I write this but, I am not completely sure. I do not believe the X99 has an M.2 slot.

Does it support NVMe? Also, what PCI-E generation does the M.2 slot support? (When trying to use a M.2 SSD, I want to know the speed limit for R/W)

Cool GTX X99 M.2 Getting it to work **STEP BY STEP** - EVGA Forums for best speed on the X99 ... a PCIe card would probably be faster ...
I'm using the X99 CLASSIFIED. I wanted to know the generation of this M.2 port to know if it can handle higher speed NVMe SSDs. Do the same speeds and limitations to Micro apply to the Classified model?

Your not going to get M.2 PCIe Gen 4 speeds in Any X99 MB .... memory says PCIe Gen 2 for your M.2 ... still looking for documentation to confirm I decided on the - Intel 750 Series drive in my X99 Classy - faster than the M.2 on the MB Intel 750 Series AIC 400GB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDPEDMW400G4X1 EDIT: found answer in this thread: X99 Classified M.2 Speeds - in post #2 "The M.2 socket on the X99 Classified is seviced via the PCH with 4 lanes Gen 2 PCI Express. Therefore your M.2 speeds will not be as fast as 4 lanes Gen 3 PCI Express."

Going by my memory, I had a Samsung 265gb PM981, it is the OEM ver of the 980 or 970EVO?I bought used off ebay. I was getting very close to the speed it was rated for. I think I have just reg SSDs in my Classifieds now but I think I still have a NVME in my X99FTW I have 16+ computers all over the house ready to run and I move parts around often My X99 classy is not my main rig anymore just folding and BOINC, (no mining) took the NVME out Have to search around and see what is where... I believe the FTW and Classy have the same M.2 parts. I'll pull the cover and if it is in there I'll run a speed test Maybe if I can throw a MVME in one of the Classys and test I do remember though I was getting full speed or very close to it, with the PM981 if you want to look up those specs The Mp981 is PCIE3

I've been using a Kingston Sata SSD on my X99 CLASSIFIED but the system is freezing sometimes (only unfreezing when opening the task manager) and it's driving me crazy. Tested all the ram sticks and no issues with them.

Can a PCI Express SSD be connected into a PCI-E x8 slot? Since they're larger than X4 and don't have a physical limit to indicate the X4 connection on them, I decided to ask to make sure that it will work.

Yes, it can be installed in any slot that is bigger, even a 16x PCIe slot can be used. You should get a "PCIe to M.2" card for your X99 board (since the M.2 slot is only GEN2). I have a "Samsung 980 PRO" in a 16x slot, and i get ~3500/3400 read and write on my X99 Classified:

I thought that the X4 was the only one that would accept it because it has the exact size of the PCI-E SSD connector. SuperConker it is best to use a "PCIe to M.2" card on X99 boards
Yeah, sadly X99 CLASSIFIED has a really limited M.2 slot. Sharing signal and stuff, really a shame but probably a technological limitation at the time it was released. SuperConker I have a "Samsung 980 PRO" in the 16x slot, and i get ~3500/3400 read and write on my X99 Classified.
Unfortunately, almost everything here in Brazil has a mountain of taxes applied over them so, even though 980 PRO would be an incredible option, I think I'm going to take AORUS RGB AIC NVMe SSD. Thank you everyone for your help!

Which PCI-E to M.2 card are you using? Can you give me a link to where to buy it?

If you are looking for inexpensive one I've (briefly) used Vantec UGT-M2PC100 in my X299 Dark with success.

Thanks for the information, mate. I noticed that none of these SSD brands make PCI-E to M.2 adapters so I don't know which one is reliable.

You are welcome :) None of the SSD manufacturers make adapters because they are in business of making drives, just like hard drive manufacturers usually aren't in business of making adapters/connectors/cables for hard drives they make. On top of that M.2 to PCI-E adapters are a niche market so big companies don't have interest in dealing with that and in turn it is next to impossible to figure out which one out of gazzillion of small(er), often unknown, players can be trusted as reliable. So please notice even though my brief basic experience with Vantec didn't show any issues that isn't a guarantee of anything. I have also used IcyDock's adapter with success but that one is (more) expensive and once again that isn't a guarantee of anything. On the positive side it is my understanding NVMe to PCI-e interfaces are pretty simple and straightforward affair so there should be (in theory) less chance of "lesser" ones malfunctioning. Good luck!

I have a sabrent one that works fine and is full length so it locks in if you're worried about it falling out. (EC-PCIE) but any should work fine, really.

Hey, everyone. Just an update. I decided to buy an SSD Gigabyte Aorus RGB AIC 512 GB. It has NVMe, 3GB/s read and 2GB/s write. The RGB software sucks, but the performance is great. I'm really happy with it and I plan to keep my EVGA X99 CLASSIFIED for the longest possible. Thank you for answering my questions and see you around!
