Early on in my computer build, I was getting a lot of freezing issues...where the computer would just randomly freeze, sometimes rebooting on its own...sometimes just remaining frozen until I did a hard shutdown. I had several very nice people try to help me figure out the cause. I switched out just about every component or tested them...all to no avail. But there was one thing I didn't realize to be an issue. It was the vertical mount. As a "last resort", I took my GPU off of the vertical mount and inserted it directly into the motherboard....and didn't have the issue again. Those on here surmise that it was an issue with the cable. I sometimes fell like I'd like to use the vertical mount again, but if I do, I would need a new cable, so my question is, does anyone have any info on a QUALITY cable that can handle this generation of GPU?

It can be done, as I have a few running on riser cables. When I get the time, I'll look for more information of the ones I'm using; I have several brands & lengths NOTE: Every Riser Mfg & horizontal bracket Mfg - Is NOT on the Same page for mounting hole locations - for the Riser to bracket interface. - I have no idea why this is not standardized, I just know from experience that it is Not Standardized LIAN LI PCIe 4.0 x16 Risers have not caused me any issues. I have both the 200mm & 600mm Riser in use with EVGA 3080Ti FTW3 Ultra, with OC & no issues - PW-PCI-420 = 200mm - PW-PCI-4-60X = 600mm My Rules of Risers / best practices for Riser Cables1) - avoid sharp bends - this is a best practice (use something round to create the curve, a sharpie is handy ) 2) - get ones that lock to the GPU & MB - this is a best practice 3) - buy the rated PCIe speed you need - less likely to cause issues 4) - buy from a supplier with a friendly return policy; because, bad riser cables can happen

Both of my builds use LinkUp Technology PCIe 4.0 riser cables in both of my builds (EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra & ASUS 4090 TUF OC) without any issues but they aren't cheap.

I recommend though going with quality over going cheap when it comes to vertical mount cables.

Keep in mind thinner cables are more likely to have problems then thicker but you are right that they do flex easier. Mostly the biggest risk is less insolation around the wires as well as an increased risk of the cable breaking inside and shorting out.

Hello RAVEN, If you don't feel like waiting for new stock on LINKUP (which on the other hand i recommend as the other people above, proven good riser cables), Lian Li, CableMod and EZDIY-FAB all makes Gen4 risers which i all would trust and recommend.

So, I ended up finding a LINKUP cable for the GPU on Amazon and it is being shipped to me. My serious question is,.....will there be a noticeable downside to mounting vertically, using this cable? It is the 4.0, but some suggest higher latency due to the use of a longer cable, rather than the GPU being plugged right into the motherboard. And that it may not cool as well in vertical. Thoughts?

Nope, it's extremely miniscule. And since none of the cards can even use the full bandwidth of PCIe 4.0, even that unnoticeable difference has no meaning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DKVVtirNM8&ab_channel=GamersNexus <- will explain this in detail and with testing, there are probably more videos on the topic even, bit this is the one i remembered for now. Ohh yeah and about the cooling, it will solely depend on how much space there is left between the sidepanel/glass and the graphics card fans. For that exact reason i like EZDIY-FAB's vertical mounting, which has a mechanism to allow you to angle it from 0 to 45 degrees, giving those fans extra space and not looking too bad in the end either.

The mount I originally purchased was a Cooler Master V2....which apparently is PCI3 3 cable. That could have been why my system was constantly freezing. I hope the PCIe 4 cable will work.

Just curious, have you tried that 3.0 cable with forcing Gen3 in your BIOS aswell? It proved to solve it for folks in the past, not that i think it's a great bandaid.

No, I didn't do that in BIOS. Honestly, didn't know that was a thing. I'm going to assume this LINKUP 4 cable will not be problematic, though.

So,...the reason I stopped using the vertical mount is because I was experiencing random system freezes...reboots...having to do a hard shutdown [because the system was frozen]. When I plugged the GPU straight into the motherboard, I had no further issues. Are you saying that the PCIe 4.0 cable might still cause this problem?

Oh hi Raven, I might have misunderstood , I was only saying that either cable should run a 3080/90 just fine , as far as performance, I have tested both Coolermaster and LinkUp cables in 3.0 and 4.0 and they ran the same and would post the same numbers in testing like a Port Royal run , I Thought you were trying to get more performance out of one of them, Ya if it works in the slot and the riser cable is causing issues , try another for sure

I was assuming the first cable to be the cause of the freezing...and hoping the LINKUP cable will allow it to work properly in vertical setup. But I do appreciate your input on the differences.

So,...I saw some reviews of the Linkup cable and some people were saying that it wasn't actually running a 4.0 speeds, bottlenecks, and PC crashing and freezing issues using the cable. I'd still like to get a cable for vertical mount, but after my previous issues, I'm worried about even this cable. Now, it could be that some people did something wrong. What is your opinion? Oh,...I did have another question about using these types of cables. Is there anything I have to do in BIOS or elsewhere when using one?

If it's a GEN4 cable then no. If it was GEN3, you would probably have to set the PCIe slot in BIOS to GEN3.
