Too bad to see it going the way of the 8 track.  I've always had good results with Sli    , people always saying it did not scale well , ect ....  That was not at all my experience , but to each his own

After typing a list of the sli systems I have had I ... uhh ...  might be a bit biased ...
BFG Tech Geforce 8600 GT Sli
XFX 8800 GTX sli ( XXX Edition ) ( Liquid cooled ) Danger Den Blocks
XFX 9800 GTX Plus sli  ( air stock )
EVGA GTX 260 SC sli ( Liquid cooled ) Danger Den Blocks
EVGA GTX 280 SC Tri -sli ( Liquid cooled ) Danger Den Blocks
ATI Radeon HD 5970 QuadFire ( Liquid cooled ) EK Waterblocks
EVGA GTX 470 SC Tri -sli ( Liquid cooled ) Koolance Blocks
EVGA GTX 580 FTW Tri -sli Hydro Copper 2
EVGA GTX 780 Ti SC Tri -sli ( Liquid cooled ) Aquacomputer Kryographics Blocks
Nvidia Titan XP Sli ( Liquid cooled ) EK Waterblocks

Going to wait and see how the 3090's shake out before I upgrade again.

Hallowen has decided to stick to single card.

Yes (Unfortunately), After all the component problems such as having to put aside my Asus Rog Zenith II Extreme Alpha TRX40 because the one and only New Nvidia 3090 4-slot bridge to enable SLI wouldn't work on my 3-slot bridge Alpha motherboard and then having to buy an Asus Rog Strix TRX40 with the right 4-slot bridge spacing, BUT then finding out my memory on the Strix could only be run at stock settings when using my AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X.
When I finally did manage to get 2X 3090 SLI to work in Port Royal, I thought the worst was behind me, But Noooooooo.... For whatever reason I could not get my FTW3 Ultra's to run Time Spy Extreme in SLI without more problems occuring, So That was enough for me to decide to just run a single 3090 for now and wait (Like Sajin) for a 3090 KP when they become available.

After several years of SLi....last being my present 1080Ti set up with EK Blocks, I will also be going single card.....so many AAA Titles do not support SLi....pointless really....so...huge loop for SLi, not to mention a Corsair 1600W PSU ;)

There are two Nvlink bridges. A 4-slot and a 3-slot version. Last I heard, this is also true for the 30-series. Otherwise, a PCI-riser may work in some cases.

I don't personally have experience with Time Spy Extreme, but I did hear that the BIOS version can matter. Try updating it to the newest or second-last version.

I'm still contemplating a SLI-setup. But availability is a huge problem here in Europe. It's extremely hard to obtain a single 3090, let alone two identical ones. If AMD promises their new flagship to be faster than a 3090 this Wednesday, I'll probably attempt to get one of those. Didn't plan on AMD, because of no more CrossFire. But I really don't want to wait very long. So I'll go with whatever single card is fastest. A 3090 Kingpin does indeed sound very nice too.

I have not seen anyone as of yet talking of a 3 slot nvlink for the 3000 series being manufactured but I'm sure hoping someone does there is a boat load more of 3 slot boards then 4 slot boards in my opinion.

If anyone ever does make a 3-slot NVLink, You would absolutely have to use water cooled cards for SLI because there would be No air space between two stock 3090 air cooled cards which would cause problems with higher temperatures and possibly overheating damage.

...always seemed to be problems.
...I'm sure it could have worked out if it was focused on more...
...but truth is developers aren't going to spend a lot of time developing for the 0.01% of people who would really use it.

I wonder why only a microminority of people have been using it? It works so well!

You don't think that, if SLI--which is not an especially difficult problem--had been properly implemented, and a person with a mid- to top-range card could have had an instant ~60 to 95% increase in framerate by simply purchasing a cheaper second card, new or used, that there would have been a LOT more people taking advantage of it?

Of course there would have been.

This is a cart-before-the-horse viewpoint. Gamers can't use anything before it's available to use. So taking an option that has had disgusting support for well over ten years, and claiming that the reason it's not better is that no one uses it is entirely nonsensical. Of course no one's been using it.

(My first and last experiment in SLI--two GTX 260s--got me a 23.3% framerate increase at 1920x1200 in the game for which I needed it the most: Crysis. None of the other games for which I was below 60 fps on a single GTX 260 had great scaling either.)

As you correctly stated, it could have worked just fine. The greatest blow to SLI was the Great Consolization of 2008, in which AAA PC development effectively ended, and all major AAA games were henceforth conceived, designed, and developed for console hardware, and the sensibilities of the console gamer. Among the very last true AAA PC releases were The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and Crysis, both in 2007.

But even before that (as evidenced by the lack of proper support in Crysis which I mentioned), proper industry effort and coordination to maintain a solid protocol and straightforward implementation had not occurred. Though I wasn't a computer/PC gamer at the time, my understanding is that SLI, whether "Scan Line Interleaving" or other methods, was originally quite solid and functional. As video card hardware changed, and rendering became more complex in the '00s, it was not prioritized by an industry that was increasingly consolidated into a few huge developers, and increasingly interested in console-based Lowest Common Denominator development in order to maximize profits at the expense of innovation and creativity.

But again: If SLI actually worked, it wouldn't just be 0.01% of people who would really use it.
