You could try and create an air duct and channel all the air from the lower front case fan directly under the card, so it would always get fresh air.

So under heavy load my gpu can go up to 87c MAX! (more around 80-85c)
Is this safe?

This picture shows it. The fans on your graphics card are boxed in by the power supply that's mounted straight underneath it, and any heat that's coming from your power supply is going straight up into the video card fans. There's no obvious airflow going past those fans. Whatever airflow you have is blown over the top of it.

You probably would have done better in this case with the blower type fan. My guess is that your absolute best bet to lower the temps is to spring for a water block for that 1080. The case is certainly well set up to support it.

Oh the difference a full atx tower makes on temps.  If it was me I'd butcher that mid tower and put fans everywhere. Create better air flow and you might not need another case. I'd pull off the side panel until you do this.

So running without the side panel lowered temps by only 2c..

I have a Corsair 780T chassis and when running a GTX 1080 FTW while folding (which uses about 100 percent of the GPU) my GPU temp never exceeds 55 degrees.

Well i just bought some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut 5,55g since taking the side off didn't help the temps.

Good deal. Have you ever reapplied thermal material on a gpu? If you have, then there isn't a reason to explain it. If yiu haven't and would like help, there are tons of really helpful people here.

If this doesn't seem to work, I'm quite surprised no one has mention the possibility of buying the upcoming hybrid kit for the FTW? I know it's not released yet.
But can really benefit OP's rig layout don't you think?

Re: Worried about GPU temp (1080 FTW) Thursday, July 14, 2016 11:28 AM (permalink)
Easy way to test if its terrible airflow which i think it is, open ur sidepanel of the case and and see if the temp drops, if it does ur airflow goes over the gpu cause its so cramped down there. I wouldnt think its too little thermal paste on it when they add ridicolous amount to them when they put them together. You might need to add a fan that blows air below the card, or ramp up the speed of the outtake fans aswell to test if temp change, with these cards a good airflow is rule nr 1. Cause they blow all the air into the case and if ur fans isnt removing it fast enough it just goes around in ur case which heat up ur card even more.

Re: Worried about GPU temp (1080 FTW) Thursday, July 14, 2016 12:26 AM (permalink)
My personal opinion:
That is a great looking case, however I do not believe it is conducive for an ACX style GPU. You would almost need a side panel fan blowing in on the GPU, and obviously you would not want to do that to that pretty case.

I think for your rig as it is now, you need a blower card.
Having said that, while your temps are high you are still within the safety zone for the GPU.  If you can get the temps down by just a few degrees it would help for peace of mind, whether that be new TIM, or perhaps going back to default core clocks/power target. And of course if you can live with the fan blowing full blast during gaming...

First step, try to run with the side panel off. If temps reduce greatly to mid/high 70's C, then you know the issue. Otherwise it would be a botched thermal paste application.

I'm trying out some different things atm, I have a 3d printer so I can try and make a vent so the fan blows directly of the card.

Yeah my 1080GTX F.E rarely gets hotter than 55C but I have seen it hit 62-64F on higher end games like Metro LL. Still, for a aftermarket cooler, the FTW should not be getting that hot. How many case fans do you have rocking? I have 9x 120mm in my Antec Eleven-Hundred, this definitely is the reason my cpu/gpu runs so cool. Antec has such great cooling solutions.

Okay things have improved, from a max of 87c down to a max of 81c by installing a larger fan closer to the GPU, since this is just a test ill be printing an air duct that looks decent.

Id show a pic but imgur won't let me upload for now.

Sounds like you are certainly going in the right direction. Hopefully you can get it to where temp is reasonable and GPU fan does not have to blow at 100%.  Nice having a 3d Printer available!
How are your stock idle temps with fan not blowing?

Gpu runs at 85c with the panel off.

That's a major issue then and points at defective cooling on the GPU itself. Could be it is not fastened properly (the heatsink and the PCB) or it could mean that the thermal paste is botched. Worth checking, every so often thermal paste applications can get botched. Usually this is the most critical, cause if it is done wrong, it affects temps greatly.

85C with panel off at 100% fan speed is NOT NORMAL and points at a serious issue especially with the fact that the FTW cooling solution should be pretty decent.

Also, 100% fan should be very loud...so make sure they're spinning (both) in the first place.

Well i checked the screws, they are tight. And i did just order some new paste. + im working on the new airflow system that dropped temps around 5-7c from 86-87c.

Have you tried to put an ambient fan (a big one) right on the case with side panel off ?

Alright im finally where i want to be, its very DIY atm but it will look much better once i design one for 3d printing. Check out these temps 74c with 72% fan! also higher boost clock.

Haha thanks! I feel much better now that it doesn't max out at 87c, still gonna apply some paste tho. So im sure it's done right.

@alientek
I would also try operating this very same lower placed fan in the front as an exhaust fan.
in this rather small case you get definitely a real hot air jam.
so it could be maybe more useful to get the hot air out of the case instead of pushing more cool air in.
it's worth trying in my opinion.
