Yep, yesterdays' updates caused 95% of all machines to freeze up at work..... I can't believe they don't wait 30 days for updating in a work environment but they don't , and paid the price .

1 hour plus waits to log in , random disconnects , freezing, crashing .... what a nightmare.

Microsoft and Sophos have identified an issue on devices with Sophos Endpoint Protection installed and managed by either Sophos Central or Sophos Enterprise Console (SEC) that may cause the system to freeze or hang upon restart after installing this update.

Hide updates in Windows 10

1. Turn on "Metered Connection"* in the Properties of your network adapter to prevent auto-downloading/installing of most all updates (There's only been a few that have snuck by on me though due to Micro$oft probably thinking they're that important to not be detected by the Show or Hide Updates tool used below.)
2. Turn off "Automatically download updates, even over metered data connections" in the Advanced options in Windows Update
3. Download the Show or Hide Updates tool from Micro$oft
4. Put the Show or Hide Updates tool on your root drive (C: or whatever) or a location of your choice
5. Run the Show or Hide Updates tool periodically to check for Windows Updates and to hide (or show previously hidden updates) the one's you want to be hidden from the normal Windows Update
6. Then run the normal Windows Update to install updates that you have not hidden with the Show or Hide Updates tool

That should stop (hide) most all updates and allow you to install only updates that you have not hidden..You can (like I did) hide KB4493509 that's causing some problems, and so it won't reinstall if you uninstall it.

If you want to run the Show or Hide Updates tool automatically on a schedule (such as daily, weekly, user logon, etc.) to check for Windows Updates, create a basic task for wushowhide in the Task Scheduler Library of Windows Task Scheduler, and checkmark to Run with highest privileges in the wushowhide task Properties.

Hiding updates is also good for hiding new drivers (such as a new Graphics Driver)
that Windows would install, allowing you to keep using an older driver version.

*A metered connection is an Internet connection that has a data limit associated with it. Cellular data connections are set as metered by default. Wi-Fi and Ethernet network connections can be set to metered but aren't by default. Some apps might work differently on a metered connection to help reduce your data usage. Also, some (most all) updates for Windows won't be installed automatically.

I don't know.  I've never had any update issue's prior to this.  Even this latest cumulative update from this week failed.  All other updates installed fine.  The error code I get for both those failed updates are the same.  I tried every fix I could think of and all the fixes I found online without success.

Next step is to use the media creation tool and follow the upgrade path with saving personal files & apps.  I'm not to worried about it at the moment with 1903 coming out this month.  I'll be doing a clean install of that version anyway.

I tried using the media creation tool to reinstall Windows while saving my files and apps.  It failed also.  Something got jazzed up so I did clean install of 1809 again.  Not sure what changed on my system. I did a fresh OS install of 1809 when it first released and never had any issue's with any updates until last week.

Oh well, almost got everything back to normal again now...

Just to clear things up a bit, other than those cumulative updates failing, I was not having any other issue's.  I've been using Macrium for a few years now and did have a system image from 10 days ago.  Whatever was causing those two updates to fail was also in my latest backup...

Cumulative Update KB4497934 for Windows 10 1809 and 1803 · Starting with this update released today adds the ability to users the choice to download and install feature updates such as 1903 May Update when they are made available so the user can defer the feature update (Edit: for up to 35 days) but still get other updates. And of course they slipped in a long list of "Addresses an issue".

Re: Windows Updates successes and/or problems thread 2019/05/22 08:19:34 (permalink)
Did the upgrade to 1903 on my desktop.  After I finished...used DDU to uninstall Nvidia drivers and reinstalled 430.64 on reboot.  Also reinstalled chipset drivers.  Seemed to work pretty smoothly.  Only caviat...had to re-assign drive letters to all my USB drives and external HDD's.  Also, still no Windows control over screen brightness.  Other than that...seems OK. Will post if anything goes awry...

With the screen brightness issue I would be wary of upgrading a laptop.  No control over brightness on battery or power, even with 1809...so I am keeping 1803 on my MSI PE-70.  Also, 1809 caused issues with a program that I use for music scheduling for my client stations.  Can't imagine 1903 would be any better.

One more thought.  Before I did the upgrade...saved my settings for O & O Shutup Tool.  After the upgrade....all settings were wiped out.  Imported my settings...rebooted and everything is as I set it up...GREAT tool!
