Anyone out there using both Displayport + HDMI simultaneously for audio and video, with a surround receiver?

I am upgrading my PC with a 1080ti and a 144hz monitor, interested in adding a surround system with receiver, and hooking up displayport cable to the monitor, and a standalone HDMI to the receiver for the audio.

It can work just fine. Depending on how the receiver works/presents itself via EDID, it could be as simple as just going into the NV control panel and extending your display (DP as primary, HDMI as secondary) then set the audio output to HDMI. Some receivers might need you to hook up an HDMI monitor during setup, and fewer still might require an HDMI dummy plug like so (tricks it into thinking a monitor is plugged in): https://www.amazon.com/CompuLab-fit-Headless-Display-Emulator/dp/B00FLZXGJ6

Thanks, that is helpful. Found this as well, the article is quite dated but mentions older titles with Directsound and keeping a standard sound card around to run those titles.

I wonder is Displayport will slowly overtake HDMI as the mainstream standard for video+audio cabling, or if HDMI and Displayport will continue to coexist? I can't seem to find any receivers with Displayport.

looks like i have not made anough posts to submit a URL just yet :)

That only gets you compressed surround audio (DD, DTS). To get uncompressed audio (Dolby-TrueHD, DTS-HD) you have to use HDMI.
