That just makes me sad to see. I've known a few companies who have for a short time done something similar but they've cleaned it up before going into production. That is just intolerable.

Well, if its all labeled properly, mess aside, the functionality and ability to troubleshoot is all that. That said tho, when it is that messy, they usually didn't bother to take the time to label.

I label cables on both ends, with the label saying where the OPPOSITE end of the cable goes. Then regardless of how bad of a rats-nest it is, you know where the other end is, and can verify by the other end of the cable being labeled with the location of the original starting point.

The difference between a lazy IT and a good IT is things like that. It's simple to make custom cables. Just need a decent crimper tool.

Yeah but it also comes down to management too, I have had managers before that didn't want me to take the time to make cables custom for things simply because he could get them cheaper if ordered pre-made, wether they fit well or not. Especially when you are in a company that wants everything to have tested validation BOTH directions. When you are paying someone 50/hr, you really want him working on getting all the equipment configured correctly, not making custom cables to make it slightly more neat than if you ordered proper length cables to begin with and put them in the management devices like you are supposed to.

Then you also have places like where I work that have a 300MB word document listing all the network devices you can and can't use. They literally don't allow custom cables. The company specification says that every patch cable MUST be a panduit cat6 cable with strain reliefs and anti snag devices. You know the ones that are $30 for a 15' cable.

I would rather make custom cables for all my jobs, but management just wont have it.
