4K looks absolutely gorgeous, playing brand new AAA games in 4K are very immersive and visually stunning even if played at 60 FPS, which is the framrate that’s expected on these brand new cards. Older or esports games can obviously get higher frames then that.

If you care more about high refresh gaming go for 1440p 165hz+. If you care more about eye candies go 4k

3080 is the sweet spot for 1440p Ultra Wide........3090 a waste of $$$$ @ 1440p (unless into Benching / Benchmarks and just have to have the best no matter cost) ......AAA titles not SLi optimized on my 1080Ti (I'm running SLi), I have never seen more than 6G RAM in use.....

Definitely the first true 4k card on the market.. Completely overkill for 1440p unless you have a very high-refresh monitor.

4k tv with 120hz and VRR is the sweet spot. It would be perfect for this card. I have a 4k 60hz panel and the 3080 destroys every game I've thrown at it, except some badly optimized ones or cpu bound ones (like mfs2020).

They said in the reveal that the 3080 is for 4k and the 3070 is for 1440p.   It even says that on the website.

Well, they also said 3090 is for 8K gaming, which isn't true for most games, except if you reaaaally like Doom and want to pay 30k $ for an 8K TV.

For me, 1440p (or any other resolution, especially if lower easier to run resolutions) is paired with 120 / 144 FPS Gaming experience, not 30 nor 60 FPS, and in some games, the 3080 can't even give all that with all settings maxed, so the 3070 wouldn't be able to give me what I expect of 1440p gaming. I discovered 120Hz panel with Nvidia 3D Vision glasses (needed to deliver 60Hz to each eye) and since then I never bought anything under 120Hz panels. I don't need insane 200+Hz though, 120 / 144Hz is just the sweet spot for me.

Also, I am running a GTX 1080 FTW that can do 60FPS+ in 1440p most of the time (not always maxed though depending of the game) and the 3080 gives around 2 times (sometimes way over 2 times) more FPS depending on the games (with almost always ultra settings) which is the reason I'll go with this card despite being tagged as " 4K Gaming card " by Nvidia.

The truth of the marketing behind Nvidia's words is that lower resolutions scale worse in terms of generational leap performance, but it's still an evolution over the previous generation, and if someone wants to get 200+FPS, well, OK. If it's for 120FPS or even 60FPS then in this case it's clearly totally overkill since the card can already get 120 / 144 FPS in 1440p (twice the resolution as 1080p) in many games (not all though).

But ultimately, that's not Nvidia's choice to make but the customers to say what they want their experience to be.

So if 4k is needing roughly 6gb and say a game like msfs 2020 i have seen it use 7gb of vram would that make the 3080 max out its vram or is it
better to go with a 3090 if so?

Re: 1440p to 4k with GTX 3080 thoughts? 2020/09/27 11:10:39 (permalink)
First, Flight Simulator 2020 isn't a game, it's a simulator. That means it will consume more than any traditional games. That being said, sure you can use it as a game, but you can also use it as a professional tool to learn and perfect yourself. That's all to say that because it uses some Gb, doesn't mean all games will.

Also, games allocate memory the same way as system does. That doesn't mean this allocated memory is saturated, just that it keeps it to the program so if need be, it'll have it.

Now sure, you will find some games that can and will use (not just allocate) the 10Gb, but they are a minority. And that's also to blame on poor optimization in some cases. Unless you start experiencing really bad stuttering, crashes & such that you can pinpoint for sure to be video memory, not that many games would saturate 10Gb. There's also no reason to go 3090 if you just need more memory as there's likely to be a 3080 20Gb (at least it's rumored) and you'd be paying a premium fee for the 3090 that doesn't really give that much more performance if not for the 20Gb, considering it's almost twice the price.

a 3080 wont fit in there easily, i had that OMEN case and it was so close i didnt risk it. Pantek 600s cases are a nice stepup.

I have an ASUS 1440p 165Hz G Sync monitor, and I am going to move up to the LG CX 55" with G Sync to get 4k 120Hz. I will still keep my ASUS though as a my main monitor, and run the HDMI 2.1 cable to the TV when I want to game on it.

4k 60 should be commonly possible using all the tricks Nvidia has available. 1440P will remain the main choice for people looking for 120+ fps

1080 Ti to 3080 is a good upgrade.

1080 Ti to 2080 Ti was actually a good upgrade (used, $900, no tax, water block on hand) and the 3080 is another 10% faster at 1440p (20% at 4K) when running both cards at the same power draw (320w, all comparisons done comparing 320w 3080 to 260w 2080 Ti).

4k for me was wow at first.. then after time i had to upgrade my sons nvidia drivers and i tested a game and said.. wow! Is that 27" 1440 144hz g-sync screen smooth and fast and awesome!

So went out and bought up a 1440 ultra wide 120hz g-sync screen and never went back to 4k 60hz.

Many of us using that Dell Alienware Monitor...imo still the best desktop gaming monitor for the $$$ .....3080 will be sweet to team up with it...should be able to meet the 120 hz rate with frame rates in most titles...
