Hello all,

I recently had a friend who was interested in upgrading his machine to the fastest quad that was reasonable and I told him well the q9650 was the best possible with out going nuts on pricing (extreme edition)...

After talkingn to him he actually went out and purchased this processor without checking to see if his motherboard would support the q9650. Most of the forum posts I found said no, and that brings me to my reason behind this post.

We were successful in upgrading and his 680i to use the the 9650 at stock speeds with the latest BIOS provided on these forums. The board was a revision D so I dont know if this was actually the reason behind our results but in any case. I just wanted to share my experience with this board because I am sure there will be other people looking to see if there board will work with a 45nm quad core.

Can you please ask your friend for some of the bios settings. I just got a Q9550 and Im getting random BSOD after fresh Windows 7 install and I cant figure out what the problem is. I would really appreciate if you can get at least the voltage settings. This whole upgrade plus a 5850 was to play bc2 and its been like 3 days trying to figure out this problem. Thanks.

as far as the voltages for the motherboard we kept everything single voltage stock for example... If it was listed as auto and the actual next to it said 1.3 then we just changed that voltage to 1.3 so that they read the exact same thing. The voltage for the cpu was near 1.35 if I remember correctly

Next we made sure we turned off all of the spread spectrum and other settings that were irrelavant to disabled . I currently do not have the computer and he has it at work until 9 tonight.

I am still testing stability but using amenra151 and Cashh's tips I also was successful on getting q9650 working on the 680i, and also have it running at 3.6 ghz.

just thought i'd let everyone know. I finally got my new q9650 last night. All i did is plug it into my 680i SLI motherboard and everything worked fine, no tweaking. I decided to do a clean install to win7 64bit since i was changing it out. i ran that PC rig for 5+ hours straight with no issues. Haven't really pushed it yet by playing any games, perhaps tonight i will. I've never overclocked any settings on my 680i, so everything is at a default and worked fine. I'll probably end up overclocking it to around 3.5GHz when i'm done reinstalling everything and have time to research and play around with it. but at idle, the q9650 seems to be running at 7 to 10 degrees Cel. cooler than my old e6400.
i have a EVGA nForce 680i SLI (122-CK-NF68 version 2) with the latest p33 bios (upgraded that almost a year ago)

Because the 680i was designed before the new CPUs were released by Intel, and it's hit and miss whether they will work. Many people find they don't.

If EVGA said they supported them, hundreds of users would soon complain that they don't work.

I installed a Q9650 last night. Bios sees it fine and it passes POST, but when it tries to load the original OS (Vista 64) or if I try to install Win7 both at OS launch resets the system and it starts over. Any ideas?

hey I am trying to do something very similar I have q9550 and trying to get the board running but I cant get it to pass post I keep getting a 18 error which is either cpu or memory based on the codes in the manual. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might get it to pass that post number. I know its not supported but if you can get the 9650 going I think I should be able to get the 9550 going. I am willing to try about anything cause the hardware was free and I dont want to buy another motherboard

Do you rrackow and bryan have the P33 BIOS installed?
You will need to install that perferably with a older 65nm CPU to even have a slim chance of any of the Q9000 series CPU's even working.

Did you try resetting the CMOS, maybe even a full clear by unplugging the power supply and then removing the CMOS battery for 10 minutes then reinstall.
Remember if you remove the cmos battery you will need to reset any settings you had to change in BIOS like memory voltage and you'll also need to reset your system clock in BIOS.

Other then that as others have said it is hit or miss as to if it works as it is not supported.

After reading this topic and this one:
    http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=229808
I took the risk of upgrading my system to Q9650 as well. IT ALL WORKED OUT PERFECTLY! I've been running the system for the whole day, made stress tests, played games and watched videos - not a single error.

Welcome to the forums and glad it worked out for you. Guess you really are fate as you tested it.

