They probably just upped the 2d voltage with the modded bios.  I had a feeling it might be this because alot of the black screens happen while surfing and watching videos.  You can do this with Nibitor and NVflash if you know what you're doing.  Something else I've noticed is that my GTX 470 doesn't downclock with the newest driver (260.99).  When I was using 258.96 it would drop to 50 mhz core but with the newer one the lowest it will go is 405 mhz?!?

Mine doesn't crash whilst browsing the web, mine crashes when I open a game also I am on 260.99 and mine downclocks to 51 core.

How do I do that? In Afterburner?

Afterburner will work and is good for experimenting to find which voltages work the best.

Seems like mostly 460's and 470's are having this problem. Also I noticed this seems to be an issue with motherboards that have onboard sound?

I have a 480sc+ and x58 Classy 3. (no onboard sound) Hope I don't have this issue. Guess I have to wait until next weekend to build the rig and find out.

Although it would seem that with so many devices trying to impliment sound (vid card, mobo and even a sound card) that one would likely expect to have a problem.

Just a thought.

Has anyone at nvidia had anything interesting to say about this issue?

Hi, just to say I had the freeze at login issue, tried many solutions including the one given here. I returned the card to the shop, they had the same issue and sent me a brand new card. No problem with it for a month.

So, don't try too hard to solve this problem as if it was a software or compatibility problem. It can be a pure hardware issue.

Hi,

I'm having problems with my PC I will describe it next, the PC randomly freeze (black screen and totally freezes -> Solution: Reset), most of the times it happens when launching or loading a game (Most when launching Bad Company 2, also and not so frequent: Company of Heroes and COD4, sometimes I can play during 1 hour and suddenly the PC freezes, sometimes I can play and never freezes) also not very frequent when opening Adobe Soundbooth.

I changed my PC 20 days ago so I thought that the problem was a hardware issue but after contacting EVGA Support, reading a lot over the Internet (Google and forums) I concluded that the hardware was right (I have done some video rendering and the PC works fine), also many people are experiencing the same, I have already done two guides on how to allegedly fix this issue:

EVGA Support
nVidia Support

After doing that the problem is still present, I have to mention that I already did some stress test VideoCard (EVGA OC Scanner: 1 hour 6 min)  and a MemTest (12 hours), everything went fine.

I have format 5 times already trying to figure this out, I have changed settings on the BIOS (one by one) and is up to date, I have loaded default settings on BIOS, any of this works.

Update:

After several days this is what I have experienced: My PC works great on 2D, running programs and working (Photoshop, VirtualDub, Ms Office, CorelDraw, Nero Burning Rom, DVDFab, etc., check the image what I have running on my PC:  ).
I have been able to play without any problem. The PC freezes when running games and also TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, Skype it's being used, I have done some testing using Xfire voice communication and so far I have not experienced any lock up.
Yesterday (Dec. 6, 2010) I was using VirtualDub and I experienced a lock up but TeamSpeak was running.

This thread really needs to be renamed to indicate that there is no "fix" and that there remains a serious problem.

How pathetic is it that we spend hundreds on video cards only to have them fail in 2D mode and bootup? This should be a much more prominent issue that Nvidia needs to take seriously, much like ATI's GSOD embarrassment.

I will certainly not be recommending any Nvidia products until this is sorted out.

Hello
About two months ago I've bought Gigabyte GTX 470 SOC and I've been bothered by the infamous black screen problem.
I've been watching this thread and similar on the web for weeks hoping someone had finally found working solution for the black screen error. I tried many solutions people provided, unfortunately none of them worked for me. I RMA'd my card twice, but my retailer kept sending it back claiming it is fine and it passed 24H tests. I was so frustrated I almost gave up and promised myself never ever buy Nvidia product again.

But I struggled a bit more and I'm almost sure I found it.

My config:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 2.6 GHz
Motherboard: MSI Eclipse SLI
RAM: 6144 MB OCZ 1333Mhz Platinium CL7
PSU: Be Quiet! Dark Power P7-PRO 850W (6 lines +12V 20Amps each)
HDD: 3*Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB (2 of them in Raid 1)
LCD: 2*Samsung SyncMaster 2343BW (DVI-I)

What is the solution? Rise IOH Vcore voltage and PCIe frequency.
Due to my overclock (3.5 Ghz @175 Mhz bclk) I already had risen ioh voltage to 1.11 v but it seems it was not enough. Even when I reseted my overclock 1.11v was not enough.

