4GB vram is fine for those on a single monitor

its only if you are running 3 monitor surround you will run into problems.

Turn down the AA then and it will be fine on a higher res screen, if running on 1080p set to 8x, if running in 1440p set to 4x, if running on 1600p set to 2x, etc etc.

Higher resolution does not need high AA, follow this method and it should stay under 4GB vram usage.

You can use zero aa in 4k and go over 4 gb vram.  Ultra 4k textures

I don't have a 4k monitor and have no plans on one for now. Thank god I am not going crazy over vram amount. 4GB works just fine for me.  :)

We're talking about the amount of RAM in the graphics card, available to the GPU.

Too many pc users look at things "IN THE NOW" and they buy for RIGHT NOW.

Others look at longevity and want to get the most for the money they spend without having to upgrade every year and a half.

For me I fall in the latter category. I will be getting the 8gb probably two for SLI. I will be covered for quite a while. If I were to get two 970's Id regret it in 6 months.

For those that say games dont need 4gb ram

COD AW
Mordor
Skyrim with Mods
Evil Within
AC Unity
already have 4gb as recommended settings.

Witcher 3, GTA 5 probably will ask for more. This time next year 6gb will be the norm. Book this post.

Buying an 8gb card with a 256bus is not going to help you very much, its been proven time and time again by the time you see a real gain the GPUs dont have enough power to push it.

the memory bus is nearly irrelevant if wanting to run higher res textures. higher res textures require little to no more processing power but do require more vram.

by the time 8GB Vram goes mainstream your longetivity will be short lived and the video cards will be too slow, this is why most of us prefer to save money and just get the 4GB option instead now and upgrade around 1 - 2 years later.

also all the games you mentioned where vram would be an issue is only on a 3 monitor surround setups or those running on a single 4K monitor, which is still today a very small market percentage. most gamers are on single 1440p or 1080p screens

I still choose to be on 1080p for this reason so I have a good balance of performance and vram usage, while others on higher setups will just keep burning money and complaining of performance and lack of vram (gee I wonder why) some people have more money then they do common sense.

Uhmm.... Every year something new comes out. The next big thing. And then six months from that "next big thing" your 6gig video card is obsolete. Go figure

Wouldnt system ram come into play if it ran out of Vram, of course itll be slower but isnt that how it works.

have you really never ran out of vram in a game ever? hitching, stuttering, massive framerate drops and freezing is what happens. system ram will do nothing for you there.

If you like your games limited to a 30Hz refresh rate, go ahead and get a cheap 4K panel and a single GTX 980. If you want your FPS around 60, you will need to spend a lot more for a good display that uses display port to get you to that 60Hz refresh rate. You also need to run SLI to get near 60FPS on a 4K monitor... VRAM is the last thing you need to worry about at that point... the GPU's can barely keep up at that resolution.
http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_980_sli_review,23.html

Not to mention... the CPU power you need to back it up... That review uses a i7 3960X @ 4.6GHz to get those results.

I'm running 4 monitors in NVIDIA Surround at 7680x1440 + 1920x1080 with ONE 4GB card. This RAM hype is just that: a hype. There's no evidence for the claim, that we'll need more VRAM in the near future.

The truth is you'll never know what's coming. You can buy now the GTX980 or wait a few months for the 8GB variant... And a month later a GTX980Ti comes out and so on...
I guess if you're going to SLI a 8GB of VRAM would come in handy, for a single card 4GB seems quite reasonable. Of course 6GB would be more future-proof, however nVidia is not stupid to release a "perfect" card.

Yes, but when you go SLI with two 980's you actually are at 8GB. So I don't see a problem ^_^

Good to know that I won't need more VRAM with 4 monitors at my current res then. 4GB will be ok for the next 2 graphics card generations for me.

No its not, GTX 970s in SLI can bearly hit 40FPS on 4K with a i7 3690X @ 4.6GHz. You run out of GPU power WAYYYY before you run into VRAM issues.

too much technical broscience in this thread. Alot of unfounded opinions.

Show proof that 8gb is worthless?

If Bethesda comes out with fallout 4 next year with all the mods for that there is no way a 4gb will be able to handle it.
