hi, i have plenty of questions if i may but i'll just give a quick brief on what is happening to the above mobo and parts that i've put together.
motherboard is a XFX  NFORCE  680i  SLI 775 (not verified to be working bought on ebay)
motherboard P33 BIOS (not verified by me but by the seller on ebay)
cpu is an E8400 (not verified to be working bought on ebay)
OCZ 2gb PC2-6400 DDR2-800 (2gb x 4 sticks) working
512mb xfx graphics card in slot nearest cpu, two different cards but same specs have been tried but still the same
zalman 9500 hsf with fresh arctic silver 5 it's working
i get all fans running blue yellow and green lights on the mobo, 8 pin connected to mobo 6 pin to the graphx card, but the cpu is cold.
I haven't tried the basic barebones set-up yet but i will soon
I want to try and make sure the mobo is working asap, what cpu should i buy just to test?
Any help or ideas members can offer me would be more than appreciated, i am due in work early in the morning til around 8pm 2moro eveing but i will be back, thanks.

Moved your thread to General Hardware as XFX hardware would fit best under this forum.

Any POST codes on the LED or any motherboard beeping?..Did you try clearing CMOS?..An XFX 680i SLI and an EVGA 680i SLI are the same, for all intents and purposes, the manual is here if you need it..You can go by the Motherboard goes straight to FF without any video or beeps troubleshooting FAQ for tips..CPU support is here for the board.

hi bob thanks for the reply i appreciate it. I have reset the cmos I've had various error codes on the mobo they are, 10, 26, 49 and 50. i've used the same hard disk ssd sandisk 120, the same memory as above, and the same spec grphx card x 2 but still no joy.
What i'd like to do for my own peace of mind is buy an older compatible cpu, pop it in and take it from there sort of back to basics. Can anyone recommend a suitable cpu? Thanks for the link btw.

You're welcome..Any Wolfdale E8xxx or Kentsfield (with or without the X, which is an Extreme processor) CPU in the nForce 6 Series column of the CPU support list will do..Whatever you can find around these days..It may be more simple/cost effective to just take the E8400 to a PC repair shop for testing it real quick, and check the CPU socket for bent/broken pins while you're at it.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by the CPU being cold? If the CPU itself is cold then it is dead.

hi bob and mills thanks for taking the time to reply. Regarding the pins i'm they were ok, my thinking with the cpu was to get an older one or i could put in a different e8400 to try that one.
the chip was cold (chip is dead?) even after 5 minutes of running, but the zalman hsf was working.
when i'm off on wednesday i'll have more time to look at it, i'm just trying to work out a checklist and things that i haven't tried yet.
