I just built my first new rig in a long, long while after switching to Mac.

I'm currently using a Supernova G5 750W with a 2060 Black GPU installed, but am planning to step up to the 3080 FTW3 Ultra (already in the queue).

After reading about the OC BIOS' higher power draw, I want to return my 750 and get an 850W G5. My question is, can I simply keep my existing cables in place, hooked up to the motherboard and GPU, and simply swap out the PSU itself? Everything looks identical other than wattage, but I want to be sure it won't cause any problems or fry anything.

I appreciate any feedback!

In this case the cables inside the PC can remain the same but I always replace the cable from the wall to the system. They should be the same cables inside the case for 750w as the 850w for the G5 but because of wear it’s always best to change cables out of you can.

Thanks for the feedback! It'll be a pain, but I suppose it's worth it to swap out the cables while I'm at it. Anticipating the 3080 FTW install, would there be any problem with going ahead and connecting the additional GPU cables to the PSU and just keeping them in the shroud until I get the new card installed?

You can use the same modular cables if you want to, they are compatible as far as that goes.

The wall cable for 850W units is a little thicker (16 gauge) and rated higher than 750W (18 gauge) units..So you should use the wall cable that comes with the 850..The lower the AWG number, the thicker the wire.

See Which EVGA Modular Cables are compatible with my PSU? and What is the rating for my PSU wall cable? in the EVGA FAQs.
