DirectX is an API that enables developers to add amazing graphics effects to Microsoft Windows-based PC games. DirectX 12 Ultimate is the newest version of the API and new gold standard for the next-generation of games. DX12 Ultimate takes games to a whole new level of realism with support for ray tracing, mesh shaders, variable rate shading, and sampler feedback. GeForce RTX is the first and only PC platform with support for these game-changing features.

It's an update and essentially just a rebranding.  Nothing too special.  Nothing too special compared to what we already had for the previous year.  Nothing too much will change.

Gamer's Nexus' unimpressed view on the announcement (starting at 20:30):

Vulkan Ray Tracing has more legs, I think. It can work on Windows, Mac, Linux, Playstation, and Xbox.

Microsoft, Sony, AMD, and NVIDIA are members of the Khronos group who are promoting and/or contributing to Vulkan.

DirectX is very mainstream, but is closed-source, proprietary, and has a smaller potential audience.

Unlike this update, Vulkan's Ray Tracing offering is new.

its ashame some games are DX12 only;..... I get the gains DX12 promises ; but there are millions of us out there with DX11 that need compatibility.     and DX12 gains are pretty small slim pickings from all the games i've seen.    the DX12 lockout isn't showing its worth it; and besides DX12 has been buggier when DX11 can still toast it for game performance

Vulkan's RT is basically a copypasta of Nvidia's RTX.

    And?

Since NVIDIA is a member of the Khronos group (as mentioned above), would you expect otherwise?

The point is that Vulkan ray tracing is much more cross-platform and therefore has greater potential, rather than this refresh of something which is closed-source and has largely already been around for a year.

    As I said here: https://forums.evga.com/Khronos-Group-Releases-Vulkan-Ray-Tracing-m3039426.aspx

    Cool GTX
Interesting all 3 major players - Nvidia, Intel & AMD are on board .. this will help speed adoption & benefit the consumers

Yup!  And Microsoft.  And Sony.  So, cross-platform potential is really good; even between PC and console, as long as Microsoft doesn't put up some sort of artificial barrier to Vulkan on their upcoming Xbox console.
