Hi, I want to dual boot win7 and kubuntu.
I downloaded LTS versions of Ubuntu and Kubuntu and used the latest version of unetboot to make a USB install.
I seem to do the install but when it reboots and I select start kubuntu I see a panic message preceeded by hardware errors, then it reboots itself.
I have installed dual boot before on my laptop without any problems.
Any suggestions ?

Update. I selected the option to boot from 1st hdd and I seem to be going round in a loop.
    error message reads:
    ----
[drm:drm_edid_block_valid] *ERROR* EDID checksum is invalid, remainder is 42
    nouveau 0000:0c:00.0: DVI-I-1: EDID block 0 invalid.

[drm] nouveau 0000:0c:00.0: No native mode, forcing panel scaling.

Is this relating to missing drivers for the graphics card ?

Add "nomodeset" (without the quotes) to the boot command. It is likely an issue with the video driver, video card, and monitor not working well together.

It looks like you may be running a NVIDIA card based on the reference to nouveau driver in the log.

You may try and run the native NVIDIA drivers instead. Take a look at the links here.

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia

    http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/ubuntu-quetzal-nvidia.html

In the event, that you are not able to find a way to get into X, you can run the installation commands in the second link in a shell instead. These commands install and setup the tools needed for compiling the driver, downloads the Linux kernel source code needed to compile the NVIDIA drivers, and then finally compiles the NVIDIA driver.

My apologies if this is post is in the wrong place.
    ---
Graphics card is EVGA Geforce GTX 470.
    ---
I have Kubuntu on a USB stick by using unetbootin with a fresh download of Kubuntu. USB is from the header on the motherboard passing to the front of the case, just for convenience.
    1 SSD installed with three partitions - 1 & 2 for win7 and 3rd is not formatted.
    Boot order USB first.
    ---
Unebootin pressents me with; default, help, start kubuntu, check disk for defects, test memory, boot from first had disk, start kubuntu and check disk for defects. Not sure why some of them appear twice.
    ----
Highlighting boot from first hard disk, then pressing tab gives; > /ubnkern initrd=/ubninit.
Adding nomodest starts the ball rolling with; loading /ubnkern then loading /ubninit.
After loads of stuff it pauses with; (initramfs) at about 8.1. Then we get the loop as mentioned in the first post.
Loop does not stop hence no console to do the things mentioned in the links kindly provided.
    CTRL+ALT+DEL reboots (i got bored around 130).
    ---
Just for fun I tried the first start kubuntu, then pressed tab; /casper/vmlinuz initrd=/casper/initrd.lz file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu.seed boot=casper maybe-ubiquity quiet splash --.
I added " nomodeset". Nothing appeared to happen, just a blinking underscore. I left it alone and eventually got a grey screen with kubuntu 12.04 and some dots.
Then just a grey screen. PC then rebooted itself.
    ---
For further amusement I pulled the USB stick to see what boot options I would now get.
It just boots straight to win7 login.
    ---
Many thanks to all that have already posted but still need a hand with this please.

Unless the kernel crashed, CTRL+ALT+F1 should get you to a shell where you can login and CTRL+ALT+F7 should get you back to the X-server. I am not entirely sure if your X-server is having a problem loading or if this is the result of a kernel crash due to a hardware issue.

Also, try to boot some other Linux distributions from USB and see if those work, try Lubuntu and Linuxmint.

    Just tried lubuntu-13.04-desktop-amd64.
Basically, Hardware errors, final line reads: kernal panic - not syncing: fatal machine check.
That message I had seen before, when I was trying to install ubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-amd64.

This particular error generally indicates a hardware failure detected by the CPU. There is the possibility of a kernel bug with a specific combination of hardware but since you are seeing this with different versions of Ubuntu that should have different kernel versions, I am leaning towards hardware issue. I would suggest doing some different hardware diagnostics including check all available temperature sensors, and if temperatures look normal, try CPU stress testing. If you are able to get into Windows, you can run CPU stress testing from there. You may also download Memtest86+ to check memory stability.

For testing, another thing you can try is a different Linux distribution. Slackware64 14.0 would be a good choice to test with. Download and boot with the ISO and see if you get the machine check exception error with the Slackware kernel.

