I know these things are fast, but if you put them in RAID, will the performance increase like the old HDD?

how much of a difference would going from a regular 7200RPM HDD to a decent SSD? loading time? download times? boot times? how about in RAID 0?

I was made a cannibal to fix problems like you

I't not uncommon for SSD's in raid 0 to max the windows experience index.
Here is mine with 4 VelociRaptors:

And here is the benchmark:

i would say if you are using your on-board raid controller you will cap @ 3 of the 120gb vertex 2's.

If you have the gen one Vertex that caps out at like 235 read and 135 write you would still pretty much put your computer to ease with 3-4 of them controller wise.

But strictly performance wise of course.

Real world performance wont be seen past 2-3  of them. But from 1 to 2 you will feel and see the difference. It is worth it if you fill your SSD up. You should leave like 20-30 gb free on that drive because the fuller the drive gets the slower it gets. SO realistically you would def be better off with 2x 120 or even 3 if you want. IT makes everything a lot faster.

For example i have never ever been outloaded in League of legends.

Due to my CPU/ Hard drives / Ram combo i have always loaded faster than 9 other people in every game that i have played which consists of 500+ games

This is a really old benchmark with old firmware on my raid card along with drivers.

With fast path and newer firmware my setup is like 1900 mb reads.

This is with 3x Intel X25-M G2 80 GB SSDs in raid 0 on a onboard ICH10R-controller (Asus R3E mobo).
I get 7.9 in WEI

My laptop has a single Intel X25-M G2 160GB SSD installed. It also gets 7.9 in WEI.

This is a bench of my raid 0 SSDs.

Well my storage is on my 2 1tb blacks in RAID, but thought of buying two 60 GB SSD if it would be faster than my one 120gb SSG (Read - 250 Write - 180)

The last time i benched before i took my rig apart for my rebuild i benched with the new LSI firmware and was using ( i am using a raid  I you didnt understand :P )
You run winsat disk by hopefully using windows 7 :P. Open Command prompt as administrator  and type the following

Winsat Disk

To run my benchmarks. After a few hours one of my drives went bad so i had to RMA it :P. Oh wells.

BUt yes to OP

Sell that 120 and pick up 2x 60 gb VERTEX 2 and you will LOVE IT. Trust me.  Wait for a sale and pick em up =)

Vertex 2 is hands down the king of the road ATM for read/write performance. It wins like every award as did the older vertex models. Intels are overpriced and slow compared to the Vertex 2
There is a sale now going on @ newegg for the 80 GB models

I have another question then, I have used all my sata ports except the JB Micron ones. If I get another SSD I will be forced to use them, anyone have any opinion on that?

I had an 128gb SSD OCZ-drive in my laptop.. after 1 yr of use it was just as "slow" as a regular harddrive.. I upgraded it to the Intel G2 X25-M 160gb.. Huge difference!
I dont know, if the Intel ones are the best but I think they are good. Mu intel 160-drive is now more than 1 yr old and it is still running at full speed. No loss in read/write thanks to TRIM-support. I dont know if other drives support TRIM nowadays, but the intel ones used to be the only ones who did.. ( at the time I bought it).  I just want you to know that the SSDs from intel are great. Maybe other products are great as well but you wont do anything wrong getting an Intel SSD.

Well my 120GB came with firmware 5.0 which has the TRIM. I have not noticed a drop in performance. I know it still boots super fast. No doubt the newer ones are better. THx

you paid 530 bucks per drive just to get the write above the standard 75 mb... since you have two of them that would equate to 1060 bucks. he could buy a raid card for 300-450 bucks and 4 x 50 gb drives and call it a day by spending 900 bucks. That would allow him to get 1000 reads and 1000 writes.

so what is more realistic?

