No such thing as overkill. If you’re happy with 1440p stay with it. If not, upgrade.

My kid has a 1440p monitor and he is running a 1070. It's starting to show it's age. So, he's gettin my 2080ti, which should last him years. I guess it depends on what you have now. Looks like you have a 1080ti? I would think at that res, you would see a rather substantial jump, but do you need it? That is up to you.

The 2080ti is advertised on Nvidia’s website as a 4K card and the 3070 has the same performance. A solid 1440 card would be a RTX 2070, Vega 64 or GTX1080.

3440x1440 on an EVGA 1080FTW is a bit of a struggle to keep 60fps in most AAA games these days without turning many things way down. Dont even get me started about Horizon Zero Dawn. I can hardly maintain 40fps in that one before crashing every 10 minutes. Both Assasins Creed Origins and Odyssey, I had to turn many settings off max and many to medium to just stay above 60fps. I feel like if I had a 1080ti I wouldn't be suffering as bad.

I went 4K with a 2080Ti and it worked out great. Granted I couldn't get a steady 120 FPS let alone 140 FPS on a 120/140hz screen but I've capped my screen to 98hz/FPS because of the screen and cable limitation on 10-bit HDR, etc for all the bells and whistles. With that said, a 3080 should be an improvement over the 2080 Ti and yes, I would go 4K if possible. A 3080 on 1440p should be overkill. I'd recommend a 3070 unless you're looking to hold on to the GPU for years to come with incoming demanding triple A game titles. This is all speculation on my end with the 3000 series since we haven't really seen real world benchmarks yet.

I also play 3440x1400p but had a 1080 Ti and most of my games played fine. I did get a 2080 FTW3 Ultra as an RMA upgrade and it has a bit more performance. Definitely plan on a 3080 if I can get one...

From your original question, it looks like you are asking about a monitor and not just the card.. If so, are you currently running a 16x9 or 21x9 monitor? I decided to go with a 21x9 to get the most field of view I could.. I might look into if there are extra wide higher resolution monitors like maybe a 5K but I haven't done that yet.. I do like my 3K version and I will stay with that..3440x1440. And, as was mentioned earlier, having more than enough power is much better than just meeting the basic requirements..

have a 1080 Ti and NO ISSUE at 1440p res with full eye candy! (check my sig) you if plan to go to higher resolutions like SOLID minimum 60fps+ in 4K then the 3080 is the right one for you. even a 3070 should be fine at that level! if you plan to go to 8k res then a 3090 is the gfx for you. i mean those 24GB Vram are there for something.. right?? and there may be a Ti version of the 3080.. who knows!? IF you plan to stay in 1440p then a 3080 will last you many years... in the meantime - the current announced 3000 gen cards will definitely give you a definitely SOLID amount of frames for 4K! SO IF you gonna bet on a 4K screen get a 4K HDR monitor! AND OBVIOUSLY make sure your CPU can handle the 3000GEN with no bottlenecks ( wait for benchies)

I bought my PG279Q the same day I did my 1080. They've paired nicely overall. Fantastic monitor and IPS with Gsync is to die for. But the 1080 FTW I have has always felt like it'd have been much better if I was playing games in 1080p. It's worked well overall, but certainly didn't feel like I was able to max everything in 1440p165. I'm currently playing on a 4K Samsung. 1080 def isn't enough for that. If you're gonna stay with the 279Q, I'd bet you'll end up loving the 3080. I'm replacing my JS9000 with a (most likely) X90H, so leaning towards that 3090 now.

I think Cyberpunk 2077 is absolutely going to be bone crushing max settings 4K. I don't see the 3080 being able to hold 60+ fps maybe the 3090 though. I want to play at max settings when Cyberpunk hits and I think 1440p will be that spot. I plan on keeping the 3080 as I will be getting the PS5 and Xbox Series X as well. We have a Sony 900F 85" in the living room so I play my consoles out there.

Why not do 4K? I been using 4K on 2080ti for a year and half and it runs great except for ray tracing. I bought an LG C9 55 tv last year and it has 4K 120hz hdmi 2.1 port. I also got a Acer 43 4K 120hz this year. The 2080 ti I got was the $1000 hard to get one and it’s usually 60 FPS so the 3080 should run great at 4K.

Yes, it should fit. Mostly likely without the bracket since it's taller and possibly a tad longer.

The only thing stopping me from upgrading from my 2080TI is the lack of 4k IPS, HDR, GSYNC monitors. I don't feel like spending $1500 on another monitor right now. Plus, I recently read something about "GSYNC ULTIMATE" coming out soon. I'm not sure exactly what it is. I believe it's just HDR and GYSNC combined but I could be wrong. For now my 1440p monitor is doing great and I don't play any games that offer ray-tracing. I've tried every game that had ray-tracing and it's not worth a 30-40 FPS loss for fancy reflections that I don't even notice unless I stare directly at them. I might buy a 3080 if it's leaps and bounds better than my 2080TI with DLSS & RTX off but I highly doubt it is at 1440p. I have a feeling the 3x cards are going to run much hotter as well. I don't care about DLSS either. It gave me a couple more FPS in Metro..that's about it(although I think DLSS is mainly for 4k, not 1440p). IMO ray-tracing and DLSS are good for marketing but for games it's been very underwhelming so far. I'm curious to see the reviews later today. *OP has a 1080. I'd upgrade to a 3080 and worry about the monitor later. You'll see significant improvements at 1440p.

Based on a lot of reviews I read today, the 3080 is overkill for 1440p. So it really provides future proofing at that resolution. But who knows what future hardware will bring once the "red vs green vs blue" battle heats up over the next 6 to 12 months. I have been 4k gaming since 2015 (Acer XB280HK). I started with Titans in SLI ... but soon I will FINALLY game at 60 fps ultra settings. This, after waiting 5 years lol. BTW .. I no longer .... future proof...

I would consider moving from 1440p to 4k but I am not sure it's something to do this fall. The 3080 is posting amazing numbers and at a much lower price point. It used to be for the last two years manufactures could count on someone looking for 4k gaming monitor to have of just dropped $1000 on a 2080Ti. Now that has dropped to $699 and that changes the market for gaming monitors big time. I would be waiting for CES 2021 or online versions given the pandemic to decide if it's right to go 4k now or wait for monitors shown to come out. I think what we saw from these numbers is 1440p just became the new 1080p for gaming and 4k being what gamers looking for a new monitor will probably be looking to buy. Now we just need to see the budget 4k gaming monitors to flood the market with the high end monitors really having to stand out in a way they didn't before.

I wouldn’t expect it to change that rapidly. Maybe now that a “true” 4K card is out at a much lower price point, but I’d bet that things will still move slowly. It took like 3 years for the PG35VQ and Acer X35 to hit the market. The Acer X27 and the PG27UQ still haven’t been entirely dethroned and those panels basically came out 2 years ago. It will take awhile for monitors to widely adopt HDMI 2.1 as well. So in essence - hurry up and wait longer.

FattysGoneWild Instead of making a whole new thread. A bit off topic. Do you think a FTW Ultra will fit okay in my case? Yes the gpu bracket is removable that helps hold my current 1080 Ti.
Seems like it will fit, but its going to be tight

If you want 144hz + guaranteed on modern games then 1440p / WQHD+ (ultrawide) is still going to be a sweet spot IMO.

4K is only worth it if you have a 144hz monitor. I'd rather game in 2k @ 144 than 4k @ 60.
