responsiveness was getting laggy. First thing I did was look at the CPU temp and sure enough it was in the high 90's on all 4 cores..previously I had never seen it above mid-50's, even playing BF1 on max settings. I immediately shut down and let it cool for a while, restarted and within 30 seconds it was up to the high 80's and climbing, and that's just from the desktop. The radiator fans were working so that narrows it down to the pump most likely, or a blockage in the water flow. I will try to open it up tomorrow night and run the pump with an external 12V power source, but wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or have any other suggestions what might have caused it. The CPU was not under heavy load at all, and was running at spec 4.2GHz (4.5GHz turbo). Purchased the CLC 280 only about 7 months ago...

Writing this from my laptop btw ;)

All specs in signature...

Pump still firmly attached to CPU ?

Have an extra MB header to test the pump ?

Some Asus MB have pump headers --- is this what your using Now ?

Check the BIOS settings -- anything change ?

Ok confirmed - pump dead as a door nail. Used an external 12V power supply I purchased ages ago for testing new parts, EVGA logo lighted up fine, but no noise, no vibration, nothing from the pump at all. RMA time sadly.

BIOS no change btw, nothing changed in setup for a few months at least, I use the motherboard AIO_PUMP header, checked all that yesterday.

Only problem is that I can't go for a week or two without the desktop while waiting for RMA, I have jobs to do sitting on the C drive. I've just ordered a new one from Amazon now which I'll have by Thursday (free 2 day shipping for Amazon Prime members) and then I'll have to sell the RMA one at a discount plus shipping etc.. I've never had a pump die on me before, and I've had some that ran for years. Despite this premature death, the CLC 280 has given the best cooling of all the AIO CPU coolers I've used - only custom loops have performed better for me.

New EVGA CLC 280 delivered this morning from Amazon, installed and booted up no worries. After 10 minutes on full load stress test, the highest temp on any of the 4 cores was 51°C. Nice. Failed pump RMA I sent back this morning. New one registered already. So easy to swap these things out compared to custom loops.

Ok I am not amused. Received the 'replacement' CLC280 (near 3 weeks later!!!), opened the box and saw there was thermal paste smeared around with no plastic cover over the heatsink, it was clearly a used CLC280 which I guess is to be expected on an RMA and would be ok if it worked, but I plugged it in using an extrernal 12V power source, and this one is broken too!!!! Same thing - EVGA logo lights up, but pump is completely dead. Did anyone bother to check this before sending it out? Just because the EVGA logo lights up does not mean the pump is working.

The box containing the CLC280 seemed intact, however the shipping box arrived pretty heavily slammed as per the following photo (taken BEFORE I opened the box) - there was not nearly enough packaging inside, the EVGA box was bouncing around inside there so it may have got damaged en route, but sheesh at least clean off the old thermal paste before throwing it in there!

Contacting EVGA for another RMA on this. Not impressed. - and I'll be using the same box to return it, with the same packaging. Kinda funny when EVGA sets very specific standards about packaging when returning items, but doesn't apply those same standards when sending items out.

    Bummer

Someone messed up by the sound of your experience

UPS & FedEx   ---> both seem to have a total indifference when it comes to package handling it might be smashed; but, we got it there

That is bad to receive a RMA replacement that has thermal paste all over it.

Wow Nereus !! That box shouldn't look like that if it had the proper amount of cushioning in there, which it def doesn't from the looks of it. Im sure EVGA will take care of ya but it still sux that you gotta keep dealing with this. Evga, what is goin on in that warehouse?!?!?

You are kind of making me worry a little bit. Just got the CLC280 for my new I7 7700K build. Odds are EVGA will get to the bottom of the problem. With how beat up the box is I would wonder if it was working when it left EVGA and then after a soccer game got to you.

Also keep in mind you can always deny a delivery when it shows up that beat up. Not really sure what that would do for an RMA though but that box is pretty trashed. I would be contacting the company that delivered it and let them know.

EVGA are doing an advanced RMA on it, even though I already purchased a full replacement from Amazon rather than wait on the RMA. Certainly the pump not working could be a result of the clearly bad treatment the box received in shipping, but the thermal paste smeared around is EVGA.

When the courier delivered the box he put it on the ground with the bashed in part facing away from me, handed me the machine to sign for delivery, and then took off into the elevator. Tricky. Despite how the shipping box looks, the EVGA box inside didn't appear damaged, but again, it certainly had been bouncing around inside there due to insufficient packing material.

lol... still waiting for delivery, but they are doing cross shipping this time. I told the guy it didn't matter so much as I've already purchased a new one from Amazon, but he said they'd send it cross shipped anyway since the first one was DOA.

