i just installed my 3080 TI and i ran heaven benchmarks at 1440p max settings it was hitting 79-80C is that bad?

Not bad, just higher than average. No issue whatsoever, but it isn't the card that's the problem it's probably your case and airflow. These cards don't dump heat out of the back of the case like your last card probably did. Welcome to 2021. Time to upgrade your cooling and airflow.

I also have pretty high temps. I set my two front intake Scythe Kaze Flex 1800RPM fans to full speed (in case you never heard of these fans they push crazy air at max RPM and are well reviewed) and I sety a constant 80% fan speed on my FTW3 80 Ti which is as high as I would ever want it in a normal scenario. My case is a fractal Meshify 2 which is generally considered a good air flow case especially if you upgrade the fans, which I did. I also have two exhaust fans in the back which are just the stock 1000rpm fractal fans but that should be perfectly fine for exhaust purposes.

Genuinely curious what I'm apparently doing wrong with air flow in my case. Techpowerup also had this GPU hitting around 80c as stock settings so it doesn't seem to just be a me problem. Though too be fair before settings my case fans to a constant 100% and the GPU 80% it actually hit 86c. Which is pretty damn hot even if I did have very bad airflow, (I really don't). It really feels like a problem on EVGA's end, while technically they're charging less than most other AIB's for this card right now, under normal circumstances this would be priced similarly to a Strixx. So It's a bit disappointing how it performs thermally.

At this point I'm going to be forced to undervolt the card and run the fans higher than I would like due to noise concerns.

Did you try the OC bios position? It has a more aggressive fan curve. Might keep temps down without needing to set a fixed speed or a custom curve.

I haven't but as I said I set the fans to a constant 80% for a 3dmark + I set my case fans to 100% speed which in my mobo's custom fan curve I have maxed around 75% because they're loud as hell above that. So I set the fan speeds higher than I would I normally want them and it still hit 80c in a short 3dmark benchmark. There's not exactly much thermal headroom. I think my only play here is to undervolt. If you look at the TPU review, the out of box clock speeds are almost identical to the Founder's Edition and yet it's consuming way more power. That must be why it runs so hot even though this cooler should perform a good bit better than the FE. It seems like it just pulls way more power than it needs to at stock speeds for effectively no increase in performance.

Adding power doesn't help much and if you start approaching 80C, gpu boost really starts to pull the VF curve down. So adding more power gets you almost nothing at those temps. I'm surprised this card runs this hot. Seems like the 3090 FTW3 does better but maybe I haven't paid that much attention.

I agree, I edited my last posts with screenshots from the TPU review. The second picture is obviously the FTW3 where as the third is the FE.

Yea I used to see that with my Zotac 3090 before I water cooled it. It would drop like a rock at high temps. Some adjustment of the fan curves might help. Although I'm hitting 70C at 100% fan during a PR run, so it's never going to stay very cool.

Even then, my 3090 only goes from 145xx to 153xx in PR going from a 390w bios to the 1000w KP XOC. Never tops 50C during a run even pulling well over 500w.

I haven't spent time optimizing it but I just did a quick undervolt to 1905mhz at .925mV and my graphics score in 3dmark went up 400 points and average temp went down 7c. Not sure if the undervolt is 100% stable yet, but clearly the GPU isn't running optimally out of the box.

Probably stable. Different card, but my 3090 would always do 1920 at 900mv stable on air. Doubt this card will be much less.

it seems like in the bif to get better performance, they allow the cards to remain hotter. I am actually going to eat the performance loss and keep my gpu temp cap at like 75c.

My 3080TI FTW3 even at stock is running 86c under load.  Even when I undervolt the temps remain roughly the same. I have a Phanteks Evolv X case with plenty of fans and air flow so that can't be the issue.  I'm coming from a 3080 FTW3 Hybrid and that was always in the 60s under load.  I'm wondering if this TI I got just has a bad thermal paste application.  Performance on the card is great though but I'm not liking how hot its getting.  It's even creeped to 91c at times.

Which sensor is getting that hot? Not sure if you're using software that only reports GPU sensor or the max to be safe. You've got iCX sensors, so you should primarily rely on software that's aware of all of them. For context, this post will assume those temperatures are an average from all of your GPU's sensors (not VRAM or VRM related).

High quality dies with tight traces tend to require less voltage to operate at a given frequency, and they ultimately produce less heat because less energy is consumed. It's great to have a golden sample, but it's not common. Sometimes you get a lemon, which needs more voltage and gets hotter (which actually leads to more electrical leakage, requiring a tad more energy). EVGA tends to test GPUs to bin them so the better ones are used in their premium models like FTW3, however with FTW3 KINGPIN cards seemingly more available than the super rare 10 series version, they may be using the top chips in those exclusively. Could have loosened the criteria for FTW3-class GPUs due to the silicon shortage, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that you just have a naturally hot card. Buuut that would be tricky to diagnose without first attempting to fix issues with thermal compound/pads and mounting pressure. Check my earlier post that details lowering the stress on the GPU just in case you have a bum card. Since graphics cards are produced for profit and to live through their warranty, the thermal solution often uses cost-optimized materials with high shelf life at the expense of thermal conductivity. So it's reasonable to at least repaste the GPU if you need lower temperatures. It's just a bit of a pain and stressful if you don't regularly disassemble & reassemble hardware. You'll want to choose high quality paste & pads, so read some guides & reviews before ordering anything. Gamers Nexus and JayzTwoCents have several videos on the topic that are worth a peak, too.

