When EVGA restocks the GTX 780 Classified will it continue to have Elpida memory or will EVGA move to Samsung? Cheers, DBD

Aye, well that is unfortunate and thank you for the follow up Viper. Edit: Thanks Jacob and Johnson. Just saw your post over on overclock Jake: I take it ASUS is buying up all of the Samsung memory for their DirectCU II 780s. Thanks again for your time you guys. :) Cheers, DBD

Elpida for the forseable future, this may change as supply changes. I imagine you will see both in the future.

Now that Elpida is owned by Micron I don't foresee any problems

How can a man tell which memory is he using ? Does buying a GPU on the day the GPU was released is guaranteed to have the Samsung memory ? I guess I have the Samsung memory since I bought my GTX 780 SC since the day it got released and because I can overclock the memory +500mhz :)

Yes it probably is if you bought it right at launch.

I have a launch classified that's memory overclocks to 7000+, and I have another classified that I bought used that only can go to 6500. The first is definitely samsung , and I'm assuming the second is elpida

Does anyone here statistics? Just because 1 memory type on a card overclocks better than another memory on another card doesn't mean generally the memory overclocks worse/better. Elpida is just as good and it was all a bunch of fear mongering rumors that it all sucks and can't hold a candle to Samsung chips.

Im currently running +595 on my memory. Thats 7200mhz or 3600mhz or 1800mhz depending on ur u like to read memory frequencies. I have yet to see it cause any issues at this frequency and i havnt even reach my max yet during testing. I just stoped at frequency on a whim :P I am goign to be replacing my TIM some time this week as i get high temps with just 1.175mv (the max my bios alows), when i do that ill check see what memory i have. My Classified was one of the 1st batches from Scan.co.uk and to my knowledge scan was the only retailer in the UK that had them available at the time. I got mine on the 8th August, during which time scan went out of stock immediatly and was due a second batch on the 12th. So 'maybe' i have samsung memory ..maybe i dont.. ether way im happy with it. The GPU core itself is runing hot, im hoping its just a bad stock TIM application, if not then i just have a hot runner, but at 1254mhz clock(+79) at just +13mv(1.175v) thats pritty good.

This is very sad thing what I hear for me and I hope once in future Classified series will stay from first to last sample same. Last year that was EVBot now Classified worse memory than DirectCU II. Elpida destroy Dominator series once. How this things annoy me that is chaos. EVGA for Classified as specialized brand for NVIDIA must be better than others in almost all aspects. If every others have 3GB she must have 6GB as biggest NVIDIA partner only for them. Best parts inside, chosen chips, highest fabric clock on market as 580 Classy. Now Classified will became only nicer look than others and even some normal series as DirectCU II not ROG series have better memory vendor and obvious better OC memory. I know memory is not 20% important as GPU Clock but again that's Classified. I say normal ASUS series because ASUS still didn't launch ROG graphic. That's Classified for them. Did EVGA plan to launch Titan Classified than???

I think people are making too big of a deal about memory in general for these 780 cards. I have a 780 Hydrocopper with the Elpida memory running at +600 (7200) and really the difference between +600 and 0 is pretty small overall. I think people are thinking about how important memory bandwidth was for the 680 GTX since it was bandwidth starved. Lets put it this way while I was pushing my card trying to find a stable memory overclock the difference between +0 and +600 was a little less than 200 points in 3DMark11 extreme.

I know improvements in score is very little with memory OC. I know that very well and I never push memory hard. How long is Elpida present in Classifieds I mean when they start to ship with Elpida??? I can't miss 780, that is not GK104, this is real high end chip and I long time decide GK110. I don't expect some big improvement in performance for 600-700$ soon. Max 20% next card. Maybe for 1000$ but that is not my class. Never mind on their site write Elpida is Micron now.

I am not aware of any GPU partner that is exclusive to any one vendor of memory. It is pretty standard to have at least 2 vendors of memory certified.

You should be able to tell by the revision number, a little sticker on the back of the card. That's how I found out my Classy's were all Elpida. Not that I'm complaining, under water I understand Elpida are just as good as the sammy's and if you aren't putting a classy under water, you're wasting everyone's time :D

Funny that MSI got slammed pretty bad in the Lightning 780 Hardware Canucks review vs the EVGA Classified 780, for the use of Elpida memory vs Samsung memory in the EVGA boards. Now EVGA is using it as well.

EVGA only uses it because SAMMY doesn't have enough to provide it at the price EVGA is willing to pay.

Doesn't matter. EVGA must still consider the Elpida memory to be acceptable to meet their performance specs or they would not use it. I don't think they downgraded specs because of it. Of cousre the issue is "overclockability" (if there is such a word) and the review was emphasizing the desirability of the EVGA because it used the Samsung memory. Now its a mute point because both brands use the Elpida memory (or at least there is no guarantee you will get Samsung memory in any particular EVGA production unit).

No because Samsung no enough memory because of that I stay with EVGA, but I expect better planing next time and even stop of shipping for 2-3 weeks only for Classified class better than destroying name. I mean, I would wait I swear until Samsung show up and EVGA start to ship again. I wouldn't go on MSI Lightening or DirectCUII. I'm not sure Lightening too no Samsung or they have... I don't know but never mind with Samsung or not in MSI I would wait on EVGA. MSI sometimes overclock their cards more and cause instability and people later drop clock or increase voltage. It's obvious EVGA didn't put every GK110 in Classified because no complains on instability with factory OC.

Actually the Elpida news is from a few months ago. The supply on Samsung has since then improved, and we have only been using Samsung for some time.
