This has to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen. The new BSoD gives you pretty much zero information. Good job Microsoft.

If I hadn't seen that "smiley" BSOD myself firsthand I wouldn't guessed it was a photoshop job by someone trying to poke fun at Microsoft
Yeah even Apple stopped using the sad mac icons with the newest version of it's OS now it just shows a power button:

Oh and notice how macs are more multi language friendly I guess since message is printed in several languages instead of just english

The new BSoD gives you pretty much zero information. Good job Microsoft.
Well in defense of most people, that information is useless to anyone that isn't a technician or engineer or DIY enthusiast that would know.  This new thing can ease tension with a more politically correct version for non-technical folks.  Remember, these OS' are not designed for an elite enthusiast group of people, they are meant for everyone.

Besides I can see the marketing guys thinking that the regular BSOD has been around since Win95 and they want to break the shell from that old style of having a problem as if Win 8 wasn't really new looking everywhere at once; this route seems to follow that kind of logic.

Not saying it is a good idea or bad idea, but you guys have to stop this thinking that if something isn't 'for you' then it is 'against you'.

this is pure FUD. It still gives the error like DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL whereas apple gives nothing. At least you can troubleshoot...

If it allows you to boot back into Windows 7 then return any overclocking (CPU or GPU) back to default. Change the Windows 7 driver to a VGA driver. then start the upgrade again.

The old BSoD has worked fine for 17 years. I don't care how you look at it, providing the end user with less information is a bad thing.

I'm not having a issue with windows 8 as I am still on 7. I am just talking about how dumb I think the new BSoD is. Thanks anyways.

picture of an xp BSOD: http://www.krebsonsecurit...10/02/bsod-300x175.jpg

the only real technical info I see is the PAGE_FAULT error as well as the STOP stuff.

the main error still gets shown. memory dumps are also temporarily stored on the hard drive.

    what's different?

No stop codes so now you have to go find a program to dig into the dumps to find the bug check codes.

Or you could actually follow the instructions *GASP* and search for the bug code http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.php#0x9c

This is not new, either, but showed up in the developer preview nearly a year ago.

If the screen doesn't just 'flash' at you for 1 second with a BSOD message and instantly reboots  to repeat it again and again.  Rather, it gives you the opportunity to 'write it down' it is a winner method in comparison to previous versions of Windows.   I am definitely happy with this BSOD update.

Yeah other than the childish smiley it actually works better because when you reboot into windows it actually saves all the stop information so you can send the report to microsoft or look up the error yourself. At least that's what I remember seeing when Windows server 2012 crashed on me. Should be same for Win8 I think.

I've honestly never had any use for STOP codes. Typically with BSODs, the main error was all that I needed to find out what was happening.

yep page fault error is bad memory, irq not less or equal is a bad driver, memory dump is bad ram, bad HD, or bad windows install

The problem with the new BSOD screen is it does not show you what is wrong entire without the dump file.

I disable virtual memory for performance reasons. I don't get a dump as a result. I rely on disabling automatic restart and having the BSOD screen for feedback.

Yup just noticed this the other day since my SSD is already down to 3GB of free space after installing all my essential apps i.e. office, visual studio, etc. , I had to disable my swap and hibernation files which were eating up 20GB by the way!
So no changes from Win7 from what I can tell
One positive change I did notice over Win7is that Win8 now seems to be smarter about creating the default page file.
In win7 it usually hogged up like 1.5x your installed ram so my pagefile in win7 was like 12GB alone!. In Win8 is seems to default to like half of that since Win8 created a 5GB pagefile for me

The new screen is designed for the computer users that only know how to google something up, which was a nice move by Microsoft. On the old screen the user didn't know what data or codes to even search for.

The thinking was, if an enthusiast or techie got such an error and is knowledgeable enough on how to use the codes, then they also are smart enough to realize there's a dump/crashlog file on the C: drive with all the info inside it. Or, they can simply enter the event viewer and view all the hex codes and other details that way.

I am glad that the BSOD looks more user friendly but it stills offers absolutely no information for the average user.
