I am new to folding, Last month was my first month.  I noticed my two 970's making the awfull whine noise a few days ago and am noticing that I am getting core 15 after core 15 and not really earning much for them.

Is this happening to everyone?  What is the Advanced method?  It is not worth the burn on my computer to continue to run these cores non stop.

Yea gtx 970/980 have been getting a lot of core15's again. That whining is simply coil whine and isn't harmful at all, just a little annoying. These core15 units will stress the hardware much more then almost anything else you can possibly run on a gpu. They are older work units that do not have bonus points for early completion and that is why they have low points. They still do valuable science however.

As far as advanced method switch, this link contains pretty much all you need to know about it, how to set it up and other little settings like it.

Re: Upgraded Maxwell support for Core17 NOT Core 18 2014/11/03 10:22:43 (permalink)
complex questions touching on many topics.

So, in no particular order.

1. Coil whine indicates that you are pushing the vrm on your card.
Sometimes it dissipates with time (break in period) sometimes it can be alleviated by reducing your OC...or when running a 24/7/365 program like folding actually under-clocking.
While annoying, and an indication of high load, it usually does not cause any damage/indicate a malfunction.
If it occurs when gaming and is a real annoyance, most companies will however consider it cause for an RMA

2.What is the Advanced method?

PG has a process for rolling out their WU. They test internally, then allow limited beta testing and finally roll out to everyone. Sometimes WU fall between beta and roll out due to excessive requirements (CPU cycles, memory requirements, large upload or download bandwidth, etc. etc.) and are considered "advanced method"
you can select to receive the type of WU you want by setting flags. BETA OR advanced method.

3.I am getting core 15 after core 15 and not really earning much for them.
Is this happening to everyone?  What is the Advanced method?  It is not worth the burn on my computer to continue to run these cores non stop.

PG prioritizes their science investigation over software support. Consequently, there is often a lag (months to years) between new hardware architecture(Maxwell), drivers(Nvidia), software(Open cl Open MM) and optimized projects using that software to investigate science(FOLDING CORES)

The irony is that very poorly optimized software can cause very heavy loads on just one part of a general purpose gpu. Since the compute functions of a GPU are designed to support the overall GPU (gaming..etc) they are not really designed to run flat out 24/7/365 without pause. This is what you are seeing with core 15. It does a small amount of science, but puts a very heavy load on one specific function of the card. (like running one cylinder of an v8 at 10, 000 rpm rather than the entire engine at 1250rpm)

So, the old WU(core15), that under-utilizes the potential of the GPU...is currently the default.

In time( or in theory), you should see this type of high load WU moved to advanced instead of default.

Should you continue? Up to you. PG indicates that they want to complete the core 15 projects...although they have been universally unpopular...and they(PG) have refused to either update the software or the adjust the points to make them more palatable to donors.

Core 15 was after all never EOL. Back to mining until this gets resolved.

Why not run BOINC for now?
Mining is for Money Only.

In a way, sure it is. In another way, it's a lot more than that.

I'll just let my 5820k fold for now.

Like new and different technologies, investment. Being involved in something a lot bigger than what you may have initially thought of to be.

And yea, the money factor, it really isn't bad depending upon how much homework you've done. Try making $500-$1000 in a couple of hrs, again depending on how much you know.

What you're mentioning is something like volunteering, which isn't too bad if you have free electric, but not everyone is that lucky, plus you still get a lot more in return, aside from the main thing I.e. Experience.
