CS:GO and 65°C with custom fan curve ?
I think this Card had a really big problem from start on.
I mean CS:GO is really a joke for this card and should not reach this temperature.

but thats again not positive PR for evga....

I would take detailed pictures of the card and inside your case before sending the GPU back to evga. I would ask to speak to a manager, see what evga is willing to do if the gpu damaged other hardware.

If this starts  happening more often with 1080 ftw, i would be worried about leaving folding rig running over night or when no ones home. It could start a house fire.

I really hope so bec if this is the overheating issue then my card isnt gonna hold long bec i play a lot of ARK so it goes up to 71°C under load and stays around 65-70 degrees for like 4 hours straight... and i am still waiting for pads...

UPDATE
Jan from EVGA called and we spoke about my concerns and damage caused. He's working on rectifying the issue to my satisfaction.

The card is being collected tomorrow.

10/10 for Jan's phone call, I'll see if this helpful, friendly, and caring attitude continues and keep you updated.

I've just watched that video - mine was like that but a lot brighter (and part of the backplate continued to be red in colour), as well as visible smoke in the room. The smell was also highly noxious.

Correct. At this point no one should be purchasing any EVGA 10 series card.

I disagree. My belief is that something was overlooked on the PCB for the FTW cards. The FE, SC, and other models appear to not have this issue. That's just my opinion and I have no proof, but the number of faulty SC card reports is minimal on here.

Might have to do with the fact that the 1080 pulls more power? Anyhow, I hope you get a new mobo soon and be up and running asap!

A new motherboard has (edit):NOT been offered as it's "technically" working. The damage may just be superficial... but I'm not sure. My next plan is to test out the PCI-E slot and see what happens.

I would be careful with that so you dont fry another card. Also you meant has NOT been offered?

I was asked to test a spare 970 in the same slot. I'm a little hesitant to do so.

It is VERY interesting that you had the black screen + fan at 100% speed issue already and THEN the VRM exploded.

you should read this, a user quoted a EVGA support email a while ago where they say that they had a bad batch of VRMs that run out of spec and this entire black screen issue is a "Over Current Protection" mechanism:
 http://forums.evga.com/1080-FTW-owner-Am-I-the-only-one-thinking-that-all-this-is-a-bad-joke-m2574912.aspx#2575115

so far there has been no proof of a connection between the black screen issue and the exploding VRMs.
you just delivered a very interesting puzzle piece.
i think we now know what happens when this OCP mechanism fails... POOF.

It only happened a couple of times in Fallout 4 - no other game that I tried.

it just needs to happen once to know that you got one of the lucky 3 - 4% of cards from that bad batch of VRMs.

3 - 4 % thats a joke. The issue is across all units.

clear case to prove how good Evga's support really is. thumbs down for EVGA's US reply, that's a no go imo.

Yes, that left my fuming. I'm already off work due to high stress and I could do without this right now.

I also can't get rid of the burnt plastic and electronics smell from my apartment. I've moved the tower into another room, opened windows and doors, and I can still smell it.

Speaking from experience, part of the reason you smell it still is because your mind is tricking you into smelling it.   a few months ago from a crappy 4pin to SATA cable (from some cheap company, so I had no hope of getting compensated), and I've been smelling burning off and on to this day whenever I think about it.

Something like this happening is pretty mentally taxing and mildly traumatizing, so I can only hope EVGA will make things right with you, EVGA is a company that lives on brand loyalty, so it would be bad on them for stories like this to shake that loyalty.

I put in 160 hours of Witcher 3 with max settings on my 1080 FTW over the past five months (Core @ 2063 stable, Memory @ 11000 stable). About 20 hours each of Metro, MGSV, and BF4 as well.  This is with my i7 4790K oven right above it too.

I just applied the pads last night (mainly because I like tinkering with things). Did not notice any visible signs of overheating anywhere.

It sucks to see these failures happen. But I do not think it affects all units.

What do you mean my "mind is tricking" me? I started to cough and could see a light smoke/fog in the air in the room. I also saw smoke from the burning metal or other part coming from the PC...

If you still smell it, go and take a really hot shower for 20 minutes, blow your nose while in there. If you have a mustache / beard / hair, wash that too. :-)

This.  A link with text I had in my post appears to have been clipped out, losing some of the context of my post.  My PC caught fire a few months ago and I have been smelling burning off and on because I am still twitchy about the whole event.

What do you mean my "mind is tricking" me? I started to cough and could see a light smoke/fog in the air in the room. I also saw smoke from the burning metal or other part coming from the PC...

He's talking about your still smelling it...not during the event or immediate aftermath

This.  A link with text I had in my post appears to have been clipped out, losing some of the context of my post.  My PC caught fire a few months ago and I have been smelling burning off and on because I am still twitchy about the whole event.

Oh, sorry - I misunderstood. The smell has dissipated now after having my front door and all windows open. The inside of the chassis stinks as does the 1080 FTW, but that's to be expected.

Dude, that is just messed up! In regards to the odor you can't get rid of, try Ozium. It works on everything that I'm aware of, though I haven't had to use it in your particular situation, I think that at the very least it will reduce it to a tolerable level. Hope it helps & my sympathies.

Just a note: Make sure you don't mention this in another thread. I did and it was removed.

I'm very satisfied with my GTX 970 ftw+ but i just remember that the maxwell génération has known 3 different cooling systems (ACX, ACX 2.0 and ACX 2.0+) in  only 2 years of production, the first 970 (ACX) had a little misconception having some of its heatpipes not fully contacting the GPU, this issue didn't cause any damage as far as i know and was solved quickly but it makes me feel a little dubious with the cooling solutions EVGA has been carrying with the last GPU générations
