I'm kinda disappointed that it didn't do much, but there ya have the silicon lottery, I just wished the FTW were better overclockers, but as it stands now there is no need to get a card above the base Acx 3.0 card.

A question from the comment section for that review: is the secondary bios on the ftw altered in any way?

The secondary Vbios is usually just a different fan speed profile, But Not having one to check out, I can't be sure.
Kind of thought it would be close to the base card performance.

I always felt like the second BIOS was to prevent bricking issues.  IF they find a way to boost performance through a BIOS hack, you can try it and still have another to switch over to if you mess up the flash or it doesn't work as it should.

Conclusion in case you are at work

    Conclusion

"As for EVGA, it hasn't really put a step out of line. We'd like to have seen a factory overclock on the memory and our own additional overclocking wasn't particularly impressive, but it's too early for us to say much more in that regard. What you do get is a respectable factory core overclock, a well made and good looking card, and a premium cooling solution that makes good use of its slightly boosted size to remain very quiet in all situations. The extra power circuitry credentials may appeal to some as well, and the RGB lighting and exclusive features in Precision XOC are neat too. Ultimately, the GTX 1080 FTW makes a compelling case for you to opt for it instead of the similarly priced Founders Edition, and EVGA does have the GTX 1080 SC if you're not fussed by the custom PCB. We'll also be testing more partner cards in the coming weeks as well as some GTX 1070 models, so stay tuned!"

OC.net and a few other sites have been working on ways to mod the Vbios, But even if they manage to raise the voltage/power limits, I think the resultant added Heat will come into play once again unless you use water cooling.

Question on the way they present temp data. This is the delta T, so the load temp is not 54C, but 54+ambient tempC?

Yes which means either the fans are by default set quite low or the cooling is actually rather bad.

I was expecting quite a bit more... especially considering how long i have been waiting for this card.
But the overclock can just be a really bad sillicon lotterly thing... but the cooling is quite disappointing.

Even if their ambient temp is 70F (21C), 75C?? I can't imagine. That's terrible. Makes me rethink this whole thing. :(

Guru3D shows the temp under load for the FE (during it's initial review) to be low 80's.  This card is 63.

How exactly do you get to 63?
It is 54 + delta... so unless they were in a room that was 9c i have doubt it.

I am just going to leave that one snide comment that other left before the review "but it has more VRM and two power plugs, it has to be better."

I guess everyone is going to wait for the classified now? I mean, it has more VRM than the FTW and two power plugs also.

Silicone lottery doesn't care about extra components. This is one card and proves nothing. Hence why this was all discussed and every bit of the "more VRM is better" fight was shot down.

Wait for end user reviews and samples. This isn't enough to do anything. If you believe one review, you are going to be seriously upset when one of these hits 2.2ghz.

I'm going by the temp listed in this chart:
    http://www.bit-tech.net/h...gtx-1080-ftw-review/18

Oh, 54!  Even cooler.  The entire card runs cooler than my 780GTX by about 8 degrees or so (under load, about the same idle), which is excellent.  I was looking at the wrong card is how I got 63 (oops).  In any case, 54 seems great to me.

It says 54 delta t..... under load.
So you need to add ambient to that ....

Well colored me not impressed at all, with the review. Now since they even said this is the first 1080 they have tested I will give them some slack. But that said, what is up with that pathetic OC? I mean we saw more than that for the FE cards, and that is with every review, not just one or two.

So really I'll wait until I see other reviews. Now if they are all like that then we have a problem.

These cards are previously overclocked. That's their purpose. Expecting anything else is foolish.  Anything extra is gravy. Like previously stated Silicon Lottery.

Yes, I definitely have concerns about the cooler.  That's the main thing that's keeping me from pulling the trigger now that the plastic issue has been fixed.  Can't have a $700 card throttling.

This struggled to 2.0ghz, i have seen FE's and Strix's hit near 2.1. Honestly, getting to 2.2 if a bios is unlocked really will barely make a difference. OC strix compared to stock FE bought in an extra 3-5% FPS. This extra 0.1ghz, yeah if you are a number whore it'd be great; For gaming purposes, you'll struggle to notice concernable difference

There was a problem with the fan shroud screws and the clear plastic shipping film that has been remedied.

I was able to hit a 100% stable clock (2 hours of stress testing to verify) of 2126MHz on my watercooled 1080 SC.  I'm thinking their review unit was just at the wrong end of the silicon lottery.  That being said, I have been very pleased with the purchase of the SuperClocked with its reference PCB, and 3rd party waterblock selection.

Those rights are spelled out in the Bill of Rights and in our Constitution. Voters and politicians alike would do well to take a look at the rights we each hold, which must never be chipped away by the whim of the majority."

Kinda happy i canceled.... both the FTW and the SC seem to have pretty sub par cooling solutions compared to the other board partners.

So ONE review of a particular card not getting as high OC is enough to make people jump ship? Boy oh boy talk about tunnel vision.

Go ahead... give me your queue position. Thanks!
