Newegg was accepting back-orders on the FTW card for about 3 hours.  Since they hadn't been taking any back orders previously, I assumed they were expecting a delivery of XXX number of cards and took a corresponding number of back-orders.  That's probably wishful thinking.

Anyway, Nvidia really gave customers and 3rd party manufacturers the shaft on this deal.  But oh, hey look... there are plenty of self-branded FE cards available on Nvidia's webpage... scumbags....

But you can only back-order one card.  I've been going SLI since the voodoo days.

"We can make 2 times as much if we sell them as our own brand!" - Nvidia ...

It does suck ...but ..hey..it's their product...can do what they want, really

Ie: We can make 2 times as much because we don't have to give a reseller discount on large quantities

    ya, I've heard that....

Literally everyone that carried a 1080 ball has dropped it.

-nvidia "oh, nobody wants an over-priced, underlocked FE card? k, that's the only card that will be available for the first 3 months"
-evga "oh, you pre-ordered 3 months ago?  well we're sending our first shipments to retailers instead"
-newegg "oh, we have back-orders?  let's just ship our cards to whoever happens to press F5 at exactly 6:21pm instead of fullfilling those.  he deserves it"

I believe Newegg doesn't charge you via a credit card until it is in the shipping phase. I would think that packaging means it is in the shipping phase.

I had the same experience with my 1080-ftw "back-order."  Two days after I placed the order, my credit card was charged and my order status changed from back-order to "packaging."  The tool-tip for "packaging" basically says my order has been charged and products are being collected in the warehouse.  It also says, "Please note, you may no longer make changes to your order."

So basically I'm stuck in limbo.  My credit card has been charged, but my 1080 hasn't shipped.  Usually I would be optimistic and assume my 1080 will ship in the next 24 hours.  However, since this whole release has been so terribly botched, I can't help but wonder if this is Newegg's way of screwing all of the people who placed pre-orders on a dozen different websites with the intention of cancelling them all as soon as the first order ships successfully.  Meaning: they don't have any 1080s yet, but they're locking down everyone's money until they get some.  I guess I'll know that's what happened if I don't get a tracking number in the next few hours.
