My 5 week old 3080Ti FTW ULTRA died on me this evening with all the fans in overdrive and a slight burning smell as I frantically tried pressing the power button to switch off the PC. Once I fired up the PC again the red LED light in the centre of the power connector block remained lit. I did all the troubleshooting, even moved the card to another PC but the parrot is dead. No mods, all stock with even my pet hate RGB lights off. I'm in the UK. Now I'm just waiting for the RMA to go ahead :(

Design flaw with the 3080ti perhaps? I've only seen this problem cropping up recently.

Well there hasn't been any indication of the 3080ti having the same issues as the original 3080/3090 FTW3. A lot of those have died like this, but this is the first time I've seen multiple 3080ti's reported as dead.

Thanks for the information. I didn't know the original FTW cards had issues. The reason I waited a while was for potential problems to be ironed out and jumped at the chance of owning a 3080ti.

Thanks talon. I used to be all over problems like this but kind of stepped back from the PC hardware scene a few years ago. I shall keep my eyes peeled in the future.

I hope EVGA are on the case over these failures. This is the first time in my life a card has failed on me so quickly. 17 years ago was the first time and the last time I had a card die before this happened. That was with only 2 years of use. (Old ATI card that wasn't up to the job)

Yeah first for me in quite awhile. Think I've purchased at least 15-20 Evga Graphics Cards and a couple of Motherboards since 2004. I had an Evga GTX 680 Classified that showed up from NEWEGG Canada dead on arrival, simply shipped back to Newegg, no big deal. So boxed up my card today and took it to the local FEDEX Shipping place here in my town, what a nightmare that was!!! They simply looked at the box with label and said "you have all the Shipping paperwork in order" uh what?! Came home and got frustrated as hell on the FEDEX web site trying to figure out Customs forms (Int shipping Canada to US) and Waybills etc etc... Wound up giving up and going with Canada Post instead. Dont recall such a nightmare in the past when using UPS to ship something south of the border!

All NVIDIA cards share a same potential issue. All NVIDIA cards regulate their average power draw. None of them regulate their instantaneous power draw. Instantaneous power draw is supposed to be regulated by the VRM themself, but research indicates that NVIDIA's reference design for this generation (as well as previous generations [unknown to me]) has the power limit set way too high so that VRM could be damaged before it shuts itself off. That being the case, this generation -- with lots of transistors and greater performance than ever -- can draw big instantaneous power spikes which can damage the VRM. This is an issue shared with this whole generation. Particularly with cards with reference VRM design pushed towards their upper limits (like the FTW3s). I wouldn't say that it is just an issue that can happen to 3090s. But, I would say is is most likely to occur with older 3090 FTW3s that are Rev 0.1 versions (due to their dummer analog power measuring and power control circuitry and more out of balance power output).

Never had an EVGA card or motherboard go belly up on me until this. I miss my old x79 board, rock solid and only recently sold my mint conditon EVGA 980ti FTW card. I hear you. Some postal services seem to have taken a back seat when dealing with customers. Barely any quality with staff these days, and poorly trained too. (Or just not giving a flying fig) I think I might be in for a nightmare of an RMA due to some members stating customs are forcing them to pay VAT when it's already been paid. And closing the UK RMA centre has made what should be a simple process appear a lot harder. Wish me luck :/

That sucks. I have the same card with no problems so far. But then again, I undervolted it from the start to keep the temps and noise down. What were you doing when it died? I'm asking because I'm not brave enough to try the "card killer" New World. :-P I know, it's not the game but the manufacturing fault that kills. I wish there was PSA with serial numbers of affected cards. Well, maybe there is, but I haven't looked for one.

I wish there was PSA with serial numbers of affected cards. Well, maybe there is, but I haven't looked for one. It does indeed. It was undervolted and the temperatures were in the mid 50's. I'm a part time hobbyist 3D modeller. At the time the card was rendering a lit wire frame scene, nothing heavy, something a GT710 could do with ease, and that's when it freaked out and partially died wth a slight burning smell. I don't game either. I can can understand failure if the card has been hammered but this isn't the case here. Saying that, as I said above, no other cards I've owned in the past 17 years have ever given up this fast. I've only owned Nvidia cards in those years, mainly EVGA and MSI. More EVGA. I agree with you about a possible manufacturing fault. I think in a rush to get these cards on the shelves things have been overlooked, perhaps, or faulty componnents. Only EVGA and the manufacturer are privvy to this information.