When I set it up at 1.12v I noticed black screen occured less often and sometimes driver was able to recover which never happened before. Then I raised PCIe clock to 103 Mhz and so far my card never blackscreened again. It's been over a week without a single issue and before it blackscreened very often after windows log on. I've performed almost 100 computer restarts to make sure the problem is gone.

So if you're on x58 platform you could try that, I suppose AMD users could follow that lead and also try rising northbridge voltage and PCIe clock.

Any software related solution didn't work for me, this one works. Hope it will help someone.

EDIT
AHHH forget it. The card blackscreened on me the day before yesterday and yesterday again.  So there's no working fix for this. I'm planning to do last thing before I switch to AMD - tinker with bios and raise 2d/low 3d voltage.

O.K. I.ve got the login/black screen problem also.
Had a EVGA GTX260-everything is great. Wanted DX11 and something new to play with so I got a MSI Talon Attack GTX460 1gb.
One month later this bs starts. Using Vista64 on a ic7 -920 @ 3.3ghz. Never had an issue with anything.
Psu is a PCP+Cooling 610wt . Initially lovin the 460 then all of a sudden it takes longer to get to login screen then hangs at the Welcome circle Windows thing or gets past that to a black screen!
Of course I've tried everything we all have, thinking I needed a format, a new hdd, a new psu- you know.
Then I come across this and it's exactly the problem/s I'm having.
I tried the op's suggestion but the problem will come back just when I think I've got it fixed.
To say I'm pissed off would be an understatement.
The final insult is even if I RMA I could get an equally ****ed up card or worse.
Iv'e been with Nvidia since the original TNT16mb. If this isn't resolved I'm going to eat the $ and try an ATI product.
Never thought I'd say that.

Thanks for that post, Colets. Amazing stuff, will have to try it out.

One thing that I noticed myself is that (a) whenever this lockup occurs, it is almost always at startup, (b) the clocks are almost always in low power 3D mode when it occurs, and (c) you can drastically reduce the occurrence by making sure not to apply OC settings at startup. I simply use hotkeys to start my OC right before a gaming session, or any other time after the system has been on after a few minutes.

Ok I have been working on this for like 8 hours.  Computer is windows vista 32 bit.  After installing the EVGA 450 GTS I lost onboard audio.  I have followed the directions on here 3 times now and cannot get this fixed.  I have the latest audio drivers for my computer from the HP website.  No matter what I do I am unable to get my onboard audio drivers to show up or install.  It shows its installed in my programs list in control panel but it never installs an audio device.  The computer always recognizes the HDMI audio from the graphics card.  I have tried to keep the HD disabled and the realtek doesn't install.  I have finished with having no audio drivers installed whats so ever in safe mode and when the computer reboots it always find the HDMI audio.  Currently I am reformatting the computer and going to do a clean install and try that.  Am I missing something here?

Edit:  I left the card in during the reformat, and right away it picked up on HD audio from the card and it gets rid of the on board audio drivers.  I have no clue where to go from here.  Might have to try to send it back and get a different card.  Can't believe they released a product that would do this.

Well, it happened to me again today.  My system was up and running for 11 days no issues.  I was playing Mass Effect 2 when it froze.  It appeared to be the game at first.  I was able to get back to my desktop and decided to reboot.  Sure enough, I rebooted, got to the login screen, entered my password, and the system froze.  After I entered my PW, the monitors went black and then shut off completely (the power light on my monitors went from green to amber, indicating no video out from the graphics cards).  I am going to try setting my PC to login automatically without a password, to see if that helps (the blackscreen will always occur right after typing in my password).  Also, no minidump logs were created when my system froze.

EDIT:  just found this in my event log...it occured right after I entered my password.  Its not an error message (just INFO) but I have never seen this before.  Anyone else with the blackscreen see this message in their event viewer?

I will definitely try the PCI frequency change.  As far as the IOH Vcore, I am only overclocking my memory (running @ 1600Mhz).  Would you recommend I change the Vcore as well, or just the PCI freq?

Update:  Ok, I changed the PCI E Frequency to 103 in the BIOS.  I have not messed with the Vcore yet since I am not sure if I need to (running @ stock CPU clocks).  I would also like to see if the PCI E freq change solves my problem.  In the past, I simply kept my system on for as long as possible without rebooting.  As of today, I will start rebooting multiple times per day to see if the change helps.  I will post my results asap.

