I was thinking maybe because my board is X16 and card is 2.0 but I am at a loss on what to do. Feels like I might be damaging my comp with constant restarts over and over. But, like I said if I try to shut comp down normally will always tell me computer was shut off incorrectly and want me to go into safemode anything but safemode restarts comp.

-just to add
had bsod's after 570sli in and out a few times, new vid. drivers
-my bsod issue went a way with a bios mb update, and
-at the same time noticed, my speakers were at only 2.1,found in the sound icon-volume control options all the hdmi devices ,but my sound card was no longer the default nor was anything else, so bios and play back device default set up did it for me.
Two weeks BSOD free.
so peeps you also might want to check that you have a default sound device.

Re:UPDATE... 2011/02/22 19:04:40 (permalink)
Here is how I fixed my problem.

I did a fresh install of windows 7 x64 on my system. Installed 266.xx drivers from the evga website and then installed the chipset drivers that came with my asus motherboard cd. And lastly restarted my computer. This resulted in the login freeze that many of you guys are experiencing.

So I reset my CMOS and unplugged everything that I didn't need such as USB 3.0 ports, extra Sata/IDE hard drives, etc. Afterwards, I turned my computer back on again and I logged right into Windows. I am pretty sure this is a drivers issue, not hardware.

I've read that this is a sound card error. Are you guys setting your audio to AC 97 or HD Audio? When I set my audio to HD Audio as opposed to the AC 97, I am able to log in without the windows freezing on me at the login.

Re:UPDATE... 2011/02/23 17:34:15 (permalink)
Well, disabling the HD audio helped me out.  Thanks, because I was about ready to kick my computer to the curb because I could not figure out what was going on.  Scratch that, did not work.   After reading posts all over, here in evga and the Nvidia forums, this whole problem can be boiled down to a GPU/motherboard conflict.  I was freezing right after post. I found this one <http://forums.nvidia.com/...ic=187401&st=0> and basicaly started fooling around with BIOS settings.  I have an Asus Rampage Formula MB and I set the PEG Force X1 [Enabled].  I got to windows without freezing and so far have not had any problems (fingers crossed)

I went back in and disabled it, still stable.....So maybe that was not it....but it is still stable, so time to go back to the OC settings for my CPU and NB....

GPU froze right after post.  I know it is not my OC settings as I have them tried and tested and I know they are stable.  (Why can't I just leave things alone)   So this time I switched slots for the 470 and put it in the lower (I am only running one, no SLI right now) and I got back into windows.  (fingers crossed again)

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This fixed something slightly different yet just as annoying, since I get a 400 series card for my PC it wouldn't go to sleep. I tried countless things, from the basic to the extreme and all I had to do was disable the audio device associated with my 400 and now it sleeps again. Thank you, this has been bugging me since last year when these cards came out.

Wow thankfully I found this thread too!  For some reason while I could run one 580 fine, running both of them would ultimately result in a hang within two days for no reason at all.  I'll post the process in the 500-series / SR-2 thread but needless to say, it's helped my stability a lot.  Thanks!

Edit... did a reboot and still having the problem intermittantly.  Might try some of the other suggestions in this thread.  Oh well.

OK.. have not had black screen at login again - just that first time, however I'm now getting black screen every time I try to run windows experience index..and that is every time without exception.

I also flashed Marvell firmware to latest version and re-installed the Marvell drivers.

Everything is running on auto / stock clocks - meaning CPU, GPU's, and RAM on auto, along with voltages on auto.

This is crazy. Thousands of $ worth of PC should not have this many problems.

I'm going to sleep.

Been googling.. tonight I may try putting the SSD on one of the Intel SATA2 ports and disable Marvell SATA3.. that fixed some issues for some people.

Re:UPDATE... 2011/04/08 20:15:48 (permalink)
Holy Hannah.. I thought I had it under control.. boy was I wrong.. had at least 25-30 black screens tonight, to the point where I'd reset, get to windows login, then it would crash again.. over and over. I went through every step on the OP of this thread again tonight, and it was ok for a while, then it started doing it again, and with increasing frequency. Just opening a freaking pdf file caused a black screen about 15 minutes ago! I am at my wits end.

It seems resets just make it worse and worse. Switching off and unplugging the PSU for a few minutes, then resetting BIOS to defaults is how I managed to get back into windows again and post this.

