Hello!
So I am just curious to know more on how Nvidia Boost 3.0 works. My 1080ti SC2 boosts out of the box, no overclock to 1936mhz, sometimes 1960smhz. In EVGA precision I get this number every time I hit K boost.
In game the boost varies, even if I run a game with K boost on it changes. Most demanding games (e.g. GR wildlands and Witcher III start at 1936mhz then decrease the boost to 1898mhz). The moment I quit the game EVGA precision shows the clock going back to 1936.
I am not complaining at all, it's already about 300mhz higher than the advertised clock with no overclocking, I'm just curious to know why this happens and if you think this might affect performance?
Thanks!

It helps performance. Gpu boost determines if the video card can boost, and if it can how high within safe voltage and safe temperatures. Once it hits the safe voltage and temperature it likes, the speed slightly fluctuates to make sure the card doesn’t overburden itself.

If you run the fans higher, the clocks will stay higher. The cooler the card stays, the higher it will usually boost consistently.

Ah that’s great makes sense. At 1898mhz / full load I get temps between 68-70, i’li try with a more aggressive fan curve to see if the boost itself will push further, thanks for the explanation!

Funny thing I fiddled around +120 power 90temp, priority temp, k boost and fan at 100%, I got 1924mhx stable in game but FPS are still better with just default + auto fan, with boost maxing out at 1898mhz! I guess Nvidia (and EVGA) know their stuff, I am impressed by how well this works completely automatically!

You'd probably have better performance disabling KBoost. You should be able to hit a steady 2ghz just using offsets for core clocks. Most folks can hit +300 offset (600mhz effective) on the memory without issues. I've not used KBoost beyond experimenting with it and have never been able to hit bench scores as high using it. It almost seems like a feature EVGA invented just to mollify users complaining about GPU Boost 'gimping' performance.  Lastly, why waste the energy running your clocks at full speed all the time? As you said, Boost 3.0 works pretty well. KBoost, more or less disables Boost 3.0.

It doesn't disable gpu boost. If it truly disabled gpu boost your gpu clock wouldn't move at all even at higher temps.

    Thanks both, makes sense.
I tried increasing the offset (power target 120, temp 90 with priority, gpu offset +100, mem +100) but unavoidably gr wild lands crashes, haven’t tried other games so far, will experiment better
