I'm kind of surprised this hasn't been posted yet.  But W3 is getting updated to have ray tracing with the expected update to be in 2021.  Also, free update for to next gen consoles for those who plan on getting one if you own it on Xbox One or PS4.

If it were anyone but CDPR, I would have no excitement at all, because all too often such new-gen console upgrades or "remasters" ported back to PC include one or more significant steps backward along with any improvements.

Hopefully CDPR doesn't take their made-for-console upgrade and simply toss-port it to PC as everyone else does, and just works from the existing PC version, enhancing it as necessary.

I remember when they added HDR to console's version of the Witcher 3, but not the PC version. Seems PC will be getting HDR and Ray-tracing at the same time now.

For my part, I would much rather the game get improvements to more fundamental visual aspects. Maybe it will...I don't know.

Weird that they think it needs any kind of 'remaster' already.?
I'm guessing it's just to get it sold on a new gen of consoles with improved effects....

You're right to put "remaster" in quotes, lol: it's nonsensical marketing fluff, as one can't re-master something that wasn't mastered to begin with. The main issue is that if you are talking about something for which the term actually applies--like audio/video recordings--you know what to expect. With software, it can mean anything, which I'm guessing is the whole point, lol.

But yeah, that's what it always is...a means of selling a game to owners of a new generation of consoles. On PC, the concept makes little or no sense and worse, the result is often objectively worse in one or more aspects. They go ahead and toss-port them to PC because "Why not?" It's extra money. E.g., here is one of the first comments from OP's link:

"Will I be able to play non-next generation edition on Steam? I don't want any more of those Definitive Editions and whatnot that don't have significant difference but drops the FPS by 20-30, LOL, SMH."

The only example I can think of right now that provided a demonstrable benefit to PC (among multiple significant issues/downgrades) is the 64-bit capability of Skyrim for modding. But again, it was just a toss-port--a 64-bit version would never have otherwise arrived on PC. The fact is that, for those who don't do serious modding--not just modding, but serious modding--the original release is better for multiple reasons.

Regarding my original comment about hoping they work from the existing PC version, another comment from OP's link makes a similar point, though regarding Playstation rather than PC:

"i hope for the PS5 version that you will start the update from the PC max settings as a base instead of the PS4 Low settings version, i'm not interested in a low texture, low draw distance ray traced ps5 version, i want better graphics overall"

As I implied earlier, I hold CDPR apart from every other AAA company because its business practices are starkly different. It has nothing to do with emotion (I haven't even yet tried The Witcher 3! I'm getting ready to read through the books again, and then after my 5th playthrough of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and 2nd playthrough of TW2, I'll finally experience it!).

So CDPR is the only company that I would not automatically assume would just toss-port their new console product to PC and call it a day (And no, to play "devil's advocate", the presence of ray tracing would not be evidence against that, as it is a tacked-on aspect that NVIDIA expends effort to realize; i.e. it could be tacked on to a toss-port just as well as it could a genuine effort).

I am excited to see what they do. Hopefully they upgrade the textures and really make it look as next generation as possible. I guess it doesn’t matter that much since it’s a free upgrade. To me it’s great to know they don’t want to force people to rebuy the game for this update.

Based on the language of their press release, it sounds like you may get your wish.  Ray tracing appears to be only one of the visual improvements being addressed in the update.

"the next-gen edition of the game will feature a range of visual and technical improvements — including ray tracing and faster loading times..."

Well, I could be wrong, but I would imagine that particular info is in reference to the console version whose overall settings, or performance in areas like load times, I don't think ever reached that of the PC. But it's CDPR, so as you said: I may still get my wish.

I just started a Death March playthrough. I'm thinking about waiting for this update now. Hell, the game already looks really good. RTX will be awesome with it.

I actually haven't had a chance to play this game yet. I'm super stoked I'll get to play it with ray tracing. Even more excited about cyberpunk with ray tracing.

Ooohhhh....You could have purchased it at GOG.com, where not only is the game 100% DRM-Free, but your money goes directly to CDPR.

I have never heard of replacement textures for any game that are true to the original aesthetic and even match their quality, much less exceed it. I'm speaking on the whole, as I don't think it counts when some textures are great and others are scary. Replacement textures are pretty much a subjective change, and not an objective improvement. But I would be really pleased if the one you're talking about actually succeeds in doing the job.

At any rate, CDPR wouldn't need to work with a modder. Textures are sampled from high quality artwork at the resolution necessary for the target HW. All the developer has to do is create higher-quality textures from the original art--which is what devs hardly ever bother to do.

In fact, going back to Skyrim, and perhaps earlier, devs started releasing fake "HD textures" which are nothing more than the exact same textures without compression, or the same textures uselessly saved at 4x the resolution. Most AAA devs have so little respect for gamers that they think they will assume the textures are much higher resolution simply because they have a much larger file size.

That's the kind of thing that I would never expect CDPR to do, though.

There's always The Witcher: Enhanced Edition! A masterpiece, without question.

Unfortunately, many people didn't realize that the combat isn't 1-Click-1-Hit like most games, and is in fact timing based like the Batman: Arkham games. You click once, wait for Geralt to finish his attack combo, and then click once again at the right time to chain the next level attack. You start with 3 levels which cycle, and can upgrade to 5 levels.

I actually bounced off of Arkham Asylum & Arkham City because I thought the combat was button-mashing, and didn't like it at all. I'm glad it gave them another chance, because after I found out I had to click once, wait...and click again at the right time--and also that like The Witcher: Enhanced Edition the combat is rather complex if you take the time to learn, I ended up having the best gaming experience I'd had in a long time.

Many people never give games a second chance, though.

I still have yet to play The Witcher 3 despite being a huge fan of the series (still think OG Witcher is the best game in the series... so far) because I want to enjoy it maxed out at a locked 144hz, Witcher 3 deservers that imo. Whenever I get my hands on a 3090 that will be one of the first games I play, wonder if the ray traced update will be out by then...

I always love seeing a fan of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition! I'm looking forward to my fifth playthrough after reading through the books.

I also have not played The Witcher 3 yet. I'm hoping it is a lot better than The Witcher 2--especially the combat.

I wouldn't waste money on a 3090. I'm going to be building a new system soon, and unless AMD does something mind-blowing to make me switch, I'm going with the 3080 20GB that is expected soon. The extra 4GB of the 3090 will be worthless for games, and it will only be ~10 - 15% faster, absolute max. It just  doesn't make sense. The 3080 20GB leaves more money for another upgrade in <= 2years.
