I was inspired by the simplicity of it all.  A solid copper DICE POT.  None of that Aluminum stuff going on here

Basically what we have going on here, is a 2" copper pipe, soldered to a sweat cap.  I haven't lapped it yet, but its on the to-do list.
The hold downs are 1/8" aluminum (yea there is aluminum going on here )

The top hold down plate is threaded for 6/32 screws (which you can find ANYWHERE) and my preferred method is screwing them from the bottom of the motherboard.

Welp, there you have it folks.   Anyone can make it.  This is currently set up for socket 775.  I have yet to try it, but it really is on the to do list.

Nice work. Do you have a thread that shows how to make that water block? or is that top secret?

this block here?  it is a copper sweat cap, soldered to a pipe.  nothing secret at all.  If you haven't soldered any kind of pipe before it may take you a while.  practice makes perfect.  ;)

...and finally... 2000 grit:

in case your wondering... the ENTIRE pot was sanded.  Zoom in to see how smooth the pot is.

I forgot to take pictures of the 1500 grit lap/sand.

This is probably a huge waste of time, aside from general sex appeal.  The reason why is this is pointless is the entire length of copper will be covered in insulation.  Just did it because I am a captive audience and stuck at work, and its really simple to sand a pipe.

Looks like another one of those "SLEEPER TROLL ACCOUNTS". They join months ago awaiting the time to come out of seclusion and hit and run. Just report it as abuse and the mods will take care of it.

Cleaning the post out is one thing but did you clean it's account out? It joined on 9/15/2009 and only post was this one. Def. a troll account.

I have absolutly no expierience with dice pots, nor have ever actually seen or held one nor have I done any real research, so all my assumptions are only that.  I am using this thread to gain knowledge, so correct any of my errors in assumption.

This is in my mind how a dice or l2n pot works.. and maybe I am half correct here because the boiling point of l2n is somewhere in the negative 360 degree range.. therfore the l2n would not stay as a liquid once you poured it into the pot, however, it would considerably cool the metal pot which would inturn cool the CPU for a period of time until the CPU heats the pot up again.. and maybe this is not true with dice (or either for that matter)...  maybe it stick around longer..   So if my theory on the operation of a pot is correct, would it be benificial to add more metal to the bottom of the pot inorder for it to have more area to store the cold from the l2n... I would assume anyway up to a certain point that it get too thick...

So if this is the case, would your design benifit from adding some extra copper in the bottom section (I only assume the cap is not very thick)?

I am very intrigued by your creation...  good job..  I am interested in how well it performs compared to others on the market.

Re:Another Blockman Nate Special.... DIY DICE POT! 2010/02/04 14:44:14 (permalink)
you are correct.  Ill go the dice route since I never did LN2 (yet)

you pour in an inch or so to acetone to distribute the cold to the sides, and bottom of the pot.  it essentially makes the pot cold, and as long as you throw in dice chunks every few minutes (when the cpu temps begin to rise) you throw in another chunk.

as far as LN2 goes, you just pour it in, and it will stay a liquid for a little while, then as the cpu temps rise it evaporates.  You then pour in more.

I have no idea how it will perform for comparison because I have nothing to compare it with.  But the more LN2/DICE you put in the pot, the colder it will get.  Are ya interested in one??

I will post more pictures when I actually hook it up to a 790/Q6600 combo, and get the foam etc ready.  Keep your eyes peeled over the weekend (unless we get pelted by a blizzard)

Did you do any kind of texture of the bottom interior of the pot to increase surface area, or is it just a completely smooth interior?

As far as overclocking goes, a heavier pot is ideal to control what we call "swing"  This is how much the temp will vary during load.  A pot like nateman's will have very high swing due to the low mass, this has its own advantages.  When your CPU or motherboard gets to cold it will get what is referred to as a "cold bug".  In order to alleviate that problem you either have to wait for the CPU to warm up or use a torch to bring the temp up.  The lower mass of this pot will greatly reduce the amount of time it will take to heat up.  Conversely when you have a much heavier pot, the time it will take to warm up is obviously much higher.  But this means when you have found the sweet spot of your CPU,  it will take considerably less ln2/dice to maintain those temperatures.
