Long story short, I had one of the original "faulty" 1080 FTW cards and RMA'd for a new one.  I still had the issue with black screen and fans going to full speed on certain graphic intense games.  For the most part, I wasn't playing most of them until I recently started playing Elder Scrolls Online.  Ever since, I have had BSOD issues, most of which refer to the nVidia driver.  Several others as well but it seems that the nVidia one comes up most of all.  I do have the latest nVidia drivers and the updated Bios installed.

So, for troubleshooting purposes, I downloaded Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility and CPUID HWMonitor.  Ran stress test on CPU and Memory with no issues.  When I ran the stress test on the GPU, I could watch the GPU temperature start climbing from about 39C all the way to about 78C.  Fans RPMS were around 2700rpm.  Sometime afterwards, the fans would go full on and the screen turns black.  I installed the heat sink mod to the card and the issue persists.  I did not receive a BSOD but this is the same thing that was happening last year before I RMA'd the old card.

So, my question would be this.  I had read that there are different PCIe bus speeds.  I currently run with an Asrock Z77 Extreme4 motherboard and Intel i5-3570k CPU.  Unfortunately, I also updated to the Windows 10 Creator's edition when it was offered.  Could my motherboard be too old to run this card?  Also, any help as to where to look next for troubleshooting advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Your psu, or pci-e power cables may be the cause of the problem. Have you tried powering the card with another psu, or with a different set of pci-e power cables? Have you tried testing the card in another system to see if you can replicate the issue?

I have not tried the card in a different system.  I have a 750W ps and the voltages look stable according to the CMOS screen.  That was one of the original troubleshooting points I was asked to look at during my initial problem last year.  I haven't ruled out the cpu yet but it does appear to pass the stress test.  Also, I have not overclocked anything yet and tried the nvidia debug mode with the same results.

Its 4 years old.  Rosewill 750w.  That's when I put this rig together.  The only upgrades made since then are a 500gb ssd and the GTX1080.

If its looking like the ps, is there a way to chart the ps voltages to a file to look at after a crash?

Yes, its the bronze model.  If that seems to be the general consensus, I don't mind sinking coin on a new one.  I just like to somehow 'prove' that is the culprit.

Being that this is an EVGA site, is that the best option or the best option for an EVGA card?

If you have a multimeter you can monitor your 12v rail while loading the system up to see if it dips below the acceptable threshold.

How to test your psu rails with a multimeter: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDFAQs&op=FAQ_Question&ndfaq_id=28

If any of your rails hit the minimum atx spec I would replace the psu with a new one.

HOW TO: Properly load your system when checking PSU voltages.
#1 Download & Install latest version of Prime95. Use small fft test.
#2 Download & Install Unigine Heaven 4.0. Make sure max settings are selected before running.
#3 Run both programs at the same time while checking voltages.

Yeah, Unigine by itself kills the video card in about 5 minutes on Extreme, black screen & fans full on.  Unfortunately all I have is an analog meter.  Never liked digitals much but I suppose they do serve a purpose.  Guess I'll be making a run for one now.  :)

Before jumping into a new PSU, try testing your GPU on a friends PC first.
That's one way to also determine the your PSU is beggining to give up.

    Case: Asus Z370-G Box / MB: Asus Z370-G / CPU: Intel I7 8700K / Mem.: 16GB (2x8) 3000Mhz Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 / GPU: GTX 1080TI FTW3 / A.I.O. W.C: EVGA CLC280 / PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G3 750W

had exactly the same symptoms as described by the OP with 2 1060sc vid cards, both brand new and both caused the same issue in some games, mainly under load.  Every combo of fixes with that card were tied and all resulted in the same outcome.

The Corsair PSU was the problem and after ripping it out and swapping it with an EVGA Supernova, the problem was completely fixed.

No friends I can try testing with.  When you get to be my age, friends become acquaintances.  Besides, if I tried that and they started having issues, I'd probably own that problem as well.  :)

I don't really mind spending a little on a better PSU if it'll fix my issues.  Probably fix the black screen / fan issue, not so sure about the BSOD though.  But I'll give it a shot.

Local computer repair shop is always an option.

Definitely sounds like a PSU problem to me.  Replacing that Rosewill crap would be first on my list of things to do anyway.

Installed my EVGA Supernova 750w PSU tonight.  Ran the Unigine Heaven Benchmark and did not experience a black screen/full fans shutdown.  Also played ESO and no BSOD.  One night and I'm getting a warm fuzzy.  Thanks for your help.  Keeping fingers crossed!
