High Res of Above Picture

So I just got a DGL-4500 and DWA-160 wireless router and adapter, respectively, for my computer. The 2.4GHz works phenominal but the 5GHz is VERY dissapointing. While being only 10ft away from the router with 2 walls in between the signal strength according to Windows 7 is 2 out of 5 which is HORRIBLE considering the range. The speed is roughly 180Mbps but the transfers go around 5Mbps. My settings are listed above, as well as my antenna orientation. So I was wondering if it were my antenna orientation that would lead to this huge lack of signal and throughput. What do you guys think?

Thanks a bunch!~

I am using the DWA-xxx extreme N WIFI card in a computer upstairs......farthest point from my router , through many walls, in a closet and am getting full strength on the meter...

i have them pointing in all different directions..... Probably just lucky.

My AAE Wireless N goes through a 1ft thick concrete wall and a standard wooden wall, and I can connect at near full speed 200ft away. This may sound dumb, but are you using a wireless N receiver? If not, you're only getting a 2.4ghz signal from the 5ghz router.

i have my router set so that each antenna points in different direction, middle one straight up, left one left, right one to the right, and even have them in a kinda sweeping arc as well.  works fine for me.

yu use 5ghz? i went back to 2.4ghz and signal was 100% with 300mbps. i think 5ghz is just flawed or idk...

I think when running the router vertically like that the recommended setup is to have the antenna alternating directions.
As far as the 5Ghz not working we, you may have lots of 5Ghz noise in your area, causing the signal to be degraded.

What is the best way to position the antennas on my DIR series router for optimal performance? The following image illustrates the configuration of each DIR series router antenna on both recommended positions:

These positions will allow for optimal transmission to and reception from, your wireless clients.
This is from a D-link FAQ.  I would assume that the DGL would be the same

No matter what you do, 5Ghz wont carry through walls as well as something lower like 2.4Ghz.  The higher the frequency, the harder it is for the signal to penetrate objects.  It's just how electromagnetic waves work.  2.4Ghz is plenty of frequency for a 300Mbit signal.

Have you manually assigned the wireless side of router to fully saturate 802.11n? I know that this is possible with some routers under the 'advanced wireless config' properties tab. I've done it on my linksys router before and was blown away. Since then I've never settled for "BASIC -Auto Config".

Linksys by Cisco FTW! My next router purchase will be the Cisco CRS-3.

I see, but the screenshot you posted above is your basic wireless configuration setup page. Post one with the "advanced" tab open.

Did you try changing channels? Doing so may give you the clearest signal. After changing channels, click on the save settings button.

When ever making changes to a Wireless router, it should be done via Ethernet not Wirelessly. When changes are done Wirelessly, the wireless connection could be cut off after making a change, so I highly recommend configuring the Wireless router via Ethernet.

According to your properties page here, you have two conflicting items under Wireless Network Settings. If you are trying to enable 802.11N only, the 802.11 Band setting ought to be set at 5Ghz instead of 2.4Ghz as seen above. The 2.4Ghz band is for wireless G.

So set your configuration to use 5Ghz if you want the FULL N spec, and also under 'Transmission Rate' try adjusting that setting there to the highest Mbit/s possible instead of it being set at 'automatic'; Save your settings, then try it out and report back.

If you have no other access points nearby, channel selection wouldn't matter at all. If you *do* have other access points nearby, pick a channel that overlaps least with the others in the area, but use 40 MHz for your Channel Width.

Yes it does, use 40 MHz for your Channel Width, it is intended for high-throughput applications in the 5Ghz band.

Under 'Transmission Rate,' what are your Mbits/s options in that drop down menu?

Start at the highest Mbits/s setting, then drop it down a notch till a very good connection is established. Signal strength and transmission ought to be many times better than what you had initially on auto. Drop the that setting down one step at a time and test until you find a 'sweet spot'.

nvm it supporst it... just put speed to auto and it works again... signal is better, but still not as good as 2.4ghz (5.8ghz = 44%, 2.4ghz = 66%). speed for 2.4ghz is 300mbps and 5.8ghz is 240mbps

O.O FIXED?! well maybe, did another speed test and it increased my transfer speed by about 1 megabyte per second. pretty good!~ now maybe i can position my router better. about 1-2 5ft walls in between my router and my adapter.

*EDIT* hmm.. now my transfer speed according to windows is varying any where from 240mbps-300mbps.. signal strength from 44%-50%. understandable though since 5ghz travels less easily through walls.

Ok if that's the case, put a check mark next to Enable Auto Channel Scan, but leave the Channel Width setting to 40Mhz. Then keep tweaking the Transmission Rate setting till you find what works best for you.
