Not sure if this belongs in General Discussion or General Hardware... Sorry.

I've got a old motherboard in one of my old builds, selling it along with my old processor and ram.
Is there anything I need to do to prepare the old motherboard for sale?
Isn't the Windows Key on the BIOS chip? When I took apart that computer I went and used the Windows key on that computer on my current build.
I won't run into any issues in the future will I?
Person i'm selling it to has their own Windows key of course.

Blow off the dust ,clean of any TIM if it has some on it. Put the socket cover on it, if removing the CPU. Include accessories that came with it. Try and be a bit patient for it to sell. GL!

I will ASSume he is using win 7 since it is listed in the ops signature.
But, if it was win 10, the windows key stays with the board, when reinstalling win 10 you do not have to enter the key to activate windows if win10 was on that board before. Digital activation
Win8 and older you do have to enter the key every time you install windows.
OP did not say what version of windows it was for sure. He may have forgotten to update his signature.

Im selling it to a friend he's using windows 10 as well, he'll have his own key, but that's what I thought too, The Key should be stored on the motherboard, hence why I don't need to reactivate windows when I reinstall my system or replace the drives.
But if they install windows and put in a different code it should be fine right?

Same here - make it look as clean as possible and send stuff that may have come with it.

If he puts his key in at the beginning it should void the key locked to the board.
The key is not in the bios, it is in MS server. Every device on the internet had its own number. (MAC) I think it is called.
I wonder if MS locks the OS to that and stores that info in their server data bank.
If there were an issue, worse comes to worst you may have to call MS and they can get it to activate.

Correct again - every network device has its own unique MAC address - I have hundreds of IP cameras where I work (surveillance) and every IP camera and recorder has a MAC address.
The one thing your friend will not be able to do is put his Hard drive on the mobo you sell him and just start gaming or anything. The hard drive will need to be installed with your mother board - no big deal. It should work out fine IMO

When selling just the motherboard by itself always make sure you clear the CMOS and update the board to the latest BIOS. You'll be happier for it as the buyer won't run the risk of boot problems due to a bad leftover RAM config or attempting to use a newer CPU on an older unsupported BIOS.

If it's shipping with the same CPU/RAM installed then it doesn't matter so much though!

One other thing to check.  Make sure to check the CPU socket to see that there are no bent pins.  Take a photo...blow it up in size if you have to.  Last thing you want is the board to be returned because you may have bent pins taking the cpu out.

when I tried to sell one of my old board some buyer wanted me to reinstall it in my system and screen shot that it boots up. told him sorry not tearing apart my new rig. so from now on I take screen shots of computer running and run benchmarks before I take apart computer.