First I have had no problems with my current OCZ. So I have no reason not to trust them. People will always have issues with computer parts. Some more than others. I googled and saw issues with the crucials just as well.
I was going to consider the crucials, but OCZ has done me well, and the crucials might be better speeds, but I know for a fact that the 2 ocz in RAID will do me well.
The future proof with SATA III would be correct, but by the time I actually by a SATA III MB, I am sure there will be much better SSD's out. That is the problem with computers, is they are always a never ending hole.
I appreciate everyones input and it all goes along way.
"I WISH WE COULD ALL JUST GET ALONG" LOL
I do appreciate your input Falcon.

Have a pair of the OCZ SSD's and they are very nice drives. Was a good upgrade.

Yeah, The new firmwares really opened up the LSI  Controller.

Try to do this in Command prompt as admin and show me your numbers Moose   ( winsat disk)

here are my numbers before one of my SSDs went bad and i had to get an RMA.

This is a 1mb stripe size

> Disk Sequential 64.0 Read 1933.80 MB/s 7.9
> Disk Random 16.0 Read 207.80 MB/s 7.8
> Responsiveness: Average IO Rate 0.29 ms/IO 7.9
> Responsiveness: Grouped IOs 5.50 units 7.9
> Responsiveness: Long IOs 1.57 units 7.9
> Responsiveness: Overall 8.62 units 7.9
> Responsiveness: PenaltyFactor 0.0
> Disk Sequential 64.0 Write 1244.74 MB/s 7.9
> Average Read Time with Sequential Writes 0.284 ms 7.9
> Latency: 95th Percentile 0.683 ms 7.9
> Latency: Maximum 38.740 ms 7.9
> Average Read Time with Random Writes 0.446 ms 7.9
> Total Run Time 00:00:56.94

The funny thing is like an hour before  one of my drives went back and with the new LSI firmware i had these numbers

> Disk Sequential 64.0 Read 2496.89 MB/s 7.9
> Disk Random 16.0 Read 212.08 MB/s 7.8
> Responsiveness: Average IO Rate 0.36 ms/IO 7.9
> Responsiveness: Grouped IOs 6.10 units 7.8
> Responsiveness: Long IOs 2.50 units 7.9
> Responsiveness: Overall 15.22 units 7.9
> Responsiveness: PenaltyFactor 0.0
> Disk Sequential 64.0 Write 1226.32 MB/s 7.9
> Average Read Time with Sequential Writes 0.287 ms 7.9
> Latency: 95th Percentile 0.699 ms 7.9
> Latency: Maximum 38.129 ms 7.9
> Average Read Time with Random Writes 0.430 ms 7.9
> Total Run Time 00:00:57.05

Now i dont know how accurate the second benchmark is because my drive died like an hour afterward so who knows!

Check this guys post out. Computard on the OCZ forums is badass when it comes to raid cards and advice. He has tested them all :P. Maybe you can pick something up in the middle of that thread  about his take on stripe sizes and speed your array up a bit!

The worst is when i upgraded the LSI Firmware and it went crazy cause of my EVGA board. That beeping noise almost made me go deaf and i had to use my gf computer to back flash to an older firmware.

Btw whats your forum name on OCZ! Or are you on another forum with him cause i know he is on many forums :P.

good drives though ! the original 30gb vertex are pretty good for daily use in a large array like ours! i like your taste ;P

Falcon_CMH once advised me and some other dudes to wait a little bit on the SSD's on a thread I opened in awhile ago.. Intel's going to release some new awesome SSD's this month, with alot of capacity and much faster, and less pricey than the current ones.. so yea.. am gonna wait for the SSD's a little bit.. probably until the end of this month.

But if you're willing to buy an SSD right now.. the Crucials SSD's are the best so far.. I don't actually like OCZ drives tbh with ya.. just go to newegg.com and see the reviews about their SSD's being not able to last so long and die fast.. the company almost went bankrupt last year.. so they had to float it just to keep it alive.. and they are no longer making RAM's.. which makes things more obvious of what I'm talking about.. I hate to buy from a company which has a very stained reputation.
