Hey everyone,

I've been working to get a 3080, but I'm still rocking a 144hz 1080p panel. The rest of my hardware is as follows:
Ryzen 7 2700X
32gb DDR4-3000Mhz
ASUS ROG STRIX X470-F GAMING Motherboard

I'm potentially eyeing an upgrade to X570/B550 + Zen3 CPU, depending on whether the upgrade is worth it. However, I'm starting to think that when I do eventually get a 3080, it might be smarter to save up to upgrade my panel to 1440p/4k before I worry about my CPU/MoBo.

Thoughts?

1080P  -  all the review sites will show you  that a 3080 would be a waste at that resolution.

It takes a high end cpu & at least a 2K res , up to 4K  for the card to start producing results.
so @ 1440P with high refresh rates/ frames would be the starting point for the 3080 card

yeah 1080p is pretty much the standard.. I think even the new 360hz monitors are only in 1080p

1080p will be CPU bottlenecked because the GPU will be able to smash through the lower resolution. If you're trying for 144fps+, it wouldn't be a terrible choice, especially since games will just get harder and harder to run.

Overall, you can definitely do 1080p 144hz, but you should aim to buy a better monitor. Many say that 1440p is enough, but I have personally not experienced 4k or 1440p (unless using samsung galaxy phones counts, which it doesn't), so I don't know if 1440p truly is 'enough'. I'm waiting for a 4k hdr UW 144hz IPS display. There is the LG ultragear, but it isn't UW. The 3080 will have trouble at 4K, but it'll be okay with DLSS.

What if I said that one's entire life had been decided by fate? That every single one of your actions, from the minute to the monumental, stemmed not from your own choices, but had already been decided upon? That life being a journey of limitless possibilities was but an illusion, and no matter how fiercely man struggled, he stood at the mercy of a long-established path? The wealthy shall know their riches. The needy shall starve on the streets. The wicked shall be wicked, the righteous just. The beautiful, the hideous, the strong, the frail, the fortunate, the miserable... and finally, the victors and the defeated. What if I said that all such things had been carved into stone eons ago, allowing for no divergence? If so, sinners have nothing to answer for, nor do saints have any true virtue to their name. What if I said that not a single action is carried out of one's own volition, but had been decided long ago? That we are merely adrift in the current of time? Tell me, would yo

1080p at 144hz is okay. Still overkill, but at 144hz you can at least put some of the performance to good use.

A 3080 will definitely let you run 1080p at 144 Hz reliably, but a 3070 probably will be able to do that. I'd say either save your money and wait for the 3070 review or save up and buy a higher res monitor. The 3080 looks really nice for reliably getting 1440p at 144 Hz.

Yeah unfortunately the 3080 is serious overkill for 1080P. Even at 1440p the 3080 is only 1-2 FPS behind the 3090 on many games. Obviously as time goes it should change but I would recommend looking at a 1440p Monitor

Upgrading to a 1440p monitor will be the best thing you ever do!

Devils advocate here - In 5 years you'll still be playing games maxed out on 1080p... :D
