Hey folks, I received my thermal pads last week and finally decided to do the mod during the weekend after buying some isopropyl alcohol. Took my card apart as per the instruction, which btw, the guide missed a screw holding the PCB and the base plate so I had to figure that out myself. Once I split open the base plate, voila, one of the VRAM didn't have any thermal pad at all and another one with only half of it. As you can see in the picture, there are only 7 pads in total even though there should be 8. On the VRAM without the pad, you can also see there's no oil residue. I thought it might have fallen off while I was taking the card apart, but even after cleaning up everything after the mod, I can't find any pad. Anywho, doesn't look like there are any damages and I've applied the new pads so all is good, I hope. I was using a very aggressive fan profile since day 1, with the fan going to 90% if the card reaches 50 degree. I would advise people to check their card as soon as possible with how QC's been going for the Pascal cards. FYI, my card's an RMA one after the first got the black screen problem. Edit: grammar

The card that you have open to apply the pads is returned from rma (a replaced card) or the original (new sealed) that you buy from a store? I ask you because you write "cards".

I wish all this could be just a joke but we all know it isn't. I'm still waiting for the thermal pads to arrive so I can open my 1070 FTW. to be honest I'm a little scary about what I'm going to find out in there.

My bad, that was a typo, supposed to be "card's". This one is a sealed one that EVGA send back to me as replacement for the black screen one.

Thanks for the answer, at my opinion open rma again (advanced-cross ship) send it back, to replaced the card with correct way installment pads, you have the proof of the pictures, so don't stay with this card.

I'm really hesitant to do that since I live in Singapore, this means no cross ship no advanced RMA. The card OC quite well and most importantly, the LED works normally (hey, I didn't pay extra for the name FTW only)

I understand you.. Your thread make me thinking twice to send my card that I payed near 600€ (evga approved my advance rma) because I don't know what I would recieve (new or a bad refurbished card like the pics you post.

Even though my RMA card came in a sealed box, there's a high chance it's a refurbished one, since the plastic cover is stuck under the screws, an issue only people who got the first batch of cards encountered. EVGA Asia won't admit it though and just say sorry. I don't have a screwdriver with the correct size to remove it myself so those small bits of plastics are currently still stuck there.

Just stick the thermal pads on and move on. Is there anything wrong with the card? Other than the missing pad for the chip? If it is such a hassle I would deal with it till it does break.

If you look at the first photo to me the markings looks off. That is it looks like the original Thermal Pads were removed and a different brand of Pads put in the same place. It might just be my old eyes. The Light Colored Pads seems like they are not the Stock Pads. Where is the missing Pad (It did leave a Mark on the Plate)?

Your eyes are correct, there are marking of old pads being there. It's likely my card's a refurbished one since I saw people's pictures and theirs have the black pads. If someone has not received the thermal pads yet but have some spare thermal paste, I'd suggest opening the cards and check just to be safe.
