I use a few devices at work that require a serial connection. Before anyone asks, no they do not make a USB alternative and the manufacturers also offer little to no support on their products (hint: anyone who was in the military should be familiar with the "we take the lowest bidding contractor" phrase.)

We've recently upgraded to Win 7 and i've spent countless hours trying to get these devices recognized by the OS. They all worked fine on vista and xp. I've scoured the internet looking for any success stories and have found none. Microsoft claims to support serial in win 7 and all of their help pages make no mention of issues, their only suggestion is "make sure the drivers are up to date." Seriously, who's putting out driver updates for serial controllers anymore.

So anyway, i'm not looking for help in making my devices work, i just want to know if anyone here has ever personally seen for themselves, a serial device working properly on windows 7. It might give me a shred of hope.

and you are connecting to serial devices? did they just work right off the bat, or did you do any troubleshooting? Are you using third party software or does windows just recognize the devices?
Any specific info you could give me would be great.
would i be rude to say "pics or it didn't happen" ?

I have had LOTS of funky issues getting Serial/console connections to work with Windows 7, but can assure you this works.
I've connected to, at least, a ProCurve switch (both DB25 to DB25 and DB25 to RJ45) and a Cisco router (DB25 to RJ45) with Windows 7 through Putty and have had great success. I will say the setup was a little weird because most of my Windows 7 boxes wouldn't connect, but the odd thing is I was able to get a Lenovo X61 laptop with Windows 7 installed to work fine, on the DOCKING station.

Whenever I run into problems, I use my Linux box, but I doubt you have that option.

For our Mac computers, we use these:

But I haven't been able to get them to work with Windows 7.

I hope this helps, and I hope you are able to get it to work.
I can actually get pics of Windows 7 consoling into a switch if you don't believe me. :)

nether a problem connecting a serial device as long as the serial card has been installed with the correct drivers, windows 7 always flags the device in yellow untill the drivers are installed