EVGA got back in touch, they've been very helpful. First of all they suggested I contact my retailer before raising an RMA. Me thinking the 30 days return was up isn't the case. My retailer issued a returns label and it'll be going back tomorrow, phew. EVGA pointed out the customs duty which I was dreading. At least my retailer accepting the return has given me peace of mind. Now the big question, which card do I go for next. Do I take the risk and get another FTW?

That's the exact type of load that keeps killing these cards. I mean a pretty low load, not 3d modeling in particular. It seems that a relatively low load is causing the cards to run with low power consumption at high boost with few restrictions, and then any sudden load increase causes a big power spike that it isn't ready to limit; since the NVIDIA power monitoring and limiting doesn't limit instantaneous power and instead limits average power.

I never knew that, thanks for the information. I did take a look at the earlier 3080 / 3090 problems and that's why I decided to skip buying early in a hope the problems were rectified. I didn't expect this 3080ti to take a tumble at all. Did other brands suffer the same problems?

My Card had been under water since I got it, only 3 days of testing on Air prior to installing Water Block. The Card OC'd very well with no need to increase Voltage. Gaming +120 - +135 / +675....depending upon title. Highest temps I ever saw was 46c gaming any AAA title w Card boosting to 2050 Mhz. Power draw while gaming around 420w. Kumbuster would get the Card to max power draw, as in 446w, but temp still would not go over 46c (I have a very large robust custom loop with *9 120mm radiators, one of them 480 56mm thick. We should not have to undervolt a GPU, if so, then its certainly a design flaw. The average consumer would have no idea how to "undervolt" a GPU. Anyhow, Card is shipped off to join the masses in Evga warehouse ;) Leak testing my system again as I re-installed the EK Block on my 1080Ti SC Black (glad I didnt sell it, although sold the other one I had). Also glad my Corsair AX1600i safety shut down kicked in and prevented the Evga GPU from taking out any of my other HW.

This is odd as prior to my Card completely crapping the bed, on a couple of occasions I did see something similar, as in a few pixelated looking small box shapes on my desktop (upper right corner), but they disappeared after a re-boot.

I will add my 3080ti died less than an hour of the box. Nothing like having to fork out another 120 bucks to ship out to Cali from Canada on a crib death card. 2nd card has been going strong since.

Samething happened to me, my 3080 XC3 is dead.
I played BF2042 then after a while I had a blackscreen. So I closed my PC.
Since I had my new z690 mobo and my i9 12900 sitting there, I decided to build my new PC. Then .... when powered up. BAM red light... no POST. I was like. ****, maybe my new MOBO is dead. So I rebuild my old system.... and same problem :( I doubt I broke something while changing my mobo and my CPU. I have a lot of experience in building new system. I change my component pretty much each year.
I tried to change my PSU cable, reseat my GPU, nothing... red light....

Red Light means Dead…unless you dont have PCI-E power plugs in firmly…..mine showed no signs of kacking while playing…it was after shutting down and then starting up the next day…..”pop n no display” during boot sequence prior to loading Windows.
Its left me not having much confidence in the Cards, not a temp issue as the damn think never saw more than 46c (under water), seems a power design flaw that Im sure the Electrical Engineers are fully aware of (as the failed Cards keep trickling in), obviously no easy fix other than RMA amd fingers crossed the next refurb lasts longer than 3 or 4 months.

You guys are scaring me. I just got my 3080 ti FTW3 about two weeks ago. So far no issues and it runs cool in my fractal torrent case. Fingers crossed I have a solid performer. Bummer for those of you having issues.

So I contacted my retailer. They offered a refund or repair that would take 28 days, I opted for the refund. I'm now a 3080ti widow but will keep looking around. I might go for the 3090 since many are in stock.