By the way you do have a A1 board as EVGA does not recognize the A2. A2 was a label Foxxconn put on the boards after they had to do a minor revision to move a couple capacitors on the back of the board that aftermarket heatsink backplates were hitting.

    Continues good luck to you.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I just wanted to confirm that the Q9650 will work on a EVGA 122-CK-NF68-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI with the p33 bios.  Where do I get this bios, and is there a better one that will work since this was discovered?

Best video card/cards in SLI mode for this outdated combo?

i have this board.. and i just acquired a q9550 cpu.
ill be crossing my fingers and messing with this tonight.
    heres hoping..

i too want to know where this bios can be found. ill start scouring the boards and the net as soon as i get home.

as far as best sli, this is still a pci x16 board. it runs at x8 when you sli but im sure youve see nteh benchmarks arent too far off even with the x8. so just get whatever you want. i currently have a 470 but am selling it for a pair of 560s so i can do nvidia surround.

I've done quite a bit of research since my last post.  Here's the P33 bios which is the latest version:
    http://cdn.evga.com/bios/NF68_P33 dot bin (dot = ".")

With a Q9650 you should be able to do much better than my Q6600 B3.  I also have a Q6600 G0 that I'm going to try with the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme heat sink and Scythe Slip Stream SY1225SL12M 120mm fan to see if I can get 3.6 on air (quietly) 24/7 stable.  I also have a Noctua NF-S12B fan to try.  I've got two 260 GTX in SLI mode running off an antec HCG900 PS.

You can check your bios on the post screen.  or you can download cpu-z and it will tell you under the "mainboard" tab.  P33 is the latest, and can be downloaded here under "support".

Hmm...CPU-Z says i have a 122-CK-NF68 when all this time i thought i had 122-CK-NF63-TR. How accurate is CPU-Z in this regard?

    Heres a pic:

I dont see P33 bios in there so i guess its safe to say i dont have it?
I have the p33 bios bin saved to my desktop. How do i go about applying this without a floppy drive? Are there any winflash utilities i can use?

I have the p33 bios bin saved to my desktop. How do i go about applying this without a floppy drive? Are there any winflash utilities i can use?

Your CPU-Z lists the same version as I have on Rig 2 below ... a 750i FTW.  I had flashed the BIOS to a more recent version, but, still got this same 6.0PG ... maybe there are multiple releases within this same version series.

When I start the PC, the correct version I flashed to is displayed on the splash screen ... AIDA64 also provides the detailed version information, so, you might want to try it or some other such program.

As far as flashing, I'm pretty sure I burned the image on a CD-RW and set the PC BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD drive.  On checking the instructions I downloaded, there is a thumb drive option ... but, it appears there's a different file you might need to download.  Check the files for your specific board and you should find the instructions as well ...

    Hope this helps ...

    Alright, i got Aida64.

Still says 122-ck-nf68 but i guess thats what i have lol. For BIOS stuff i do see 691N0P33 so suffice to say, im on P33 and in the best shape to try a q9650?

As for applying the BIOS (if i wanted to reapply it for example) there arent any instructions on the page about how to do it. I just have a .bin file sittin there. Tried burning it as a bootable image to a CD, didnt work. Tried IMGburn and MagicISO. Neither can do it. The USB method is rather complicated but the more i think about it the more i think i remember doing it that way to update the BIOS last time i did it anyways. Bleh.

If you want to flash to the P33 just in case.  Because the P33 is dated 12/01/09 on evga's download page.  Just download the .iso from here:
    http://cdn.evga.com/bios/NF68_P33.iso

    Instructions.............
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    • Use a CD Burning software to burn the .iso image onto a blank CD (Nero, Alochol 120%, MagicISO etc.)
    • After it has burned, insert CD and restart the machine, go into the BIOS and load defaults, save and exit
    • Now set the CD Drive as the primary boot device, or press escape while the system is booting to select CD as the bootable device.
    • After flash remove the CD, and power off PC Completely.
    • Turn on the PC and load defaults in BIOS