In the meantime, test your temps again in the same way as before but with as many case panels removed as possible. Also be sure your PC is not up against a wall or desk or sofa. You want to give it as much ambient air as you can as if it's on a test bench. You may see a slight drop in temps because cases are rarely optimized to meet or exceed an open air bench. If you see a significant drop, good news - you may have a pocket of stagnant air. Case design, internal hardware arrangement, and case fans all have a hand in determining airflow characteristics. Under the right conditions, you can have good intake and exhaust but still have a portion where no air is moving. In fact, this is almost always happening in the extreme corners or edges of a case. Although it's benign in many instances, it becomes a problem when the area is large enough to encroach on hot components like VRMs, GPU/CPU coolers, and RAID/HBA cards. Consider how the FTW3 cooler operates. Unlike how a blower card exhausts all (or part) of its heat outside the case, these AiB cards just shoot air up & down, which means half is hitting your motherboard, curving out a bit from hitting the next PCIe slot, and likely going back to the graphics card as the fans don't care where the air comes from - they're dumb and they suck (literally & figuratively). The story for the air blown up (into the side panel) isn't much better, but this can be easily dealt with by taking off the panel at the expense of losing sound isolation and control of case pressure & flow patterns. A long term solution is to methodically change your case fan positions/directions/speeds until you see better thermal performance. Removing a few PCIe slot covers underneath the graphics card can help if you have moderate amount of positive or negative case pressure; you should feel cool air being pulled in or warm air getting pushed out. Neutral case pressure won't move air near the slots.

So is it a misidentified sensor, the die's ASIC quality, poor thermal compound, questionable mounting pressure, or a pocket of hot air hanging out by the graphics card? No idea which it is, but it has to be one of them. Pull back on the graphics load and undervolt for now if you can. 91°C is really high. It's not going to melt, but heat kills over time, and it will only get worse with age as fan bearings wear down and dust collects. Plus, GPU boost will lower the clockspeed as heat increases. I would aim for a high of 80°, maximum.

Yea I do, my CPU AIO is in front and then I had the 3080 AIO up top but now I just put Noctua fans up top for exhaust.

Yeah you don't actually have good air flow.  CPU AIO radiators are pretty restrictive to air flow and obviously warm up the air.  You need to move the AIO to top exhaust and put strong high pressure fans front intake running at a good high speed, since the front of your PC is so restrictive to airflow.  If you're going to keep a 400 watt card cool, air has to be dumping out the back of the PC.  Bottom intake fans would help too but it looks like your case doesn't have that.

Might want to install Precision X1 and adjust you fan curve to be more aggressive. When I game I have them at 80 percent and my core stays around 55 -65c. I use head gear so I dont hear them at all.

this ^^^

that's the first thing i did when i installed the fan because i noticed with the default fan curves it was sitting a little bit too high for my liking even on idle

Re: 3080 TI FTW 3 concerning temps 2021/06/12 09:58:05 (permalink)
I'm thinking I might just return mine. I'm really having a tough time here and I think I just got really bad silicon which sucks considering the FTW3 is a more premium model. I know it's not exactly a Kingpin but I still excepted better silicon at this price range. I just straight up can't run it at stock settings as it produces way too much heat in my already hot room here in Florida. And I can't get reasonably stable speeds undervolted either. Even .925 at 1890mhz is slighty unstable in longer testing, you should honestly be able to hit that number on this GPU.

If I run this GPU at stock settings it hits 86c, my 3080 FE hit 80c at stock settings. I know this card is drawing over 100 more watts at stock to stock settings between the two but I thought the superior FTW3 cooler would be able to at least match temps with the higher power draw. It really seems like Asus is the only company that was able to produce a good air cooler for these 3000 series cards. I don't know what magic they're pulling with their heatsinks/PCB design but clearly they're just clowning on every other GPU manufacturer in the cooling department. And considering how relevant cooling is to actual clock speeds due to how GPU boost works, that also gets them the best performance on their air cooled cards compared to the competition.

Also, I heard before that the fans EVGA uses produce a lot more of a whooshing noise at high speeds instead of a whiny noise which I would really prefer. So I'm kind of upset that it doesn't seem to be the case, these fans start getting super whiny at 70% fan speed and higher. It's really a shame because I've always respected EVGA a lot due to the way they treat their customers and still do even though I've never owned one of their GPU's before. I've had my 850W G2 for over 5 years now and it has served me well, and the queue system is the only reason I was able to get this 3080 Ti. But man, this really feels like a subpar product that I spent over 1k on. Though too be fair a lot of that has to do with Nvidia pricing it at $1200 instead of $1000, which isn't EVGA's fault.

EDIT: So I looked up the Techpowerup review of the EVGA FTW3 3090 and something is really wrong with the 80 Ti. It seems maybe the issues is on the 3080 Ti GPU itself and not just on the FTW3 cooler and how much power EVGA is pushing through it. I'm attaching two pictures, the FTW 3090 is massively cooler/quiter even though they have very similar power draws and are using the same exact sized cooler (in the 3080ti picture the leftmost temps is the GPU temp where as the other two are memory temp and hotspot temp which is not in the older 3090 review so ignore those). What exactly is going on with the 80 Ti's?

If you're running benchmark software and your hitting 80° on a card such as the 3080ti it's really of no concern.

corsair 350D
Asus Maximus VI Gene
4770k @ 4.2ghz
8gb rip jaws X series 1600 888/24
500gb crucial m4 ssd
1tb wd caviar black
Corsair AX760
Gtx 1080ti

I've been wondering about that too. I guess it's not the same HSF as the 3090?

BTW, you might get a little less annoying fan noise if you run the 3rd fan at a slightly different speed . That trick worked on my Zotac 3090 anyway. It keeps them from getting in to a harmonic.

I hit 86c playing Resident Evil 8.