I've just ordered a Corsair AX1200 to replace my HX1000 to see if that will alleviate it at all, although I can't afford the expense atm.. so on the credit card it goes. Watch the marketplace for the HX1000 soon!

This is just so frustrating. I'm almost ready to part out the whole thing and buy a ready-built high-end gaming laptop and give up building PCs altogether.

Going to switch the SATA3 SSD to the standard SATA2 connector now and disable the Marvell plugs and see if that helps any. If I don't come back, you'll know that I was unable to login again because of blackscreens.

..an hour later: Was hopeful, then I ran 3DMarkVantage and blackscreened part way through. No overclock on anything.
I don't know what else to do.

Re:UPDATE... 2011/04/08 21:54:28 (permalink)
For what it's worth.. it's possibly something to do with SLI. If I disable SLI and run OC scanner, it chugs along no problem. If I enable SLI then start OC Scanner, I get blackscreens as soon as I try to run a stress test.

Strange.. if I select GPU1 in OC scanner, it tests GPU1. If I select GPU2, it tests GPU1 again. This is with SLI disabled, and makes no difference if I have the SLI bridge on or not.

Maybe I should just sell one of the cards and stick with a single card? At least I can use my freaking PC then...

Re:UPDATE... 2011/04/09 20:38:04 (permalink)
Worked ok all day with SLI disabled, then it black screened again while playing Civ V. Rebooted, got into Civ V, and it blackscreened again within a few minutes. I shut down the PC and powered off for 15-20 minutes, came back, and was able to play again for half an hour.. then I came here.

It's like there's some 'thing' that builds up over time, and once it hits a certain level, the PC keeps black screening over and over until it's been powered off completely for a good 15+ minutes, then everything is ok again for a while, until it builds up to some level again and it's rinse and repeat.

Seriously, is nobody else still having this problem, or have they all just sold their rigs and moved on?

I'm on a water setup, so it's a major pain having to swap or remove cards etc just to test different setups over and over. I'll could go try a single card only again and see what happens... although I'm still blackscreening even now with SLI disabled.. and going back through this thread, there's been very close to jack schitt from NVidia or EVGA about it..

Re:UPDATE... 2011/04/11 15:09:23 (permalink)
Went back to a single card only yesterday, and have not had a single black screen since. *Maybe* my HX1000 was not supplying enough juice when it really needed to (both cards were on one 12V rail, and I had no choice in that), but the AX1200 that is due for delivery in a couple of days should remove that question.

I did notice that my 3.3V rail was only running just over 3.0V with both cards, and now is 3.28V with one card.. the 5V and 12V rails were both slightly over spec before and after.

If the AX1200 doesn't fix the problem, then I'm stumped. Even with SLI disabled but both cards installed, I was still getting black screens. ..and yes, I have the PCIe 12V molex plugged in on the mobo as well.

If anyone gives a cr@p, I'll update in a few days when I have the AX1200.. and some time to install it.

iv never ran into the blackscreen issue, but i dont use sata III, I dont use onboard sound, I dont use onboard lan, I always disable the gpus audio via control panel. Running beta drivers still atm. The 267.59's with modded nv_disp.ini
Never ran into this issue with my GTX 480's nor my GTX 460's, always use my guide & always disable the gpus audio devices.

Was using an MSI 980-g65 mobo, got random black screens, no startup errors, now using it in my Gigabyte 890FX UD5, nothing but issues, it will run fine for about an hour, then take a dump. So is there no good fix then? Obviously there is a problem here... My specs below:

The AX1200 fixed the problems for me it seems... now running both cards again in SLI, and not a single black screen since. I guess the HX1000, being not just 2 rails but effectively 2 x 500W PSUs, could not quite handle the task when the cards really needed the juice. Unfortunately due to the way the cabling was done, I had to put both cards on one rail, so that may have been the issue (load balance).

I ended up RMAing my gtx 470 that had this problem to evga, and got back a card that is even worse then the original!!

My original card would black screen from a cold boot, reset, then the card was fine for the day.

The RMA card black screens everytime you boot and is totally unusable sometimes with pink artifacts all over the screen. I am very upset about having to RMA it again and waste more time on this problem. What is going on with this? I think customers deserve an explaination from someone, either it be EVGA or Nvidia.

