As long as the underlying problem continues to exist, this will be the result from time to time. This isn't a specific game problem.

These cards have an underlying design issue. Blame whatever you want, but if the design issue didn't exist, the card wouldn't fail.

The problem is that the NVIDIA power monitoring design is not designed to prevent momentary power spikes which exceed the VRM's capability. Each time one of those spikes occurs, there is a chance that the VRM will fail. At the moment, the solution appears to be that you should replace the video card via warranty if it fails within warranty period, and eventually retire the video card for a newer design (which hopefully better handles/avoids the problem).

I personally don't think that we are seeing anything out of the ordinary for these cards. If it was a power spike then cards wouldn't be going for over a year and then having an issue. It could be just a bad game patch though. I am not saying that cards are not dying but It's not thousands of reports that would happen if it was a design flaw that will kill every card made.

Not all 3000 series cards have the problem. FE cards and KPE cards don't have issues.

All the cards are unable to drop boost fast enough to avoid spikes. NVIDIA uses an average power limit instead of an instantaneous power limit. And the VRM of many models appears to have hardware overcurrent protection set way too high to really protect them from damage over time.

I think the biggest difference in the specific cards is what the VRM is capable of versus their typical loads. The Kingpin doesn't have problems because the VRM is able to handle way more than will ever normally occur. And the FEs don't have problems because their standard power limit is way lower than the VRM is capable of. If the average power limit is lower, the instantaneous spikes will also be lower.

The cards with the most problems are the ones riding the upper limit of the reference design. But again, the root cause is the inability to detect instantaneous power spikes.

Hey, Sajin; all these posts about dying 30 series cards are bringing me down .  Making me scared to thrash some games, and benchmarks, and such like I want to .
Are there any 3080 xc3 ultra cards that are not affected, or are they badly affected, what say you ?

I’d say your chances are lower with the 3080 xc3 ultra.

G-sync on or off shouldn’t affect your benchmark scores. Just make sure v-sync is off.

WOWs spikes my GPU in the Port and secondary screens (tech tree, etc.).  Am also seeing much lower frame rates since the update (144 -> 30).  Have undervolted my card (.825/1860) which took care of the thermal power draw problem.  Frame rate issue is not related to the undervolt (similar FPS when card is OC).
