noob question, should i plug my computer directly to the wall or use an AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator)

i have a 1200w power supply and you guys can see all my system's specs on the end of this message.

i always used an AVR with all my important electronic devices such as LCDs, and computers. but this is my first gamer build so is like my first powerful computer, so since it could consume 1200w i was wondering if its ok to keep it plugged to the AVR when the AVR only says up to 1000w output.

i would like to know if you guys with similar systems plug your computers directly to the wall or if you use a voltage regulator.

I have my system all plugged into a 900 watt UPS battery backup that has AVR in it. I have an 850watt PSU powering the system and under full load, the max draw I have ever seen on the UPS was 452watts....so, I doubt you would actually see a 1200 watt draw. Just a thought. I would not want to plug straight into the wall socket.

is just that i been having some shutdown problems while playing heavy graphic games @ max settings like mafia II, so was looking for what would be causing the shut down problems, and after test each component i plugged the computer directly to the wall the shut down disappeared! so someway the AVR is shutting down when the computer consumes more energy @ max load. i will try to buy a UPS to see if it work better because my avr is just regular without battery

Quick suggestion.  When looking at a UPS make sure it's compatible with your power supply.  A PSU with active PFC (Power Factor Correction) can be pretty temperamental when it comes to the modified sine wave generated by most of the less expensive UPS'.
EX: My silverstone DA1KW PSU would instantly shut down when ever my old APC BR1500LCD  UPS would kick in.  My new APC SUA1500 UPS has no effect on it at all.

mike makes a very good point...sound advice indeed.

Here is the UPS that I have been using for about a year now with no issues whatsoever. It is a darn good deal too...a little better than I got on mine.

that is the sign of your ups not supplying enough juice to your computer you have 2 options buy an ups that exeeds your hardwares max power consumption by 300 or so watts to make sure your machine is not getting cheated on power, or do what I had to do because I didnt want to spend the money on a 1500w APC/UPS and ended up buying a really good surge protector that covers up to 20 grand in computer equipment.

I've never used a UPS, as I'm not interested in Data recovery in power outages. If my PC shuts down; I'll just power it back up, and keep going. Nothing to lose; nothing to gain. I use a Tripp-Lite power bar, with all the good stuff; like Donta recommends, and am quite happy with it. It protects my hardware; and thats what I care about. Only had two power outages in the last year though; so, I can't say it would be a big concern anyway.

always use a UPS or some kinda surge protector for long term use, never go directly to the wall unless its temporary or just to test something.

I don't get many outages where I live but, do get alot of what I call glitches....where the power just goes off and on real quick. That's the reason why I quit using just a surge/lightning protected power strip. Even the fastest glitches would abruptly shut my system down and it made me cringe every time because that can cause serious damage. I do not have any actual need to run on the battery but, the UPS unit does protect my rig from those occurrances.

I have a similar question. I have the Corsair ax 1200 watt psu and makes a bad coil whine sound. Some user's experience this and others don't when looking at the newegg comments about the PSU. It hasn't been a big enough problem but I'm wondering if its impart due to the wall outlet not producing clean power. I am thinking about buying the same cyber power UPS listed above. I have the same power issues as jeffreyham where my power shuts off for 1-2 seconds and it kills the computer. This happens around once a month or so.

EVGA Power Supplies forum concerns questions about EVGA Power Supplies. Since this is a third party PSU I'll move this thread to the correct forum.

There is NO reason for a Upc power supply unless you are looking for Blackout-Brownout protection.
Or your electrical service cannot provide the proper 50-60hz

    If you are having issues...
I would double check that your home wiring is properly grounded.

Double check that your voltage at the outlet is between 110-120v or 210-240
