Just when I leave my system for a long period of time when I come back the only way to get any response from it is to crtl-alt-del. I already went into the power options and disabled the auto standby and USB crap. It is not auto standby, the mouse will move across the screen and the keyboard responds to numlock and all that. Is there some option I am missing?

It's no big deal or anything. Must be some driver causing it. It is just annoying. I fold so this puppy is on 24/7.

I turned off sleep mode because I could never get it to work right but I think that is because of some third party hardware.

I have one thing to add.

I setup my PC with 2 Hard Dives.  One SATA with no data, to install Windows on.  The Other Sata had files from my old pc.  I don't remember the exact error message, but Windows refused to install on the blank drive.  When I unplugged the secondary drive, windows installed without issues.

Re:Windows 7 Installation Guide 2010/04/30 22:15:46 (permalink)
Thanks for this great guide. Unfortunately for me, I am stuck in the full administrator rights The section. I installed 7 exactly as you directed. Then I proceeded to deal with the administrator account items. I did all the steps through the re-boot. When I tried to delete the use folder that 7 created during the install I get an error saying "The action can't be completed because the folder or file in it is open in another program". For the Public folder, I get "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder."

I did not do or open anything else. I followed the steps to the letter. I tried to switch users but the Administrator account [which I renamed [to Bill] per instructions] is the only choice. The 3rd folder I see in Users is named Administrator - not the name I changed it to.

If I right click that folder and go to Properties - Security - Advanced, I see that SYSTEM, Administrators and the administrator account that I renamed [to Bill] all have Full Control. Only Home Users have "Special"

What did I do wrong ?

On another note, I tried fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify again and got a 0 back this time so it looks like Trim is enabled. But when i go to defrag, 9 says only drives that require defrag will be listed. Well my SSD [C:\} is listed. Its not grayed out or anything. So now I am concerned that 7 is not recognizing the SSD properly.

Thanks in advance.

so far as the ssd's never had a problem with them before. there are some other posts here regarding win7 and ssd's.

I have not tested this yet,but word has it that you can only change to full admin rights in professional and ultimate.

I can say that there should be a folder named public and admin under c: the admin is your login and public is public/general. you did disable guest account and activate the admin account? also did you delete the account created durning install? Its hard to troubleshoot a PC that im not infront of but I will do my best.

Re:Windows 7 Installation Guide 2010/06/02 15:35:21 (permalink)
thanks for this execptionla guide but i have some questions:

NOTE: as mentioned before, regarding the registry, windows 7’s registry and kernel files are written differently then that of prior operating systems. With that said never, and I repeat never use and kind of registry clean program

ok so i cannot use any registry cleaners??
what about ccleaner??? is this safe to use??
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

this ccleaner has like 2 options for cleaning.
1. it cleans the internet temporary files, the recycle bin and other temprary files.
2. i think the 2nd one if for cleaning the registry
3. removes programs from from uninstall or change a program.
so i can still use the 1 option to clean temprary files or things like that?
is the registry cleaning option safe?? or should i not use it??

also about the "real" admin account. is it really necessary to delete the admin account and then make another admin account which supposely is te real one with full rights??
one more thing: when i get into windows i should install the anti-virus first?? or the drivers from the chipset and nividia drivers??
because for the anti-virus i need to use the internet because i have nod32 4.
thanks for the help and that great guide.

Re:Windows 7 Installation Guide 2010/06/05 19:10:40 (permalink)
your free to use any software of your choice, but keep in mind that there is really no registry cleaner. a registry cleaner is a program that bypasses files/folders therefore giving the impression of cleaning it. most people know there really bs however most people also know that when you uninstall a program there are always files left behind on the hdd and registry. hence why people still use them. i suppose its pure preference but there is plenty of documentation to be found to put the cleaners to rest. on another note they offer a cleaner option for other things such as temp internet, recycle ect. which is nice but can all be done through windows manually to avoid even using these programs. they are smoke and mirrors.

so far as the admin account, it is preference also. its like a server. you have user, admin and super admin which surpass all. i like to own my computer and not have it own me, so i run the super admin or the real admin. again pure preference.

so far as the programs first then antivirus. its up to you. the guide was written as i like to do my installation of windows. keep in mind i have never had a issue doing otherwise, besides having the lan connected and relieved drivers that are unwanted, but can still be fixed. my guide is a good source for others to follow for a clean install, and thats what its really all about. a clean install can make or break a systems performance.

Thanks! great guide! I'll tell you what worked for me and what didn't. First off changing the number of cores to the highest in the advanced boot settings worked out really well. The guide was a bit hard to read due to its organization, but it's bearable. I would have added things into a list form. But I can imagine how large the text would become.  Good stuff though!

Hey JR.... another THANK YOU for the guide.

I'm about to reinstall Win7 for the first time, and this will really come in handy.
You know you're getting older when you just do the basic "install" and don't immediately start tweaking the OS.

Your guide will really come in handy.

never ran into a problem with mupltiple stat hdd's, will research this some more.

IF YOU FIND THIS GUIDE HELPFUL Please ask that it be STICKEYed or a BLUE RIBBON - Thank you

The problem that occurs with multiple HDDs installed, (and this seems to be a system by system problem/or not).  The Win7 installer plays what I call "Hide the BootRecord" (bootrec).  In an optimal install, this section of the OS would reside on the exact same HDD that windows installs to.  Unfortunately, Windows 7 install doesn't always "act" optimal, and places  "Bootrec" on any available HDD it chooses.

This does not normally create a problem, but there are plenty of cases where it does.  Reformatting a storage drive that you believe is only storage, and Windows7 had decided to put the Bootrec on this drive will cause Windows to fail to boot.  Removing a drive that contains the BootRec, again failure to boot...  The bigger problem, is that if Win7 cannot find the Bootrec, you also cannot do a "repair" to the installation of Win7, from the DVD.  I could go on, but many a failed boot has been fixed by a reinstall of Win7, disconnecting any HDD that is not involved with the OS install.  This will ensure that the BootRecord is placed on the proper drive, with the OS.

I always advise to disconnect any HDD that is not being used for the install, and then install those drives, after Windows7 is up and running.  It usually ensures a trouble free installation.

I fully agree. I found this out the hard way when first setting up RAID with W7 and leaving my backup drive in. It wouldn't show up in windows and I thought everything on it had been lost. Reformatting again and plugging it in afterward fixed it.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that I've been using CCleaner registry cleaner for over a year now with no problems. "Missing share DLLs":"Missing file extensions":"Type libraries":"Fonts":"and "Help files" are unchecked in the settings though.