I have downloaded and burnt to a cd memtest86 v4.20.
That is now running, doing what ever it does as default.
I will leave it running overnight.
    ----
I downloaded OCCT for fun earlier. My laptop lasts about 2mins lol. Ran it until I got bored with it on the sr-2.
BTW I have not adjusted anything other than boot order in the BIOS, i.e. not trying any over clocking at this time.
I want to get stuff up and running before that !

Ran memtest86+ v4.20 for walltime 13:06:00, five passes without error. So I am going to assume that the memory is working well.
    ---
    edit.
    running windows64,prime95,v27.9,build1 with 16 workers (i assume that means 16 cores ?).
    ---
    edit.
Well after 8hrs cpus are at 65 and 62 with both cpu fans speed to spare.
Honestly I don't think prime95 is taxing the system enough as ambient outside of the server cabinet containing the pc is 30.
Going to try OCCT to see if it stresses more.

One more that I would recommend trying is http://tinycorelinux.net/5.x/x86/release/CorePlus-current.iso as it can sometimes work on hardware that other Linux distributions have trouble with. It still seems unusual that Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Lubuntu wouldn't boot on the SR-2. It looks almost like this my be a hardware issue with your video card, or a hardware issue with the board at this point.

54mins of OCCT and everything appears to be fine, temps 64 and 60.
Going to try coreplus-current from the link provided, purely because it finished downloading before slackware64-14.0.
    ---
selected default from the list of unetbootin and pressed tab.

    ---
    loading /ubnkern
    loading /ubninit
    decompressing linux... parsing elf... done.
    booting the kernal.
    ---
    lots of colourful writing !
    core appears to have installed
    I can open a terminal.
    ---
I am not sure what to do now. I guess I should readup on what coreplus is.
Would it be possible to use core to install kubuntu ? I mean if I make sure the drivers I need are present in core can I use them to make a working install of kubuntu ?
Can I use core to try and work out why kubuntu was throwing a fit ?
    ---
    edit
aha I need to run the tc_install app to actually install coreplus/tc. It nearly caught me out too! sda1 sda2 sdb1 available but ls /mnt/sda1 or 2 gave me nothing.
Good job I remembered that I left an unformatted partition for 'nix as I nearly used sda2. doh!
Popped back into windows before starting the install and formated where I want 'nix to be as ext4.

Are you getting a terminal within a very simple desktop GUI, or just a terminal with nothing else?

Oh dear . I ran the tc_install by following directions from the tc website. I added no extra options.
I now have a tc boot manager offering me core and windows.
Pleased to say win7 is still there and runs.
Now for the oh dear part.
Selecting core goes through a plain text phase before the colourful text.
I get an error message after
    ---
    decompressing linux... parsing elf... done.
    booting the kernal.
    ---
dmar: drhd: handling fault status reg 2
dmar: dmar: [dma read] request device [0e:00.1] fault addr fff00000
dmar:[fault reason 06] pte read access is not set
    ---
core then does go to a gui which I think means it is running.
    ---
I think I had an idea. Is 'nix basically stuff on top of a kernal?
I mean have I now got the basic part of 'nix and just need to add libraries to get the flavour that I want?
As you can guess from my choice of kde ubuntu 'nix is a new universe into which I have only dipped my toes lightly so far.

That error still may indicate a hardware problem with the system.

You can load plenty of software and libraries on Tinycore. You can download them from the APP menu, or compile and install them manually.

Tinycore is a great Linux distro and a good everyday desktop OS, but it behaves differently from Ubuntu/Debian based Linux distributions. There are some differences in the way software is loaded at boot and the way installed software is stored. Learning Tinycore Linux and learning Ubuntu/Debian are two different things, but both are good to know. The terminal commands are mostly the same though

How do I go about determining what or where the hardware problem is ?

Open a terminal, run lspci, and look for that device ID. This device may be having issues.

Boot from the Tinycore USB installer again, and then run it.

Do you have anything plugged into the red SATA ports? Don't use the red ports for now. Make sure that all your drives are plugged into the black ports.

Boot into the BIOS settings, go to the Advanced BIOS Features menu, disable the E-SATA Controller, and disable the SATA 3.0 controller.

Then see if the problems continue.

Whilst I am waiting for the US to come online
I thought I would try changing some of the options in bios advanced features, just to preempt those suggestions.

This may be an issue related to PCI-E Hot Plug support built in the kernel or built as a kernel module. I am not too familiar with TinyCore, but can you try and blacklist the pciehp module.

    Boot time parameter:

    tinycore blacklist=pciehp
