I am sure there is more then 1 reason. Is it really that much of a hassle to log in to download it? Perhaps it gives them a better idea how many people download and use their software. The idea behind "required registration & login"  to access certain items, has been around since I can remember, and it does have it's benefits. The software is freely available.......but if it's that much hassle to register and create an account for you, perhaps try other software Not to be rude or a stickler man, but all the fuss over such a trivial matter? and to create a thread like this? cmon man, it doesn't hurt anybody to login. Have your browser save & remember your username & password, and it's adds maybe 2 seconds to the process.

You can use the steam version  - which is just a log in of another kind  ( Valve )  so not really much different but ....

I, myself, long for the days of just being able to download ..and not having my every (redacted) move tracked...
 
 
If you don't have the hardware, the software is pretty useless..