I still have the issue too. It's completely random. Usually while booting the system. Why the hell hasn't this been addressed yet?

It is not clear to me whether this BSOD problem is occurring with EVGA's nVidia cards (460 gtx and a few others)) only.  I tried to search the web for what is happening with ASUS and Gigabyte nVidia owners, but could not trace the issue with them.

Can anyone comment on the matter please ?

@colets

I bumped the PCI frequency to 103 as you suggested.  Taken IOH as high as 1.14.  Typically I am only seeing random blackscreens (every few days to a week) while doing 2D work.  This time the screen turned blue at login (not a BSOD) and locked up.  Still nothing useful in the event log.

This is not exactly a helpful post, but I do want to note that I recently replaced an MSI GD80 motherboard with an Asus P7P55 WS. I must have rebooted more than a couple dozen times in the last three days, and I have yet to experience the freezing and crashing at startup that typified my previous experience.

I'm trying to think of what might be different about this motherboard, but the only thing I can think of is that I don't have my audio card installed in it yet (Xonar D1). So maybe it is an IRQ conflict of some sort.

I'll have a more certain answer in the next week or so when I add the sound card back in and have more of a timeframe to see whether the crashing has truly disappeared.

OMG!!!!! I have been dealing with this problem all day!!!! And it's finals week and I have crap to get done.

Anyway, I hope I can fix this. Currently I can't even log into my installation of windows, I'm currently moving all my files just in case I have to do a fresh install. SERIOUSLY Nvidia you have cost me hours of my time thanks!!

@H0sh1 realy? i think that evga won't give u any bios update for your video card, the truth in their site... they don't support any bios update... maybe u can upload the bios update for this fix?

@Tomuhlau: I think you were lucky that time... I was told that there was zero issue founded how could they replace my card??

@Dunkimkid: thanks for all your help, but the truth your method doesn't help me to solve my problem... I meant many of my friends doubt that the issue is caused by the sound driver... more likely they believe that it's a northbridge problem they told me to thrash my old mother board... of course it costs money again... I think your method is used for other issue.

@ALL: I think that the blackscreen occurs when the adobe flash player or any kind of flash is running..., Video, idle, music

Still no fix and confirmation from NVIDIA? luckily it doesn't only occur on EVGA 400 but also some other brands NVIDIA KEEP ON CLOSING THEIR EYES! ~~

I ended up having to reformat, disabled the sound thing in device manager before installing driver 197.75. No problems yet. The problem is probably something conflicting with Nvidia's drivers, I don't know but it sucks hardcore either way.

i have the random black screen problem.. (happens rarely) but i've been reading the thread and the problem seems to be a conflict between the two sound devices, for which the most common solution is to disable nvidia hd drivers.. i was wondering if disabling the onboard sound could be a possible alternative?
(i need hd audio to bitstream audio)

Hey guys, it's me again.

Back in October, I had the same problems everyone here has been experiencing, and from the looks of things, the issue still has not been fixed or acknowledged. I gave up, and bought a new card. The important thing that I wanted to note was that I haven't experienced a problem since then. While I know it's not practical to recommend buying a new card, but that's the grim reality of the situation. Even if the fixes suggested by community members work, there is no guarantee that it'll last.

Question; Are the same issues being experienced by 500 series owners?

What card did you switch to?  Was it another NVIDIA card or did you switch to ATI?

I got an ATI Radeon 5850.

While my first 470 was out for RMA, I was using my old 8800GT, and it worked like a charm. I sold/gave the replacement 470 to use in my Brother's computer, and he hasn't experienced a problem yet, so it worked out in the end. Then again, I worry everyday that he'll start experiencing problems.

F***ck this. My solution didn't work either. Yesterday the card blackscreened again. I'm almost hopeless and I'm planning to switch to AMD. I'll try last resort solution - raising 2d/low 3d voltage in video card's bios. If this won't work I'll never ever buy nvidia product again.

ahh man, I was hoping your fix would work (I just changed my PCI E frequency recently).  Since I changed the Frequency, I have not had a Black Screen, but if it didn't work on your system, I am assuming I will get another BS at some point...oh well, back to the drawing board!

Been thinking about upgrading my 9800GTX to a gtx460. Just curious if any users with a GTX460 running Win XP Pro have had any issues mentioned in this thread? My onboard audio is disabled and my sound card is a Creative Soundblaster XFI.