On top of all that trouble, my original card hard a highflow bracket installed and they sent me back a stock original one!

Needless to say I will never be buying an EVGA product ever again.

The same thread in the forums (not this stickied version) included a method which I did not see on this thread, so I'm reposting it here:
rjohnson11

OK everyone, I haven't really heard of many problems with 3D or sound drivers but if everyone is that concerned there is a far easier way to do this.

1: Download the latest NVIDIA based drivers which is my case are these:
258.96_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english_whql.exe

2: Make an empty folder and copy this file into that folder

3: Download and install winrar

4: Go into the folder and right click the file 258.96_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english_whql.exe

Choose Extract Files

5: Choose OK in the winrar box and the files will be extracted to a folder

6: Go into that folder and delete these files:

3DVision_258.96.exe
hdaudio_1.0.15.0_xp_vista_win7.exe

7: Run setup and it will install the drivers without installing HD Audio or 3D Vision

If anyone has any questions please let me know. This procedure is not approved by NVIDIA or EVGA.

Ok i have been running my 460 with my MSI board with no problem but on my 450 on my new build for my daughter I get random crashes and errors. I went to go to guru3d.com to get the driver sweeper and it says it is no longer available or supported?  where else can I get a copy?

ok read about 1000 threads online and stumbeled over this one.
Want to hear the funny part here?Jeh right i built a new system and had an EVGA gtx460 first which died after 24h
screening pink sploshes.
So i took some hard drugs and went for the gigabyte gtx460 - and here the black screens started.
I tried all hacks you can imagine and i just wanted to tell you guys..

were screwed.

I've been beating this issue since EVGA RMA'd my 275 for a 470.

In one hand I'm happy to see 10 pages worth of other people having the same problem, at least I know what the problem is.

I've tried this fix on my own (I put 2+2 together on my own).  It helped, but did not fix.

This is crap, I've spent tons of time trying to resolve this on the phone with EVGA, no one knew about this?  They need to make good on their mistake.  I think they know about this and that is why everyone is getting the 470 for RMA.

Anyone know if the 500's have the same issue?

Re:PROCEEDURE to PERMANENTLY DISABLE THE NVIDIA HD sound device(BLACK SCREEN & LOGIN FIX) 2011/06/25 07:42:14 (permalink)
drew,

i spoke with a 'tier 2' rep at evga (which i think everyone does at some point) and, ironically, they had 'no idea' about the issues on their OWN forum. i mean i repeatedly asked him if he was aware of the major thread (i believe its stickied) on their own website in which dozens upon dozens of people are having the SAME issue with the 400 AND 500 series card. i just started a new thread about my issues as well for documentation purposes.

your problem is almost exactly like mine. i had a 260 and they sent me a 460 and the freezes began immediately. you can check my thread for details but they sent me a replacement 460 on top of the first one they sent me, still the same issues even with the new drivers. this is not a driver issue as many people are having issues with the freezes occurring during the bios post screen, which points to an issue with the card.

the bottom line here is we don't know specifically what the issue is, but are almost positive it is a series issue (400/500) or a compatibility issue between the 400/500 series and certain motherboards/certain system configurations, in particular older systems from what i've seen.

i'm going to be calling them ASAP to request they send me a NEW 260. the question i have is will buying a different brand (not evga) resolve this issue, or is this a specific evga issue. i'm guessing its a nvidia series issue.

From what I've heard it's not just EVGA, but to reiterate my earlier posts, I have not had a single black screen since I upgraded my PSU to the Corsair AX1200. Not even once.

I will have to play around with this to see if this is what has been causing a BSOD for me from time to time. Occasionally my system just bogs down for no apparent reason. Thanks for the post I will keep an eye out for any possible drivers to help with this as well.

You know, this has had me perplexed for a long time. I tried everything to fix it and nothing would.
I have also been having BSODs and thought that the black screen was part of the BSODs and I have since fixed them, found it was my combo FDD/Card Reader.
I happened on this thread today and have done what was suggested, hope it works :)
Thank YOU.

I tired this but still kept getting the BSOD and Black Screen. On one of the BSODs I got a RT64Win.sys problem, turns out the onboard  Realtek lan drivers are the cause of that so they are now disabled in BIOS and am using a BIG Foot Nertwork card.
Interesting to see if this is now fixed????
