So my pc has been perfectly stable.  Then I installed the new version of precision X1 today...  It said I needed to update the firmware on my 3080 ftw3, so I started closing background programs to get ready for the firmware update, when poof - blue screen of death (before I could even tell it to proceed with the firmware update).  Computer restarts, another blue screen before I can even go into the bios to tell it to start in safe mode.  Computer restarts, then just a black screen (nothing output to my monitor).  I can tell it’s not booting into windows because It immediately turns off upon pressing the power button (rather than having to hold it in).  The fans and LED lighting are on, but nothing outputs to the display.  Nothing I do now appears to achieve any other result.

Not sure what to do.  I need this computer for work, like today.

Edit: forgot to mention that yesterday I installed the hybrid kit for this card, so it’s possible that had something to do with it, but it’s been running fine - played games and used it for work without any trouble after the install was done.

X1 is the worst software ever made by a hardware manufacturer since Dragon Center from MSI.

I am inclined to agree.  A previous version bricked my original 3080 (EVGA tech support’s diagnosis, not mine), forcing me to RMA it.  The replacement card was working great with zero issues until now.

Were you monitoring your memory temperatures as well? You're sure everything was okay and fine? Were you properly grounded when you installed the heatsink on the card? Hopefully you didn't cause a static shock and short circuit something on the PCB.

Yes I always monitor temps on everything.  I was definitely properly grounded during install.  There were zero static shocks.

So yeah, Precision X1 strikes again apparently.  According to tech support, PX1 fried this card as well, but this time it’s much worse than last time since now I can’t do anything on my computer.  I might lose clients as a result this time.

WOW so glad I use MSI Afterburner instead of X1. I only installed it to change the lights to white then deleted it.

Yes they did, and to top it off, they are now refusing to honor the 5 year extended warranty I bought for it like two months ago...

what version are you talking about, 1.1.3, or the one after, 1.1.3.1?

if there was a critical failure like a bluescreen when updating firmware, I could see that causing problems, like with a power outage during a bios flash.

I tried to install the new version and it would not even execute. I had to go back to .1.2.0

Can you please explain better what you mean?  Your statement is quite vague and leaves a lot up to interpretation.

I just got the 3080 FTW, so am I safe to use Precision X1 or not? Don't wanna go through RMA, I just got the card. :D
For overclocking and monitoring i'd rather go with Afterburner, used it for years, don't wanna change it. But I'd like to play with the RGB colors, shame there is no separate app for that feauture.

I don't keep up with integrated gpu but from memory which is not recent most have integrated so if it was a gpu and it will cost you customers then just run w/out gpu and guess what 99% of what you would use for work doesn't require a gpu to run those programs....this whole story just seems fishy and over the top.

The issue is its written in C# thats why its slow compared to afterburner since everything is recompiled on the fly for each function.
Being C# makes it really easy to explore the code tho but you wont like what you see.

Such as heres the bit of code run during the flash.
Its checking if a normal write fails before returning a fail flag and giving up.
No retrys or anything so if it fails part way though good bye.

They really need to just ditch what they have and start again in C++ if they want it to be competitive with the alternatives.

People refused to believe I was having major issues with my 3090 when I installed Precision X in October.. and then most of my issues disappeared after removing it.
