https://www.techpowerup.com/271482/overclockers-achieve-1000-fps-on-doom-eternal When id Tech's lead developer announced that id Tech 7 the game engine responsible for Doom Eternal could run at 1000 FPS many assumed current hardware wouldn't be able to hit the mark. Polish hardware retailer X-kom in collaboration with Bethesda has achieved this feat with only consumer hardware and some serious liquid nitrogen overclocking. The challenge was part of the QuakeCon at Home event and saw X-kom push the Intel Core i7 9700K to 6.6 GHz paired with an ASUS RTX 2080Ti Strix overclocked to 2.4 GHz. The motherboard used was the ASUS Maximus XI APEX which was powered by a 1200 W Be Quiet Straight Power supply. An amazing feat!

That level of optimization is incredible. It's genuinely mindboggling how many operations are occurring simultaneously it takes to have a 1 kHz framerate.

That level of optimization is incredible...
DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal do not achieve high framerates because they are better coded and optimized than other games, but because they are among the least-demanding AAA games of this generation. Remember: 'demanding' means that which is being delivered by a game actually requires, or demands, a high level of resources--not that it uses a high level of resources. I could write a program that displays the message "Hello, World!", and maxes the CPU and GPU while doing so, but it would not be a demanding program because its purpose--displaying the message "Hello, World!"--does not demand that kind of processing power. I'm not saying that DOOM 2016 and Eternal are poorly-coded or -optimized at all. But unlike other AAA games: * There is no huge open world to render * There is no highly dynamic environment * There is no environmental destruction * There is no physics to speak of * There aren't tens or hundreds of NPCs, and no complex AI to calculate The fact of the matter is that there isn't that much going on, and not near as much to calculate as in most other AAA games. DOOM 2016 was one of the few post-2013 AAA games that I really enjoyed, and is a testament to the fact that interesting and well-designed gameplay is the foundation of any game. More technical complexity can allow more gameplay opportunities, but all that extra technology has to be utilized by a competent game designer; which doesn't happen often lately, in my opinion. Alien: Isolation is another post-2013 AAA game I've played that would be similarly non-demanding for the same basic reasons.

Yeah just drop a while(1) in there and watch the world burn... Although, there is something to be said about it being able to push at that rate and even support performance levels up to that. All your points are valid, but you can't discount the fact that it survives this level of play which it wasn't designed for. Often when pushed like this it only takes some minor mismanagement of resources to cause a crash.
