Sprinx I think you are confused on how things work. Opening tabs in Chrome affects your system memory RAM, and affects VRAM virtually not at all. I just tested this myself. I opened almost every link in EVGA's web site (scavenger hunt style, you know what I mean). VRAM usage was at about 308 MB.
When I closed all tabs, it went back down to 272 MB, a quite negligible difference of 29 MB. However, system RAM was utilized by an additional 1.7 GB when the tabs were open. See attached pictures for evidence of this. It sounds like you have some software issues somewhere. Try using a different browser temporarily to see if this fixes your crashing.
I'm not confused, but thank you. I think you may have missed the part where I stated I am a heavy tab user. This type of VRAM use is to be expected. (Click to enlarge — this forum seems to like to scale images :/) ~700MB Chrome VRAM + Game that is VRAM exhaustive = Out of VRAM = VRAM dump.

dragon age inqisitions uses over 3 gig vram on 1050p res. Wonder how much it uses at 4k if anyone has ever tried it. and yes modern versions of Chrome, IE and firefox will use vram as they now use gpu acceleration by default. My old gtx 460 1 gig vram used to get saturated just from me using the windows desktop.

Cool story. Can't buy it anymore in Australia. Isn't available from any vendors over here. Can't even buy it from EVGA because I'm in Australia and they don't ship here (plus it's not in stock). I see though that they halved the price. It's also last gen. It's also not HDMI 2.0. But, hey, I tried to win it in the competition! ;)

Nope. + We pay 10% import tax on anything over 1000 dollars.

So I was looking for more info on this topic. This article cleared my doubts about VRAM on current EVGA 980 cards completely: http://www.pcgamesn.com/welcome-to-the-vram-apocalypse To make it easier to read in this thread, I'll quote the bullet points: It comes down to how the Xbox One and PS4 are architected, and how games built for it are being ported to the PC. The next generation of consoles aren’t that powerful. The AMD CPU and GPU combination that powers them both are basically cut-down versions of the Radeon 7870 card, a card you can buy for about $130. But there’s a difference. The consoles have a pool of RAM, 8 gigabytes, that can be shared by both the CPU and graphics card. PCs tend to have similar, or larger total memory, but that RAM cannot be pooled. Your VRAM and your system RAM are not additive. About what happens if the PC uses up all of the available VRAM but has still (usually huge amounts of) system RAM available: Your PC might have 8 gigabytes of system RAM, and 1GB of VRAM, but that isn’t accessible to a game’s renderer without some complicated, and slow, movement of data around the system. Moving data between the GPU and the system RAM is far slower than moving data between the VRAM and the GPU. So it will be slowed down by that. The reason however is not the bad PC-platform compared to consoles. What I, and a few friends suspect is going on, particularly with The Evil Within, is that the game has been developed primarily for the consoles, and the PC port is probably a bit of an afterthought It's game designers giving a damn about how the PC experience of their pretty console-crap is. This is usually the case for almost every AAA+ game in the last 10 years. There's also a reason for me to not bother waiting for cards with more than 4GB of VRAM at the moment: Now, this won’t be as much of a problem for games built for the PC first. It’s only going to show up when games are architected for the consoles, or more likely, the PS4, first. As I have completely blacklisted every single game company that tends to do bad console ports or DRM games for the PC (EA, Ubisoft, Activision etc), I will have no problem at all in the next years. Star Citizen for example is made for the PC and while my VRAM usage is at 4GB when playing it, it's not slowing down or crashing. To increase VRAM because of bad console ports mistaking PC VRAM for system RAM is not the way to go. The whole PC industry should ignore this and the game industry had to learn from their mistakes. But this will not happen of course. Be it as it may, I'm not affected. One ray of hope: It’s worth considering upgrading to Windows 8.1. In the latest version of Windows, DirectX was updated to allow for tiled resources: a bit of a hack that helps in texture streaming

Don't play games with other programs open. Close your browser while playing games. Duh! That must be item #1 on every gaming guide. ...unless you like wasting money on hardware to support your bad habits.

4gb vram is enough for 1080p gaming. 4gb is more then enough to cover everything the consoles do, and unlike the last generation we are unlikely to see special higher resolution textures for PC versions of games. Games are already ballooning to over 50gb. And I think most people will be fine with 1080p gaming (I use a 32 inch monitor, 1080p is plenty big, my main issue is with games not supporting new or ANY good AA modes). Those that are looking into multi monitor and 4k gaming should do so no with a budget, buy your 6 and 8 gb video cards.
