So I decided to re-paste my 980Ti today, as the temps were getting too high for my liking. Taking it apart, the TIM that EVGA used was quite dry. Repacing that with some Arctic MX-4 helped things. But now, my question. Reading up about re-pasting GPUs, the topic of thermal pads on the VRMs keep popping up. However, when I took mine apart, I noticed no such thing(s). There weren't any pads that I could see anywhere around it. Am I worrying about nothing?

Could you provide pictures of the vrm section and any cooling plate that was around it? Typically there is a heat spreader and thermal pads on the vrm section.

No, I didn't remove the second plate. Did I need to? I just got to that point and then cleaned off the old TIM with some ArctiClean.

    No, your fine

That is where said pad hide -- if you wanted to examine that the were: there, in place, correct size

    I like MX-4 TIM

No curing and does not dry-out

Alright, good. I wasn't too sure how much TIM to use (When it comes to CPUs I use the X method), so I put a good size pea and pushed the cooler onto it. Not sure if it was necessarily the "right" way to do it, and I probably used way too much, but it's working.

Short of install & remove to inspect , then do it again ---> no really good way to learn how much TIM to use

Too much is not that big of a deal if you use non- conductive & non-capacitive TIM, like MX-4

    Have fun

''I didn't remove the second plate. Did I need to?''

that's what they considered the ''cooling'' plate  ? maybe some pads under it  like as with the backplates ?

cant find a image  of one took off to view to see ??

well  here in this thread it shows it off and there are pads under it ??

Thanks. I haven't taken it off again yet to see if I used too much, but replacing the old, dry paste that EVGA put on has helped a bit, dropping load temps from 75-77C to 68-69C.
