Would the X299 Dark motherboard be compatible for this 4gen slot card?

All Motherboards with PCI 3.0 or greater should be fine. Steve from GN said that you only lose about 3-6 FPS being in a PCI 3.0 slot. I think PCI 2.0 you lose alot more.

PCIe 4.0 is backwards compatible with 3.0 in both directions. 4 card in a 3 slot & 3 card in a 4 slot.
So if the motherboard is PCIe 3.0, a 4.0 card will work 100% perfectly fine in a 3.0 slot. You just don't see the increased bandwidth 4.0 allowed.

Plenty of benchmarks show that the difference between PCIE 3.0 and PCIE 4.0 is almost nothing on the 30 series cards.

I think a lot of people will be happy to hear they don’t have to upgrade. Though with the cost if these cards most prob will

Never hurts to future proof a little bit if it's still in your budget.

Tom's hardware only found a ~4% max performance hit. That said, if you plan to upgrade every year probably go with pcie4 mobos if you can since future gpus will almost guaranteed bottleneck it more.

I definitely am. I decided to build a new computer right now, and didn't wait to upgrade my CPU, Motherboard, case, PSU, and GPU. So, glad to hear it isn't too much of a performance bump at the moment. I mean, I will probably upgrade again in a few years, but this was the time I decided to go all out with my upgrade and get a LG CX 55" with G Sync as well, to treat myself for this horrible year.

I was going to say the same thing; however, I'm curious if Direct Storage will show any significant improvements with PCIe 4.0 or not.
