Not every one is moving to a smaller case. This thing has plenty of room for storage and cable management and a big plus for custom water loops and a lot of people are still sticking with 3 and 4 way SLI. Why this thing even has room to custom mod a 5.25 inch bay in it. Who really wants to have a library of optical disks taking up space when you can just download anything from the net. Must be the same people who have a large collection of 8 tracks, records and VHS tapes laying around. Pack Rats.

Some of us have Blu rays that we watch on our PCs, simple as that really. Good thing I have the case I do (900D), don't really foresee my self ever HAVING to upgrade. Would of been nice to get this case as it is nice though.

I understand. Along with your 8 tracks and VHS you have a blue ray collection too. I watch every thing online in HD or 4K and don't have a thousand disks and 8 tracks and tapes laying around. The 900D is a nice case and was in consideration but I wanted another EVGA logo. My DG 86 is on its way and hope I don't have to upgrade for a long long time as well.

I understand that some people are ok with the lower quality and compression of streaming services, but others like having the higher quality picture/sound that you get from Blu-ray.  Has nothing to do with being a "pack rat"

Because UBS drives present a security risk for my customer we have to deliver our data on optical disc.

I’m building 10 workstations for my office I’m still going with EVGA X99 motherboards and 1080 Video cards, but because of the drive bay issue I’m going with a Corsair 750D case, PSU and cooler.

Windows 7 64 bit         CPU: I7 3820
MB: EVGA  X79 FTW      Video: EVGA 760 GTX
PSU Corsair HX520W    Case: Corsair Obsidian 650D
Cooler: Corsair H100I   Optical: Asus BD/RW
RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistic 1600 Low Profile
SSD: Samsung 840 250 GB HDD: 1TB Barracuda

There's plenty of room inside of the case to install an optical drive if you really want one.  I went with a vertical loader, because it was easier to mount.  It's installed in a way that allows it to be almost completely hidden from view when it's closed.

Originally I thought having to open the side door (the big, clear plastic door) every time I wanted to change DVDs/blu-rays would get annoying... but actually it's no hassle at all.  Plus I use the optical drive very infrequently, it's not a big deal.

It says I'm a superclocked member, but really I'm just here for the chicks.

I'm in the unique position of getting a DG-85 case for free.

I won the case in a competition I didn't even know I entered. And although it's bigger than the case I was going to buy for my new PC, I wasn't going to complain because hey, free case!

However when I was trying to install my blu-ray player, I got really confused. The manual indicates that there are "screws for an optical disk", and those screws come with the case. However I couldn't figure out where to mount the drive. And it turns out, I can't. There is no 5.25 inch bay anywhere.

What's really disappointing is that because the case is so big, you would expect there to be at least ONE 5.25 inch bay. And there are multiple places in the case which would be perfect for the bay to be located, if only the design had widened a gap by a few millimeters, etc.

If I hadn't won this for free, I wouldn't have bought one. As it is, I am seriously considering giving the case to my brother as a present, and going back to my Corsair case. The only problem is, he'll complain about the lack of a blue ray/DVD as well. So I might end up giving it to my parents....

OK, I have a solution. There is enough space around the back (for cable management) that I can just stash the drive in there. It fits nicely under the bay for one of the SSD's.

I'm going to have to 3D print some spacers to make it not move around if the case is moved, but it looks like I wont have to dremel like I was thinking about.

For the DG 9 case... cut some holes in here! You could easily fit 3 5.25 inc drives sideways in here.

If you want to be super conservative, you could just fit in the top two, and leave more space for running cables at the bottom.

But man, you know the case is big when you can just drop a 5.25 inch drive into it when it's not designed for it...

Id like to see you squeeze 45 watts, or more, outta your mobo fan controller, lol.   Even my case came with a fan controller built into it on the back but it cant come anywhere close to that type of power.

Internal optical drives are soon becoming old school. I recently replaced mine with an external blu-ray player on USB 3.0. That also means less wires to worry about.

Each to their own I suppose, but having the option is good. I mean, you don't have to use a bay if it's there.

I see your point but an external Blu-Ray player only needs to be connected when you need it . It has one wire to worry about since a USB 3.0 connection has enough power to run it and connect to the PC. (assuming you have a motherboard with USB 3.0 connectors)

EVGA you made a really bad decision to not include 5.25" drive bays.
This will be a show stopper for a lot for a lot of builders.

Nope. No obsolete 5.25" bays? Thank you!
I don't see this as a show stopper, it's actually becoming the trend lately and is long over due, IMO. More and more water cooling of some sort, AIO or custom, is being used in builds these days and with the exception of business PCs there's really no need for the bays any longer.

It's a huge case, they could of went with a modular design to give customers the option to add 5.25 bay if they wanted. You claim no reason for 5.25 bay any longer?  Lots of people still like using internal optical drive, some like adding 5.25 fan controller. Having the optical drive inside the case is the best place to protect it. External one you need to find some place to sit i,t that doesn't get in the way or knocked over.

I would have no problems paying $20-40 extra, if it gave me the option to add 5.25 bay to any case i buy.

Last post from me. Having got this case for free, I think I have a pretty honest opinion of it.

Good

  • Very well made, good quality everything. Everything feels very solid, even the plastic parts.
  • Good cable management.
  • Very good hinges and door design.
  • Looks nice.

Neutral
  • It's huge. Not sure that the "fins" need to be the way they are, making the thing a bit bulkier than it needs to be.

Bad
  • No 5.25 inch bay.

Would I buy one with my own money? No, because it doesn't have a 5.25 inch bay.

It's a very good case though. For those people who don't think they need a 5.25 inch bay, it seems like a good choice.