Believe it or not I only just now have had time to open the box and test the replacement CLC280 (I have a super heavy schedule and can often go from 5:30am to 10:30pm or later without a break - unless you count standing for ages in an overcrowded NYC subway and/or bus a 'break').

So first up, the replacement works.

and secondly, well done EVGA for making good on the initial screw up and sending a brand new CLC280, and not just the pump and radiator, but an entirely new full CLC280 package.

My faith in EVGA has been restored, lol.

I'll be returning the crap one you sent me this weekend.

All's well that ends well. Thanks again.

Sorry to  hear there are issues on otherwise good product. I liked the silence, performance, looks.

My pump died about 3-4 months ago. As I have two Xeons, etc. etc, I did not bother checking with the RMA until now.
RMA mail says "EVGA is not responsible for any local customs charges. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the product to EVGA, including any import duties.". Well that would be 53,6€, just for postage. Add pkg, cushioning, time.

....and at this point I do not know for a fact if my other processor survived the overheat. I expect so, just not sure yet.

I've had another brand aio since 2012, still no probs. Preferring dependability, stable performance, so gotta go with the other one on this.

Still, I am very happy with all the other EVGA stuff (mobos, psus, gtxes), including their Folding at Home support.

The AIO from 2012 on this build is corsair h100.
Maybe worth mentioning my previous xeon machine (Evga sr-2 with 2x x5650 at 4+GHz), had been folding 247 from 2011 to 2017 with two corsair h70. Since 2017 it's been running as a gaming rig for my godson... Man, now thinking about it, what awesome products those AIOs were/are!

I already checked quite some reviews and ended up ordering Arctic liquid despite the success with corsair.. oh well..

Well there shudnt be a dif between evga and corsair actually evga's clc is better than h70, h100 since all of those AIOs are made by asetek and EVGAS got gen 4 pump i think and h70, h100 got gen 2 or 3... only those new corsair pro AIOs got gen5.

Same with arctis they use asetek too, so yeah i think u just been unlucky with ur CLC and its kinda hard to get around asetek since most brands use them.

My EVGA CLC 280 also failed (pump died), after 7 months (even less in real hour usage). 2018/11/08 10:08:05 (permalink)
    Yes, same thing happened here.

My computer crashed all of the sudden. Normally my PC does not crash (100% stable).
Anyways, rebooted and the whole PC became sluggish and I quickly noticed CPU was throttling down and temperatures spiking.

So I decided to uninstall everything, re-apply new paste (Grizzly obviously, no other crap on my hardware) and reseated everything.
After spending (= wasting) a few hours on this, I hooked up my PC to the outlet and booted into the Asrock bios and temperatures spiking 70, 75, 80 degrees Celsius in seconds.

Turned off the computer. Searched the internet and found this thread. After reading I ordered a new watercooling set through Amazon and created a support ticket with EVGA.
Hopefully they respond as soon as possible, so I can do an Advanced RMA on my EVGA CLC 280 and get a brand new one (not used, like the experience like the thread started had).
So I can sell the replacement again to someone else. Obviously I will always loose money on this, but Amazon is way, way faster in service than EVGA lately.

My EVGA CLC 280 was purchased in this year back in April (so 2018). It stopped working yesterday after not much daily use.
So in total it lasted less than 7 months. In computing terms it's even less. Really disappointed with this, because in general it was/is an okay product.

I have owned many AIO solutions (Corsair, NZXT and Fractal) and full WC sets (XPSC and EKWB), but this is the first time ever for me, during all these years, that a pump completely stopped doing anything. I am experiencing the exact same thing as the topic starter; lights coming on, but pump not working.

I am not experienced enough to dismantle everything, like the topic starter, nor will I do so (warranty obviously). But it's clearly the same issue.
So I ordered a new set through Amazon (delivered tomorrow luckily) and created a support ticket for this one. So hopefully it will be replaced asap with a brand new set and not an used set (with paste / TIM everywhere). Because if that happens, I will really lose all faith in EVGA.

On a sidenote; I also own a GTX 1080 Hybrid version. Hopefully that pump will last a bit longer than with my EVGA CLC 280!! ** crossing fingers **

Anyways; will keep you updated on how EVGA is going to treat me and my warranty, after the product failed after being in "use" for less than 7 months (purely measured on date and not by real hour usage ofcourse, which is way, way less).

    Cheers.

Additional note; just re-read the thread starter's post. His EVGA CLC 280 also died after 7 months! Now that cannot be a coincidence!

My 280 has been great. Used it for almost 1 year.

Just reminded me I need to sell the replacement one I have sitting in the closet still lol - I had to buy a new one rather than wait a couple of weeks for the replacement one from EVGA to arrive. The new one has been fine btw, about a year now with no issues.
