For all those members who are new to Sli

So here is a step by step guide I have put together to ensure you configure and enable your SLi rig

You will need two Nvidia SLi cards which need to be the same model ie 2 x GTX460 ( but the cards do not have to be the same make)

You will also need a Sli bridge here is some examples below depending on your motherboard

Some people also get confused on with connector to put the SLi bridge it makes no difference if its placed in position 1 or 2 as per below image.

You will also need to download the latest drivers from Nvidia or from the Evga support site and install them on your computer.

Once your drivers and both of your cards are installed with the Sli bridge connector and power cables connected to your Gpu your ready to go.

1. To ensure Sli is enabled right click on your desktop and select the nvidia control panel

2. Once in the Nvidia control panel select Set Sli and Physx configeruration on the Task menu on the left hand side
to enable SLi Select radial button Maximize 3d performance as per below diagram.
For Physx settings select the Physx drop down bar which gives you three options
1.CPU
2 GPU 1
3 GPU 2
I use my GTX480 2 as Physx but its self preference

or if you have a Physx/Gpu card for dedicated Physx select which GPU you want to use and tick the dedicated to Physx box

3. Ok now that we have Sli enabled we can move on to Manage 3D settings to get the best out of your cards
so select Adjust image settings with preview on the Task menu on the left hand side.

Here we have three choices.

A. Let 3D application decide
B. Use the advanced 3D image settings
C. Use my preference emhasizing Quality

Select radial button next Use the advanced 3D image settings and click Take me there link

Now we have two tabs Global settings and Program settings

A. Global settings

By adjusting global settings this will adjust all  programs/and settings games used by Nvidia control panel

Its self preference what you want to set within Global settings

There is two settings I change with in Global Settings

1st.  Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration to single performance mode (as I only run one screen ) now select apply button at bottom of screen
 to save changes.

2nd SLi rendering mode to Nvidia recommended now select apply button at bottom of screen
 to save changes.

B. Program Settings

In program settings we can add applications by selecting the add button then browse your files and add the link used for that application ie BFBC2 start up shortcut this will allow you to set the setting for each individual program.

You can also add profiles from the Nvidia website to your Nvidia control panel.

This again is self preference as most modern games have AA and AF adjusments within game

The only thing I adjust is Sli rendering mode on my video media software and Firefox IE8 ect to single GPU for watching video's/browsing, I also change the Power managment mode to Adaptive to help save on power consumption.

For BFBC2 i have Sli rendering mode set to Alternative rendering frame 2 and my Power managment mode to Prefer Maximum Performance

4. To check whether SLI is working in your game or not, go to the 3D Settings in the horizontal menu bar at the top of your Nvidia control panel.
Check Show Sli visual Indicator as this will enable the SLI visual indicator in 3D Applications like games.

Now close you Nvidia control panel and open a game or application you should see a green bar on the left side/middle of the screen and SLi written next to it. This means SLI is working :-)

Well I hope this has helped any members on how to enable and check enable Sli......

I know it is not supposed to matter if the SLI bridge is on the front or rear sets of connectors.  However I had bad flicker in my ASUS 3-D monitor when plugged into rear connectors.  Cleared up when I moved to the front connectors.  Go figure.

    Question about "single performance mode".

A number of people on the Blizzard forums are reporting performance increases when setting it to the setting you recommended, but I don't see how this is the case when the description clearly states it affects OpenGL applications only unless I'm missing something.

Any truth to these reports you could fathom seeing as SC2 uses DirectX and not OpenGL on Windows based systems?

Single display performance mode has nothing to do with SLI and is only used when multiple monitors are connected to a graphics card.

Typically multi display acceleration is slower then single display when 2 monitors are active. So if you are using a single monitor always select single display performance mode.

Below is a guide on page 6 read the sectionon Multi-display/Mixed-GPU Acceleration

Right, I got that part, but if you read the description in the Control Panel when you highlight the option it reads:

"determines advanced OpenGL rendering options.." and so on.  So I'm curious to see if this has any impact on D3D games...I would expect no but I'll update it regardless

You can also add profiles from the Nvidia website to your Nvidia control panel.

Hi can you elaborate on how this is done?

also do you think an 875watt PS is good enough to sli two GTX460's that are overclocked to 780mhz?

    Alienware Aurora
core  i7920 2.67 ghz quad core
    6gig DDR3 1066mhz
    875 watt PS
    liquid cooling for CPU

Yes a 875w PSU will power those to cards but ensure its a descent make with good 12v rails

Excellent, thanks. I had an idea, and watched the EVGA Youtube video, but this is a bit more thorough. I am a first time builder, so I don't know very much about advanced settings and what-not.

I found the guide very helpful.

Would it be the same for 3 480s in sli? or is there different settings when you have three cards?

Alternate Frame Rendering - This is when the cards will take turns rendering the frames. One card will render all even frames, second card will render the odd frames.

Alternate Frame Rendering 2 - This is simply another version of Alternate Frame Rendering that is supposed to be more effective on certain applications.

Also changing the Power managment mode to Prefer Maximum Performance" will ensure the cards have enough juice to carry out the task

    Thanks for the how to.

I have a question about profiles.

I just updated to the latest drivers 260.99 and it says there is a SLI profile for New Vegas in there.
How do I know if it is using the profile?
The profile is not listed under the program settings tab only one for Steam. Unless I unclick 'show only programs found on this computer'
The SLI indicator shows that SLI is working. Does that also mean it is using the correct profile?

    Thanks,
    LouieIV

    ^^^^^^
The profiles enable and support the games to run Sli automatically as alot of modern game settings/adjusments are done within the ingame options panel. You can custom and force your own profile for the required game of your choice Read the below links

How would you create a sli profile for steam based games.  Do you just create it for steam.exe? or individually for each game?  Can someone post an example?
