You would want to get it without the heat sink as the Z690 has a heat sink for the M.2 built into the board. It takes removing the metal plate next to where it says "Classified" between the PCI-E slots. The thermal pad provided with the motherboard goes on the PCB of the motherboard in the marked area and then the M.2 SSD finally you replace the metal and screw it back into place.

Hope this helps You mate [both temps and compatibility-wise]:

These are on Z690 Dark Kingpin, but they have basically the same cooling as Classy so that's that.

Err, so I bought the Samsung 980 pro m.2 and did not realize the z690 had a ssd heatsink. It is the boot drive for my new PC.

Has anyone... Ran their z690 with m.2's installed WITHOUT the heatsink? Is there any way to install that heatsink on top of this 980 pro, perhaps with the thin pad or with 1 of the pads not installed? I didn't realize this would be an issue until getting this in my hands... : /

Are you saying you bought a 980 Pro with heat sink? If so, I’d do a return/exchange for one without a heat sink since these boards feature an all-encompassing heat sink for all the m.2 slots, and the boards also come with thermal pads for m.2 drives. Otherwise, reference the manual for further clarification since it does a pretty good job at describing how to install m.2 drives and provides pictures to go along with the description.

Yep. I was hoping someone with experience with this board had a workaround, but that is what I wound up doing. I borrowed a thin(no heatsink) m.2 out of another machine in my house and used that for now. I'm returning the 980 pro and I'll try to find a similarly fast m.2 to replace it. If samsung makes the same 980 pro but without the heatsink, I'll grab that.

Thanks.

Samsung definitely does. I’ve got 6 980 Pro SSDs, all that came without a heat sink.

Heatsink and heatsinkless version are identical, You just remove/uninstall the original Samsung heatsink, it's no big deal. You have heatsink embeded on board, so no need for additional one.

This entire metal section covers 3 m.2 and is in direct contact with them since it is their heatsink. There is zero chance of an NVMe fitting with a preinstalled heatsink on it since the board already comes with the heatsink. The board also comes with thermal pads.

Hey guys, new here.

So i recently purchased the z690 classy board, it was at 1.03 BIOS and updated it to latest 1.14, just in case, kept it at default settings.
I also purchased the 2TB Samsung mentioned by the OP, and been trying to install for past two days the Win 10/11 to it, and it is NOT recognized by the OSs setup, yes the M.2 ssd is enabled in BIOS, under "Advanced\NVMe Configuration" though is NOT visible in BIOS, I just cant find what could possibly be wrong as to why is not seen during installation :( any of you happen to have any clues at all what could be wrong? also, it is installed in slot 1 for m.2 (CPU) not the PCH ones.
Samsung website has no official drivers for it either, so i am completely lost as to what else to try.

It would fit if you took off the EVGA heatsink and did not use it...

I am having issues with the NVME ports. I have all 3 populated, but only 2 are recognized. Third doesn't show in bios or windows. The drive works fine in other computers.
